Your thoughts on knuckles?
Yes, he is. Quite possibly my second favorite Sonic character, he turns Sonic 3 & Knuckles into an entirely new game, thanks to his different playstyle. His more reserved, responsible attitude make him a nice counterpart to Sonic with his carefree outlook.
how about we start on why you think knuckles is so awesome?
do you like his personality, his character design or his levels in the games that he appears in? or is it something else?
I like his design,moves,story,personality and most of his levels except treasure hunting is meh.
Well, I do like Knuckles. He is a bit quick to anger (bit like me).
I like his design. I saw it and something clicked and my mind thought he is a cool character.
I like most of his storyline. Last of an ancient race of Echidnas, Forever the guardian of the Master Emerald and Angel Island, possible love interest with Rouge. I like that.
What I dont like is the lack of reasons for the things he does.
Adventure 1, 2 are pretty well explained why he leaves the island.
Advance 1 - no storyline so it doesnt matter as much.
Advance 2 He is driving the one hit death @#%$-slap machine because Eggman told him to. You would have thought after Sonic 3 and Knuckles (first contact with civilisation) and Sonic Adventure (Desperate for Master Emerald Shards) he wouldnt really trust Eggman ever again really but there you go.
Heroes hes just along with Tails for some reason and they meet Sonic. Wouldnt it be better if Sonic and Tails meet Knuckles on Angel Island and ask him if he could join them on another adventure(tm) and he says okay then. thats all i need an "Okay Then".
Battle, god knows why he isnt on Angel Island or he could be but its not floating in the sky but he wants to help Emerl become a better fighter...Why? I think it was because he wanted to have a better opponent or some other DBZ style reason.
Advance 3, Knuckles wants to regather the Master Emerald (again) while the world is in pieces thanks to the plot hole that is Chaos Control. Understandable and (if Chaos Angel is actually Angel Island) Angel Island is under Eggman's control. But he never says that so again we dont know.
Shadow The Hedgehog, Well I assume Black Doom has taken over Angel Island and they want the Master Emerald or he has seen the alien invaders and wants to help with ass kicking. Thats understandable i suppose.
Sonic Riders, Dont know nothing about storyline other than Babylon wants to challenge Sonic and Co to hover board races.
I do like his voice actors from Adventure 1 and 2. Micheal McGarhan and Scott Dreier were good at least it wasnt Jamacian accent like the powers that be wanted originally. Shuffle doesnt count they asked Ryan Drummond to do a gruff voice for Knuckles for some reason. But we now have his Sonic X voice actor now and hes alright i suppose.
Like Tails he hasnt fitted in the whole 3D thing really. Tresure Hunting in Adventure 1 was okay but frustrating and in Adventure 2 it was boring. Rouge actually had better levels really because they all at least had a gimmick (Dry Lagoon - transporting turtles, Security Hall - safe opening, Egg Quarters - Bit of Stealth, Mad Space - Hints were backwards). In the Mega Drive days he had brute strength to go through hidden routes but because of the linear nature of the new games that hasnt happened so they designed stages for him. Maybe a change in direction is needed. Maybe (in a Knuckles the Echidna game its possible) you are able to explore the whole of Angel Island and you find out Knuckles's past (hopefully in a non-archie more echidnas than hedghehogs way) and why he is the last echidna.
i agree taylor. They need to give a better reason for him in games. Give him old style levels but using his abilites to find short cuts.

All that aside, hpwever, I really don't like how Knuckles' voice is portrayed in... well, anything, really. I don't like his deep "grandpa" voice in the Sonic Adventure games,
and I REALLY don't like him sounding like Yu-Gi-Oh in Sonic X.
He should have an Australian Accent because he's an Echidna, which is a Monotreme, whoch are only found in Australia.
And If Knuckles ever has Rap music in his stages again, I'm going on a shooting Spree at Sega of America's headquarters.
I love badasses. And up until Shadow showed up with that cute butt of his, Knuckles was the biggest badass around.

Hmmm...Knux isn't as cool as he once was, but he's still cool enough to be one of my favorites. He can dig, climb, glide and perform an ancient martial art. <_< Thats gotta get him some points. Although his life mission is pretty unfair, all alone and stuff. Yet in recent Sonic games seems his guardian job can be postponed to go on cross world adventures with his pal, Sonic. <_< All in all he's agreat character who needs to be developed a little more.

Agree, his music should be more tribal really, percussion instraments and twangy guitars (think final bit in Cannons Core). maybe.

as for knuckles, he has always been one of my fave characters. the mixture of his contentedness with his rather lonely lifestyle, his design and his loveable gullability is just appealing. ^^
Is it true they were gonna give knux a jamaican voice?
I remember reading that in the SAdv 2 stratergy guide, but I'm not sure about the legitimacy of it...especially considering no talking takes place in the early games, unless it's referring to pre-production SA.
Yes, Knuckles was going to have a Jamaican culture or something like that going on. Just listen to the Knucklemania song.

I think the SA1/2 voice suits him fine, even if he does sound a little dull at times. He is abysmal in Sonic X (naturally) and it's going to be horrible hearing him in the games from now on. I liked his voice in the original Sonic anime, though I'm unsure if it'd suit him nowadays. I like him sounding deeper than Sonic.

They'd need an actual Australian VA, then. Have you ever heard american actors attempting an Aussie accent? It's disgusting. And come to think of it, a genuine accent would just be a bit boring (I'm a New Zealander, we sound fairly similar - moderately dull. Come on, Australia-based forum-goers, it's true, you know it...).
Knuckles with [American-]Aussie accent: "Gee day, Soneek! Th' Maasta Eemuruld's blinkin' gon meesing agen! 'Elp me get eet back and we'll throw some shreemp on tha baahby* aaftawads! Mate!"
As for music - I'm sorry to say I do like the rap, but some music along the lines of Mystic Ruins would be wonderful for Knuckles, especially if the game's story sees him visiting tribal related areas or exploring his past. And the likes of Tikal's theme.. nice.
His little theme tune in S3&K was cool too, I'd love to hear that redone and mixed into one of his music tracks.

Contentedness.. yeah, the fact he's not another angst bomb is highly beneficial. He and Shadow would be too similar if he was angsty, considering the fact they both kinda have a mysterious past.

Disclaimer: I'm not dissing Australia/ns at all. I loved my trip to Aussie a couple of years ago (besides the flesh-searing heat. I HATE heat) and in fact my family and I are planning on moving there to live

I tend to feel the same way toward most rock, but I don't complain about it.
I personally am getting annoyed at the general idea that rap music = bad, as Red said, that can apply to rock just as easily. Now I love rock music, classic 70s/80s style rock mainly, but that doesn't mean that I think it should be everywhere, nor do I think rap should stay away from games. Still, I'd like to see some classic styled Sonic music return, Sonic CD or NiGHTS quality and style, a game with it's own style of music that mixes various styles together is much better than just putting different styles in all over the place (though SA2 did do it to add personality to the characters' levels).
Anyway, I adore Knuckles, he was my favourite character when I was younger, mainly due to his Sonic the Comic character (which I still favour a lot). I've always liked his loner ancient warrior concept, if he had adventures in the games like he did in StC, I'd be so much happier ^^.
I didn't like him until I played a 3D Sonic game because in all the 2D games he looks pink.

As far as music goes, I figure some of the tracks off S3&K suit him perfectly...possibly the best being Sandopolis zone act 2, the one with the seriously heavy bassline.
Rap I've always hated, sorry to all those out there who like it, but imo it's annoying and a pain, and I hate it. I'm so glad they don't use rap for Knux now.

Nothing against Jamacans, but that just wouldn't work for the character!
I still say Knux is quite simply the greatest character in Sonic. Sonic tries to be cool, and tries too hard so fails miserably. Tails is cute and funny. Robotnik is good. Amy, Big and Cream...well, let's not go there.
But Knux is out in a leage of his own. He doesn't try to be cool, he just is, and that makes him all the more cool because of it! A hard man, but with unshakable loyalty to his friends and extreme courage and bravery.
And of course, awesome strength

Based on the "normal" definition for friends, the only version of Knuckles that is loyal to his friends is in Archie. It's also the only version of Knuckles that really has friends though I think you could make an argument for the STC/Fleetway version in terms of friends. Knuckles doesn't really have any friends in the games or Sonic X. He has acquaintances or "friendly" allies, but not friends.

This is sadly accurate, but I'm a big Knux fan in spite of that. He's a cool 'tough guy' type character, with just enough flaw to his personality to give him style.
And if you ask me, the rap seemed to fit him better than Tails's preppy pop music or Sonic's rock. Each character had his or her won style of music to fit their personality, and I agree with each. I especially love Amy and Shadow's themes. 'Throw it All Away' is just so cool, but I'm a Linkin Park/Evanescence fan, so I like angsty rock. >>;; Dun ask.
I loved Knuckles' treasure hunting in Sonic Adventure and wish there were more.. It's really nice to go around exploring levels and such, especially digging and climbing around. ^^ In Sonic 3 & Knuckles it was a whole new adventure playing as him; the new paths were just great! =D Knuckles' problem is that if the M.E. isn't involved he pretty much hasn't got a reason to join in, which limits his character a little... on the other hand they don't seem to care at all in recent games 😛
First off, I'd like to say I like Sonic best and never really liked Knuckles, but he's grown on me in the past few years (thanks to my brother, the Knuckles(his fave) to my Sonic (my fave) (hey, we're fraternal twins, so we go at it from time to time, but we're still buds, just like S&K)), and now makes my top five character list.
I think Knuckles is just being a bit broader about what he defines as a 'threat' to the M.E. Seems like he's no longer going to sit back and let Eggman or some psychotic extraterrestrials take over the world and THEN wait until they have armies strong enough to take the M.E. and then blow up Angel Island, no, he'll give them a Knuckles fist to the face WAY before that happens. He's always envied Sonic's free life, and maybe is adopting some of it to a certain extent.
Plus, I think a Knuckles game would ROCK. I mean, have you seen how widespread Echidna ruins are? From Angel Island, to the Mystic Ruins, to Regal Ruin, to Carnival Island (somewhat 'updated' by Eggman, I'll admit), to the desert levels in Sonic Adventure 2. Imagine all the revelations Knux could find about his people in each of these far-flung locales! Indiana Knuckles! YEAH!!
