1 hour rush playthrough, instead of the usual in depth style.

There is a reason why the new SEGA can't do this right, and most people, even fans, have absolutely no clue why the Genesis games were so good. To read theories about it is like reading the nonsensical conformist ramblings of a bad art critic. Yeah, I've said it before, the fundamental component is freedom, but here are some impressions.

  • I started out just wanting to run through act 1 in 30 seconds. Then I kept going on a whim.
  • To borrow a great early 90's cartoon quote, this game is "simple complexity in its finest."
  • I loved the fact that I was able to jump off walls, ceilings, or angles during a run to pop into just the right spot where I wanted to go. The more impressive thing is how often the level design subtly places such opportunities and rewards them, without forcing you into it or even hinting at it. Just out of nowhere my brain thinks that jumping off that spot would be useful, and I do it, and making a smooth landing or reaching a spot more elegantly than normal is FUN. Contrast this to the "in your face" design of not only Sonic in 3D but most games. Even in good games it's all about doing what you're supposed to do or finding a contrived secret. "Oh I'm supposed to do that? Wow I did it and won. I feel empty inside."
  • Sonic 2 has numerous cheap deaths, which is funny considering the whining on that subject. The core is so good, plus the control, that it's inconsequential.
  • No jarring cutscenes. No final fantasy wannabeism. No pre-scripted go through the motions gameplay. No constant repetitive actions to be "grinded" over and over (AHEM, I am speaking of you, RPGs). No button mashing. No sitting around and watching somebody's LUA skills.
  • I'm in the middle of Metropolis Zone and thinking of how this is mentally stimulating because of the aformentioned ability to be creative and how rare it seems to be for a game to accomplish that in replay.
  • How many satisfying games can you complete in 1 hour? How many of them can also work well as a 5 hour in depth game? I do like long games, but the greats, like Sonic and Mario, can be a one-sitting game too. They are loaded with optional content that can be played in many ways. Sometimes I just want a game that I can relax on for a quick break, and few games that aren't, like, mini-games, deliver that. Sonic 2 isn't like playing Tetris, there's an ending you can get in an hour and it really is satisfying.

    the fundamental component is freedom

I agree. Now whaddaya say we go to other forums and sites and try to tell the idiots who think the sole foundation of the series is speed...that the real fundamental component is freedom...

Obviously, the moral of this story is that Sega needs to hire more Americans to "stimulate" the team into creative overload. A little competition will get them out of their developmental rut! They might even have some of that fire left over for a sequel once they kick the Americans out.

I agree with that Vec. Sadly I think Sega stopped making games like this because they aren't hip and cutting edge, which is what the main stream wants. They are excellent games, but its not they view as what most people want. And I'm talking game companies as a whole. Maybe if they got out of that mindset we would see another classic Sonic game.

Nice one, Veckums. Simplicity is often the key.

Did you complained about the camera angles? ** shot and buried **

At any rate, consider playing the three games in a row. There are subtle differences between each game.

Now go over to Sega and make them make a good Sonic game so I can die happy.

Why though? That's what I don't get about Sonic & the secret rings!

...And Sonic 2 is my all time favourite Sonic game.
