I've almost beaten the neutral-hero path of the story, myself. The game isn't bad, per se...seems it'll have good replay value with like 16 different endings, but the gameplay itself is rather short...It only took me an hour to get as far as I have.
ARG
It's WORSE than Heroes in terms of dying. I've died countless times.
....
"DAMNIT!"
I checked Lothar Hex's LJ (he writes reviews for Gamespot and is very unbias) and he ripped the game to pieces, apparently the additions (guns/veichles) work well but add nothing to the formula, the game is unforgivingly short and every stage for a "dark/hero" point requires a Team Chaotix styled mission, and if you want to do the dark dark ending you need to light the lanterns in the halloween castle.
2 more days until I can test this for myself. But if the difference between endings is Team Chaotix action, and when you chose which side to fight with and they BOTH attack you, it'll end up not working well with me.
*le sigh*
Can someone tell me how many different combinations or paths there are to complete it? There seem to be different "path names" o.O
I'm currently playing it. It DOES offer alot of replay value by letting decide how to branch the levels. Good, bad or nuetrel. Vehicle use ranges from cool. (Flying Aliens) to Pointless (Jeeps)
E10+ my fat @#$!!! For once that Jack Thompson jerk may be right about one thing the ESRB isn't properly rating some of the games. This is a T easy. He can use hand guns and machine guns. He can drive while shooting!!
The only thing that helps deter you from acting evil is that it's much harder to finish a level evil, than good with nuetrel being the easiest as you just shoot through the whole level to the end spot (like you would normally do on Sonic Heroes.
BTW Sonic Rush completly OWNS this game, and is my top five of best Sonic games. Love the JGR style music too.
Sorry for the double post.
P.S. There is also an excessive use of the word "damn". Used by Shadow heavily, and is even used by the heroes. Ratchet and Clank is rated T, and all it has is crazy weapons being shot at robots.
Racthet is much more kid freindly than Shadow IMO.
Game Spy has review
ps2.gamespy.com/playstati...704p1.html
It seems the only problem he had was the camera, good vs evil concept not being explore, the control being too sensitive and guns. Otherwise he likes game.

Which obviously explains the 2/5, right?

Well according to their game rating system, 2 is fair. He does complement the graphics and cut scenes so there are stuff he did like .
Speaking of Lothar, is this what you were talking about, Craig? Because it sure seems like he hates it (or, well, now he just thinks it's average)...
SPOILERS Bought the game yesterday, and already discovered 2 endings for myself, one which...well, let's just say that characters die. Like poor ol' Eggy. I was going "OMG" whenever the moment of his death was approaching, and just that last second, boom. This was the ending where Shadow finds out to be a Shadow Android and accepts it, with Omega preparing to pump Eggman full of lead and then Shadow giving the final blow, an overhead chop to the head which cuts to black, ending the game. Note that he says, "I'm going to send you straight to Hell." and Eggman yells "Noooooooooooooo!!!!! when the screen goes pitch black. Enough proof to think that Eggman has lived his last seconds.
Yeah, he gave it a 5/10 on his second comment. I trust him, I've been following his reviews for a while and when he nailed Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Ultimate Spider-Man (only ONE of these games is good. Can you guess which?) I creditted him as a fair reviewer with no brand loyalty who doesn't sugar coat things.
Sugar coating is bad. It makes people believe Squenix can write plots, when clearly they cannot.
*looks at spoiler*
OMG!!!
I'm not getting it until Xmas...

If it's not Ultimate Destruction.....
It was. I thought that was too obvious to mention o.o
Aww, it's out tommoz and Play havent posted my version yet...
They've posted the PS2 versions, but not the X Box or GC versions, means I wont get it on friday....
Hopefully Saturday.... If not.....
NOT MONDAY, I CANT WAIT THAT LONG
Not using spoiler tags will lead to warnings.
Bwahaha @ Swifty. My PS2 version was mailed on Wednesday afternoon and my Rush this morning. Both should be here Saturday at the latest 😀
Weird. I put tags in my post, but I had to go back and edit and must've forgot to add the tags a 2nd time. Sorry about that (and Dr. L, I know you know that I know about the spoilers, thanks).
Anyways, about the game, I like it. That's about it. It's the same feeling I have for the game like SH.

There was only ever one company who could write plots, and they died.
(Sheds a tear for Black Isle)
Yet the fans do... according to the reader average. This deeply scares me. {:[
Now that I know the ending there's absolutely no reason for me to ever play this abortion of a game. YAY!
I'd give it a 6.5. The worst of the "Adventure" series. (SH being my favorite.) The problem lies in having to choose good or bad. Neutrel will speed you to the level where you just get straight to the giant ring. Choosing good or bad will force you to explore and backtack. Slowing the pace of the game severly. The branching levels by chossing different paths is cool, but that's the only thing new that is.
If the story had more focus I might have liked what I've played more. (And if the stupid Chaotix-type missions were so god-damned ridiculous.)
The spoiler tages hate me so!
Spoilers (Select To Read): Meh. I got an ending where he's just like "LOLZ, I'M SHADOW, DR. GERALD AND BLACK DOOM MADE ME LOLZ. I PROTECT THE ARK, NOW GET UT, EGGMAN!!11"
Yeah, don't like that one... perhaps the SUPER-evil ending will be better. 😀

T__T;
This game is just out right terrible. Check IGN's review and that will tell all. I mean I am a big Sonic fan, I don't post much but I am on this site like everyday. I love Sonic I really do, my avitar on Mario Kart DS is a home made picture of Sonics feet and legs. Just saying I really love Sonic befor I bash the crap out of this game.
The graphics are pretty blocky, nothing special at all. Some of the voices, acting, lines are just horrible. I remember reading some complaints about Heroes and its acting. I always thought it was very good especialy after SA and SA2. But good gravy this is very very annoying.
The gameplay is so flawed its not even funny. From the very start your thrown into all of this chaos and confusion, It can be very difficult to find what you are looking for. There can be so much going on and because of the camera you can't get a perfect view. And when you do have a nice look, its not so easy to hit only who you want.
Shooting seems like an after thought... You know I have to stop right here I gotta go.
Oh and one more thing befor I finish later, I don't think anyone here will like the new Spin Dash. Not how it works, just how it looks. If you do please say "I"
I already know the Super Evil ending. But since I can't work out how to do spoilers, I'll just say that it's rather predictable - it's everything that happens when Shadow goes super insane.
Bah! I don't care what everyone else says, I love this game. Yeah, it can be a little confusing at first when you are dropped into a city getting bombarded to hell, but after a little practice, the controls are second-nature. The gun-use feels smooth and natural to me; It's simple to pick them up and swap them, and destroying enemies is as simple as pointing in their general direction and pulling the trigger.
Admittedly, I get a laugh out of watching Shadow carry and use some weapons that are larger than he is. He is one strong hedgie. (He can flip a bus over with his bare hands!)
Chaos Blast is fun. It's satisfying to unleash hell on your enemies with it. Chaos Control, however, has been more annoying than anything. It's pretty much useless in Hero missions, because it send you flying past your objectives! However, I can see it being useful in neutral missions, and it can be a powerful asset in boss battles.
As usual, the greatest enemy of all is the dreaded duo of the camera and the bottemless pits. Oh well. I can get used to it, and I learn how to avoid the pits.
The voice acting? Some of it is alright. Some of it is bad. Tails comes to mind in the "bad" catagory. Black Doom in the "good".
Graphics? Nothing to wet yourself over. The cinematics, though...dammit, I want a movie like that!
The music...ah, I do like the music. It can be quite varried and isn't always energetic action pieces. The GUN Fortress had a somewhat somber sound to it, and the playable flashback Shadow has of the ARK incident feels...wistful, more innocent, like Shadow is wishing he could go back to a kinder and more simple time.
The story? Well, so far it's got me hooked. I've completed 4 of the endings so far, both of the far good and far evil paths. They were kinda predictable, but I'm betting things get more interesting when you aren't a total villian or hero. I'll discuss my opinion of those when I get there.
Oh, and Shadow + samurai sword= supreme coolness
Wow. Did IGN have to refer negatively to the 'Dreamcast days' and SA1 so damn much? SA1 is undoubtedly affected by quite a few things that should have been fixed in DX (the fact they were not is unforgiveable. A 'Director's Cut' is supposed to be the product as it was originally invisioned and intended by the director. I doubt SA1's "director" intended for it to have a half-baked mission mode and more problems than the original in addition to having some cool little details removed. Um, sorry, where were we?..). They could have mentioned the fact SA1 did have a lock-on system that most people found acceptable (Gamma), or that it had the most vibrant, imaginitive and detailed worlds of any Sonic game (personal opinion there, but I feel it's pretty justified).
Anyway, Shadow's story is the only real draw I have to his game now (it was the only reason I played through Heroes, as well). Thank gawd I've managed to avoid any big spoilers. Scheduled for a release on the 25th here. Hope that will actually be true. Not holding my breath though, considering I just got Gems Collection two days ago. Yes, the GameCube version took until November 15 to get to this bloody country (the PS2 version made it here only about 2 weeks earlier). Angst.
Us yanks got all versions on the 16th. What good is story mode when they give Shadow three or more different origins depending on whether he's good or bad or nuetral?
Yea, some voices are horrible (Vector sounds dumb)while others are done better (Charmy has a much less annoying voice than he did in Heroes, I think it's the Sonic X voice actress.).
How come only some of the Sonic X voices are used? Tails, Knuckles, and Vectors voices all sound different.
All of them have changed. the guy who does Sonic's voice just imitated Drummond's when he did it for the show. Which to me, is really stupid. As all the voice either sound the same as in the game, ANYWAY. OR they sound completely different. It so defeats the original point.
(Unless you're talking about the Sonic X voices sounding different, they're still the same, it's Dan Green as Knuckles. Tails sounds exactly the same to me, and I never heard Vector.)
Anyway. Has anyone done the "Destroy Ship" missions. (The President's Escape Pod, The Fleeing Alien Spacecraft?)I can never seem to destroy the ship -_-;.
Everyone who bought this game knowing full well it was going to suck this much - you're part of the problem.
You beat me to it, VCP.
This is worse than the people who buy the new Madden every year despite knowing that it's only a miniscule update, because at least the Madden loyalists get a technically competant game out of the deal unlike the Sonic loyalists who get peed on from a great height.
End the abusive relationship, people. DEMAND excellence from your games and stop settling for 'oh well, at least it isn't as bad as I THOUGHT it was gonna be'. It's like being kicked in the crotch and being happy that they weren't wearing steel-toed boots this time.
Just out of curiosity, and excuse me if it's been answered already, bt is there a JPN language audio option?
It seems to me that there's too different reactions to this game.
The first is, "This isn't perpetually fast! I have to think and backtrack on occasion to complete the game! It sucks!"
The second is, "This isn't perpetually fast! I have to think and backtrack on occasion to complete the game! It's cool!"
The thing is, this ISN'T a Sonic game. The fact that it's a little harder than a "Run to the end of the level" Sonic game is part of the game. The age cert is part of this.
So it isn't exactly the same as Sonic's levels on SA2. Does that actually make it a bad game? Surely having to do a little more than press the jump and run buttons is a good thing?

I've managed to blow up the president's escape pod but not the alien spacecraft. Seems like you have to be relentless in your attacks. Use turrets if you can.
BTW, they did do a few things right.. like recycling certain muscial interludes from cutscenes from SA2. I found that welcome.
Hey, I'm smarter than to buy the game. Heroes left me much more cautious about these games... I'm still contemplating checking out the game from GameStop (you know, for free - and legally, too!), but then again, it may not even be worth that.
Still waiting for a GameSpot review. Taking forever.
And Dirk, ONLY if you import it in December or otherwise get a version that ISN'T on the GameCube. GameCube gets "co-op", though.
It disturbs me that I'm not opposed to the gameplay, but the cutscenes suck to the maximum,
Spoilers (Select To Read): the cheese factor of President Not!Bush, Commander's random ragey rant in the first two levels made me gag... and when exactly did Sonic and Shadow work together for that photo?
The disregard for continuity is pissing me off and I only had a 20 minute play before gooing to see Potter.
Speaking of which, Sega paid to air a 2 minute cinematic trailer to Shadow before the openning night prime time Potter?
...I'm not sure wether to be more impressed by the fact Sega Europe is investing in this (when it ignored all the previous games, except a minor Heroes ad campiegn) or that the audience at the cinema started murmering and making "AWESOME!" comments during/after it.
Yet they had the sense to ignore the 5 people applauding the movie.
Curious.
Ah well *loads up the game*
Yeah, that pic with Shad/Sonic cheeses me off. It's like they're officialy slapping SA2 with a NOT CANON label, which sucks.
What pic?
My Review/Rating for Shadow the Hedgehog.
Grapics: Brillient, Talk timing was perfect, and great looks for Black Doom. 10/10.
Music: Good music for the dark game. 8/10
Gameplay: Controls are easy, the Heroes missions where the 'proper story. Storyline is also a nice change from just eggman.
Other: Was saying damn every time you got hit nessary? Intro was just @*#$ sweet! Based from dark mode. 9/10, I don't like Sonic getting beat up by Shadow though.
We all know Sonic can kick Shadows@$$
Waitwaitwaitwaitwait. We're giving Shadow's graphics a TEN? No, no, THIS is a 10, Shadow's a 6. At best. Looks more like a 5 or 4 to me, really.
I know where you live!
'gets missle out of pocket.'
Here have my missile Craig.
COOL!
'Throws missile up in air'
Look! Its coming back again!
Is that Missile active, Shendu.
All i can say is that Craig a dead man.
'Missile blows up Craig'
That was just about as violent as the Shadow game is.
So let me get this.
HOT DAMN, this sounds awesome!
Ok, it's not all great.
Camera (AGAIN)
4Kids voices, and Vector's actor is bad (NOOOOOO)
Graphics aren't up to industry standard (I don't really give a %$#@)
Level design based on pits (the single biggest flaw in Sonic Team design)
Story plotholes (not a huge issue to me in a Sonic game)
CatorTroy's right. I'd rather have a great game than a better than the slap in the face expected game. But seriously, I'm seeing enough positives here to make me interested. And I'm definitely buying the game and seeing what I think for myself. I can't play this game until Thursday due to a semester project, though.
As for the game being short, that normally annoys me, but with 5 level paths, it probably won't be too bad. Being able to play a quick game can actually be an advantage when the game has such a system so that it's actually not that short. And if there's a bonus story that you unlock by doing every path, even better. That would combine the advantages of short games and long games.

Depth and freesom of choice are the main things I've always liked about classic Sonic (along with brilliant geometric art, though since this game is based on Shadow I can excuse it being visually dark). I disagree, backtracking on occasion is Sonic. People who overemphasized the speed and said that was what defined the games used to bug me even back then. Now this game almost certainly won't do those qualities as well as the Genesis games, but what you've said has encouraged me.

When I first read this I thought it said Harley.
I still think it's a typo of Harley. o.o
ONTOPIC: I would LOVE to get this, despite the bad points, but I am poor and cannot aford it and also do not have a GameCube/XBox/PS2. So, waaah.
Cool. Kinda expected, tho, with the giant moster and Super Shadow and all. But anyway.
I just read somewhere (i think that it was the Sega of America forums) that there is an ending where: Spoilers (Select To Read): Eggman literally was killed by Shadow. It just doesn't seem right. That sucks. That can't be considered a true ending, and for the canon, can it?
looking at a picture of Gerald and Mario (From the GFAQs thread about the ending)
LOL crossover
Seriously, tho, I'm not entirely fond about that ending. D: Unfortunately, it's unlikey I'll see it myself for a while since my local Choices and Blockbusters don't have it in to rent and there's no way I'm buying it unless I can take it back afterwards (especially so if I can swap it for, say...SC3.)
That said, I would like to hear the Live and Learn remix that was mentioned...anywhere online to get it, by pure stroke of luck?
Forgive me, my reaction to this game, and the ones preceding it has been mostly guttural. I've enjoyed them, but I can't say I have a "well developed" opinion of what games should be. The camera never bothered me, the graphics never stood out, and I've been able to follow things easily enough.
I'm sorry for not being sophisticated enough and "part of the problem."
