Who exactly is Silver? The only thing I know about him is his name and that he is from the future.

Silver the Hedgehog is largely irreleveant because he is from a timeline that did not/will not take place in the SegaSonic canon.
His only relevance is that he is the character that transported Blaze the Cat from an irrelevant alternate timeline to a relevant alternate diminsion, and in so doing also happened to seal what might as well be called a God into Blaze in the process. (Which may be the reason Blaze is both a Princess and Guardian of the Sol emeralds in the Rush series.)
As is, he no longer, nor did he ever exist. This is good news.
(Sonic Rivals is about a damn, evil camera thus is not counted.)

Psst. They're joking about Shadow and Amy. Its a reference to Sonic stuff being based on Dragonball stuff - y'know, 7 Chaos Emeralds/7 Dragon Balls, Super Sonic/Super Saiyan or whatever. Shadow is often compared to Vegeta, and Silver is sometimes compared to Trunks, what with being from the future and psychic or whatever (I don't know Dragonball, so I don't know is this is all right, but go along with me here and hopefully someone will correct the errors and fill in the blanks).
Soooooooooo, since Trunks in Dragonball is the future child of Vegeta and Bulma, or something, people make the joke that Shadow (remember he's Vegeta, or whatver) and Amy (who for some reason is Bulma, or something) have the future child of Silver... like in the future... because he's.... Trucks. Right? Can someone throw me a bone here?
But here's the point. Silver is NOT REALLY the son of Shadow or Amy. For all we know, he's not the son of anyone signifcant (*knows that right now someone at Sega is cookin' up something to make that happen). For now, he's just a (opinion warning) lame hedgehog from the future that has so far only had a signifcant role in Sonic 06 and the two Sonic Rivals games. But, remember, Sonic06 never~ happened~!
