I was thinking as i made my post over in the favorite songs topic, what if SEGA used licensed music. Im not supporting nor saying they should use licensed music, but what songs would best work for the chracters?
Sonic: Maybe some roth era van halen, like Jump or Panama, becuase they all have a very fun and exciting feel to them.
Shadow: "You know You're Right" by Nirvana. The whole song is kinda in sync with his theme. Like the main line ("pain" (sung very long and drawn out) for those who have never heard it)
Tails:Maybe Dreams by Van Halen, as Tails (IMHO) seems to dream of growing up and being like Sonic and doing great things
Dr.Eggman:Well,i cant think of one...
Knuckles: In My Hands by Fuel. (Just popped in my head, and i can't figure out why.)
E-123 Omega: Omegaman by the police 🙂
Well their is the base for me. What do you think? Doesnt have to be the chracters ive mentioned. I wanted to give out a police song or two, but couldnt think of who to give them to...
I love your idea for Tails...Dreams kicks major!
Shadow...something like Rage Against the Machine...I'm thinking "Wake Up" (the song that plays at the beginning of the credits for THE MATRIX). The song has so much rage and angst in it!
Sonic...The first thing that came to my mind was Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now"
Rouge...Either Sweet's "Fox on the Run" (the band that did The Ballroom Blitz) or David Bowie's "Rebel, Rebel"
Knuckles...Led Zeppelin's "Ramble On"
Dr Robotnik/Eggman...this is an obvious choice...The Beatles "I am the Walrus" (either the original or the cover done by Styx)
That's all I can think of now...
IMO, SEGA's current Sonic music fits very well, I'd rather see more Crush 40 and Julien-K than liscensed music. Two reasons. first, I am the worlds biggest Crush 40 fanboy. Secondly, it's made for the games so it fits the games better. Besides, if Sonic music isn't..well...Sonic music, then that'd be one less good thing Sonic games are known for. I mean, the music is one of the best parts of the games...I say, keep it like it is.
Humans Being (From Twister) popped into my head for shadow as well. Oh and if you cant tell im slightly biased towards Van Halen. 😉
As of yet, all of Sega's Sonic music has been OST, the nearest we can come to licensed music would be the songs which are clearly a reference, Starlight Zone was based on a song by the band who performed the single of Sonic 2's ending theme (of which I believe was inspired by the game, opposed to Starlight being inspired by their song), of course Crush 40 has released 2 SA tracks on it's debut album, but both were made for the games in question.
Also, people. JAPANESE GAMES!
Believe it or not, but Japan isn't full of Van Halen fans.
Why are people discussing whether the games should use licensed music when the first post says "Im not supporting nor saying they should use licensed music"? As far as I can tell, it's just a what-if thing.
Yeah I'm wondering that veered right off course there.
Anyways...
Sonic: Faster - Manic Street Preachers.
Tails: Banquet - Bloc Party.
Knuckles: Hysteria - Muse.
Shadow: Stockholm Syndrome - Muse.
Rouge: Girls - Prodigy.
Amy: Dare - Gorillaz.
Cream: Mr Brightside - The Killers.
Eggman: Spitfire - Prodigy.
Omega: Firestarter - Prodigy.
Lord Eggman Nega: Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz.
Blaze: Faster (Chemical Brothers Remix) - Manic Street Preachers.
Big: Universally Thinking - Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Chaotix: Andy You're a star - The Killers.

Yeah...but I thought Jun Senoue is a huge Van Halem fan...I can't verify this...his site is down for maintenance
I have nothing against the OST music used in the games! Crush 40 is actually one of my favorite bands! I assumed this was just a discussion of "what if Sega used licensed music"...I think it would cost too much, personally...
I would love if they put licensed music in the Sonic games. I know a good song for Sonic's theme: "I Don't Know" by Lost Prophets. They could also maybe use some Linkin' Park music for Shadow, it would match him.
The best theme song I can think of for a character would have to be Metallica's "Motorbreath" for Sonic.
And possibly "Damage Inc." for Shadow, no?
Sonic ~ Follow Me by Breaking Benjamin
Metal Sonic ~ Crashing Around You by Machine Head
Shadow ~ Who I Am by Smile Empty Soul
Rouge ~ Try Again by Aaliyah
Shadow's song would have to be "I Did What I Did for Maria" by Tony Christie ">

*ducks & covers*
Sonic: "Supersonic" by Bad Religion
Knuckles: "I Come from a Land Down Under" by Men at Work or the cover by Pennywise.
Imagines Knux with an Austrailian accent...
"Crikey, the emerald just broke!"
All I know is that Crush 40, indeed new era Sonic music in general, makes me laugh without fail at how cheesy and even lame it is at times. Some songs sound like they belong in a Mentos commercial. I mean this even goes back to when me and my best friend pop in Sonic Adventure for the first time on 9-9-99 only to snicker at such hits as "Herr I come..ruffer din da ressa dim, da bessa dim, tuffa dan levvah..." or "HEY BIG GUY! hey little guy, can you tell me hooo came first...". Heck even "Sonic Boom" from SonicCD had to grow on me...but it's still pretty lame as far as songs go.
Enter Licensed music. There is a lot of great stuff out there not getting and notice. EA has done a great service by exposing bands that might otherwise not have hit it so big otherwise by putting them in the game (even though I hate most of the stuff they put on there...but that's different).
Stick some Killers in there! Muse! Heck I'm sure Nightwish has a song that would match Shadow or whatever Omega/Gamma/?? robot the come up with next.
Eggman's song from SA2 was putrid; give that man something Industrial, not pop-rock!
I've deleted more paragraphs out of this post than I care to admit, so I'll stop now...
I on the other hand Crush 40...but then again, Jun Senoue and I both share a love for 80's bands like Van Halen...
Now, if you're talking about Knuckle's theme music...I'd totally agree with you...

While Jun Senoue was involved in the production of the latter, Crush 40 as a band didn't do those two tracks.
I thought of this when I took out the soundtrack to Transformers:the Movie. Some of these songs go very well with Sonic. I'll post lyrics because you've probably never heard of Stan Bush's two songs from the film: The Touch and Dare. First Super Sonic; The Touch fits him aptly for two reasons. 1.Its from an important moment in the film, where Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime, like when Sonic becomes Super Sonic, 2. the lyrics spek for them selves:
You got the touch
You got the power
After all is said and done
You've never walked, you've never run,
You're a winner
You got the moves, you know the streets
Break the rules, take the heat
You're nobody's fool
You're at your best when when the goin' gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You never bend, you never break
You seem to know just what it takes
You're a fighter
It's in the blood, it's in the will
It's in the mighty hands of steel
When you're standin' your ground
And you never get hit when your back's to the wall
Gonna fight to the end and you're takin' it all
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You're fightin' fire with fire
You know you got the touch
You're at your best when when the road gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
You got the touch
You got the power
Next Dare seems almost like it was made for the character:
Sometimes when your hopes have all been shattered
And there's nowhere to turn
You wonder how you keep going
Think of all the things that really mattered
And the chances you've earned
The fire in your heart is growing
You can fly, if you try leaving the past behind
Heaven only knows what you might find
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
It's time to take a stand
And you can win, if you dare
Everybody's trying to break your spirit
Keeping you down
Seems like it's been forever
But there's another voice if you'll just hear it
Saying it's the last round
Looks like it's now or never
Out of the darkness you stumble into the light
Fighting for the things you know are right
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
The power is there at your command
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
It's time to take a stand
And you can win, if you dare
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
The power is there at your command
Dare - dare to keep all your love alive
Dare to be all you can be
Dare - 'cause there is a place where dreams survive
And it's calling you on to victory
Couldn't find any clips though. There yah have it.

Jun Senoue was only born in Japan. He grew up (ironicaly enough) in Panama.

Kinda thought that was a funny coincidence too. Love to know the story to that song. Other than it's a car song, I have no clue.
EDIT: Yep not best word. (refer to below post.)
"IRONIC!"
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Looks like someone has a PhD from the Alanis Morisette school of Irony... >_>
TransFan92: now you mention it, they *do* sound pretty good for Sonic. Though Dare might be a good one for Tails, given his character development. Plus I always thought the Sonic soundtracks had a certain 80s feel to them from time to time (probably why I like them).
As for not knowing the tracks in question, personally I cherish my copy of the CD soundtrack - it rocks In fact, the movie pretty much rocks (and this from a non-Transformers fan)
