That is so awesome! Dr. What and Dr. Gloom are fairly interesting names for Dr. R... Perhaps Sega can still use the names...

Well, I guess that finally puts the nail into the coffin on where the "Ivo" in Dr. Ivo Robotnik came from.

Now all we need is the why.

EDIT: Oh, I get it.

I-VO

Dr. Evil Robotnik.

Is the Dr. What name supposed to be a shout out to Dr. Who? Could the good doctor be a renegade Time Lord?

I thought it was because Ivo is Ovi backwards?

There's that too, but it appears to be no more than an unintentional reference.

Dean Sitton, the guy who scanned and uploaded the above "memo" and came up with Eggman's localized name has a thread over at the Sonic Retro forums, which is where I suspect GT got that picture from (seeing as he was the last to post in that thread, to date).

Your deductive skills are as sharp as ever, PSX.

Why isn't anyone else replying in that thread? D=

Probably because the thread is several months old and any and every question the Retro-nites wanted to ask had already been asked. Or so they think?

I like the names Troll Fish and Toll Fish. Kind of funny that the ones that didn't get arrows got crappy names like Jaws and Roller. Was this guy the only SEGA employee who could name enemies?

What does the text at Eggman say?

I downloaded the original uploaded RAR containing that memo (before it was resized) and other documents, and I recall not being able to make out what it said there even then (not that I tried very hard to). So naturally, I promptly deleted it off my hard drive. Going back to look again, it would appear that the link Dean provided expired, as he warned.

As for your other question:

the game was in development, I added creative support at that time. if "worked on sonic" means "named a few characters... suggested ideas" then I worked on sonic. but, all I did was name some of the US characters... "working" on a game to me means actually making one, sharing in its success. that did not happen as it relates to sonic. I didnt get to do that until some time later. my history at sega at that time was suggesting ideas to anyone that would listen. many ideas, suggestion were turned down others used.

as far as the change, its as if someone held up an object and said "what do you call this"? ... meaning I didnt create the object... I just named it. I found the list someone else asked about - other names that I suggested that were rejected. other robotnik names were, doctor X, Doctor Gloom, Dr. What.

the producers call the shots. I was a lowly game councilor, after I finished saying "call the ladybug with one wheel a motobug, psycho cycle, put butt, or wheely bug"..then id go back to where I was supposed to be. now days you will not find much interdepartmental back and forth - they keep this sort of stuff from happening by keeping employee types together. testers and other lower positions just don't mingle with producers like they used to back in the day.

I found a list of "nicknames" for robotnik/names that sonic could call him that I suggested:

mister badwrench
mr. bad year
fatty lobotnik
