Happy Birthday Sonic.

Here's to another year where you can say that you've (barley) lived longer than Bubsy !

Cheers!

Its also Shadow's, Rouge's and Eggman's birthdays today.

It would be awesome if Sega changed all the Sonic sites to read Eggman Empire one of these birthdays.

Hooray and Happy Birthday to Sonic.

17 years and he's still running.... (strong?).

I'm gonna play my favorite Sonic game today to celebrate. I recommend everyone else do the same. AND DO IT 17 TIMES!!!

Happy 17th Sonic. Hhhaha play it 17 times. Well if I wasn't taking a class I would, but here's what I am doing...once I finish this class[next week] i'm going to play through all the Sonic games I own...in order. Should be fun. And hopefully will take a good while.

I think people acknowledged it, maybe watched a video about it or checked out Sonic Channel, and then went about their business. Maybe in 3 years it will be a big deal again when he hits the big 2-0. By then Nintendo will have Wii Boots so we can all play the Sonic games how they were meant to be played all along.

Whoa - Wearing Wii boots and actually "running" to control Sonic's motion.

Did you come up with that brilliant idea?

Basically, I figure by then Nintendo will have a peripheral for literally everything that isn't necessary. For example, you can get the same effect from a paper plate as you can from the Wii Wheel.

Or they will have a universal plug for what Psxphile brought up.

I'm just sayin'

You can't forget the Wii belt. It's a functional tummy analyzer, and a fashion statement.

o.o, I didn't think that Sonic 1 was region locked at all (unless it's cart is of a different shape from the usian machine).

I think it was the console that did the locking out in that case?

Yeah, physical lock-out. The Japanese carts are designed differently, though by using a Game Genie as a pass through cart, it'll play on a Genesis. If I had known that, I would've bought import Megadrive games a long time ago... ¬__¬ Also a Nomad's cartridge port can accommodate a Japanese cart.

Actually I was talking about the territorial lock-out chip that were in the Model 2 Genesisisisissis (Genesi?). The one that brought up that "Produced or Licensed By Sega of America" screen.

That's not a regional lock-out, but a license check. I discovered Wikipedia. Go me. Anyhow, quoting the Genesis/Megadrive wiki:

There are 2 KB (KiB) of Boot ROM, which is also known as the "Trademark Security System" (TMSS). When the console is started, it checks the game for certain code given to licensed developers. Unlicensed games without the code are thus locked out, but if a game is properly licensed, the ROM will display "Produced by or under license from Sega Enterprises Ltd."

Awesome part is the Genesis Game Genie was officially licensed by SoA, thusly a legal pass-through device. XD

I thought there was a regional lockout too, but it seems like it was only PAL/NTSC broadcast standards and physical lockouts. Random European Megadrive carts (I've seen pictures of Japanese and American design carts for EU games) can fit in a Genesis, but they won't boot, since they're PAL. A friend of mine found European Sonic 2 and it won't run on his machine, despite the game having the physical design of a Genesis game. XD
