No, that's not strong enough.

HOLY ****.

They found a playable beta of Sonic Xtreme... that actually resembles the screenshots everybody saw. That's right. FISH-LENS.

And the best part, they're letting everyone download it (via BitTorrent). Now, I'm full aware that we can't post links to that kind of illegal stuff here, so I won't. But it shouldn't take you too long to find it.

Screenshots, as evidence (from Sonic Cult, which I'm only not linking to because they DO supply the torrent link):

Damn. Just daaamn...

This is the first time something I read on the internet has made my jaw drop since I heard they were making The Boondocks into a TV Show. On a side note, I said "GET THE @#%$ OUT" Real loud and my family looked at me weird.

I would have liked to try this if there was actually any seeders for the torrent.

EDIT: Hold up, what is exactly required to play this beta?

On the sws2b site, they mention modified saturn system that can play a cdr, ie gets around copy protection. But i don't know why an emulator can't be used, even though you need a decent saturn emulator, bios files and a pretty good computer.

edit: elsewhere people that "have downloaded it" say it will work on an emulator. Hmm @ date closeness to the 1st (waits and sees)

Let me bring you the whole story, from the beginning. I have faked the binary using a nice script I made, then packed it to a 7zip archive, along with a fake cue sheet that ressembled a legit, Saturn one. I put the torrent on <torrent website name> and posted a link on the forums. It spreaded around. It hit <website name> quickly. Some of its users, who aren't <bad word> hoarders at all, almost <bad word> their pants when they saw their vomit 600kb demo decrease in value. Some argue that this was the reason for sending me fake email, threatening to sue me and <bad word> like that.

The story I told on IRC behind this so far was that I traded a Silpheed Prototype for this build. But some people were sceptical, as I've provided no pics and the torrent was slow, so Saz and Borisz took some screenshots of a VOB video the awesome X-Treme developer, Chris Senn gave us, and posted them. After some time, it's been posted everywhere, Wikipedia, Digg, you name it.

In the mid time, we've had it all - people taking credit for the leak, people saying they gave me the beta, people claiming they have downloaded it. It advanced to people buying Saturns later etc. In other words, we pulled out one of the best April Fools ever (I want to see you prove me wrong), without planning any bit of it at all.

This prank wouldn't have worked without some help. Thanks goes to Saz, Borisz, HXC, Sanik and Chris Senn. I'm going to sleep now, haven't slept since Wednesday.

yeah...lol and all that crap...boo

Alright, so it looks like it was an April Fool's joke... on March 30th. Lame. I'm going to finish downloading just to see what's inside, but it sounds like it isn't what anyone had expected.

The good news, though, is that the screens ARE real - from a video that Chris Senn provided. You can get that at Sonic CulT. Have fun.

*super bump since assembler released a new video for the first level "Sonic X-treme - Cancelled Sega Saturn "nights" concept video"*

The music is just the Europe/Japan Good Future for Quartz Quadrant.

It does look quite cool really. For a demo of an unused version of a 10 year old canned game. They should turn the Sonic Xtreme story into a book.

For the time that looked ok. I remember Sonic's model in Jam and think: "Well dang, Sonic looks pretty cool compared to that".

I still think Xtreme would have been a letdown given the technology at the time. SA1 was a triumphant blaze of glory into the 3d realm. Xtreme may have softened that punch or even removed it from history.

Still, always nice to see what could have been. My hope is that someday someone gets the Metal Sonic/Nack boss fight discs.

I know it's crazy, but I still hope to see Metal Sonic MKIII at some point in the future.

Curse them for making such an awesome enemy and then canning him! T.T

I think he means this creature here whom, aside from the blatant MS symbols, you probably wouldn't believe was Metal Sonic even if someone told you.

He doesn't really resemble Sonic much at all, except for maybe that giant thorn jutting out the back of his head.

He was a lot cooler looking than Metal Overlord. At least he was in my opinion.

Maybe it's that whole "wanting things you can't have" thing.

I like that robot, boss, thing as well Unicorn. Way better than the 15 mins. it takes SEGA now to create a new character. *feels the wanting things you can't have* as well.

Are you jsut calling it that...or was it really supposed to be a new "Mecha Sonic"? I couldn't see it being a new Metal Sonic...was there ever a MKII? Or was that the one in Chaotix?

They could reuse the design for a right hand minion of Metal Sonic if he ever continues to defy the ol' doctor.

Edit: This is what they meant by MKII

They are all MS boss forms in the game. It goes from MKI to MKV.

You don't want to see MKI. He's just silly =P

Or MKV for that matter. How could progressive evolution turn him into that?

Ahh ok I see now. Sweet. Man too bad this guy was never finished. Even if it did suck, it could've cushioned the blow for Heroes..then agani Heroes may have never been created, or SA...or SA2. Ahhh! =P

I've probally said this before, but it makes you wonder what would happen if Sonic Xtreme was made. Nack/Fang would have just as many or perhaps even more games than Amy and probally would have featured in Sonic Adventure or even its sequel, opening the door for more games featuring him in the future.

It's sad that Fang/Nack probably won't show up again, since Shadow's the resident gun user.

But, going by the stories they offer on that site, Mobius would then be canon... which would make life as an over-obsessed fanboy that nitpicks plot details quite annoying if Sega had still gone ahead and set SA1 onward on Earth.

Also apparently the Assembler beta is being released on the 18th or somesuch. Just in case people cared.

Hate to double post and raise a really old topic from the dead, but seems IGN has been digging through the basement lately.
