According to an article in this months Game Informer, Sonic Fan Remix developers Mercury and Pelikan are not only almost done, but are deciding on what to do next. Mercury, the SFR programmer, said that his next project will be an original Sonic game that doesn't copy levels from previous titles, but Pelikan, the artist that made SFR famous will not be a part of the project. Instead, he may be doing a remake of Streets of Rage.
It's unlikely that the two will be pairing up again, as they seem to have differing goals: for Mercury, programming is just a hobby and he has no intentions of breaking into the business. For Pelikan, his dream is to create his own games.
So...this is a fan game? o.o

Yeah, this thing came up online some time late last year.
Haven't played it yet, but it's surprising that a fan game gets mentioned in official press media.
Ahhh ok. Yea I had seen that once before. Didn't pay much attention to it at the time, I suppose. It'll be interesting to see what original levels they come up with.
Fan games sure have imporved since the old days!
It was bound to happen eventually.
