The clues were actually meant to point to Mecha Sonic when Sonic/Tails/both face him:

lol Actually, Silver Sonic zips along the floor too, just like Mecha Sonic, except not in a crouching position - that's why I thought it was the Knuckles version of the fight.

And although the SSZ boss zips along the floor like Silver Sonic, he also zips BACKWARDS as well as forwards, plus he has the trick where he stops spinning in mid-air, drops to the floor and then dashes at you. Let's also not forget his bouncing spin. As I recall Silver Sonic doesn't have those attacks.

Heh, I must've made that too easy.
1) The cutscene prior to the Egg Beetle fight includes a moment where Robotnik triumphantly declares, "Behold, my new power! Egg Beetle, go!" (the same cutscene also has Robotnik absurdly ask Sonic, the fastest thing alive, "How'd you get here so quickly?" and for that I have to question the whole IQ of 300...)
2) Sonic and Robotnik are battling in a tall tree somewhere in Mazuri. The tree is as big as it needs to be for the player to finish the fight, which could generate improbably large flora depending upon the length of the fight.
3) The Egg Beetle's signature attack is clamping down on Sonic with its enormous pinchers.

1. This one referred to the second elevator in the lobby of the Station Square hotel. It's used to access this fight and never opened again.
2. Meh, this was kind of a stupid clue. Chaos leaves himself open to attack after doing a kind of head-thrust move.
3. I was thinking of when the emeralds float around in the air after you hit Chaos, but Lighty's clue is better.

Never played it, but if I recall correctly the gameplay videos I saw he created a bunch of fake Shadows for you to fight against. Not to mention he is a Shadow lookalike as well.
