Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I didn't see any introduction threads, so I'm introducing myself here. Great place you guys have.:thumbsup

Anyway, I was reading the 'Sonic is not speed' thread below, and, I thought, how do you people here approach Sonic games? Do you like to speed through the levels, or do you like to explore?

I've always taken the latter approach myself. It's just so satisfying when you find that 1-Up you never knew was there, or that secret passage you missed all those times, or that elusive Super Ring chamber. I definitely agree with those who insist that the (early) Sonic games were designed this in mind. I think the whole speed factor was more of an advertising gimmick than anything.

So, which do you prefer?

There's no point in asking it in a new topic when the relevant thread was, as you said, the "Sonic is not about speed" thread. All the defenses and complaints are there. Asking outside of that thread's just redundant.

Welcome though.

This is another topic about people's styles, though.

Thanks and welcome!

Now I am definitely the explore type. I like to do things like collect every ring in a level (so I prefer levels where you can backtrack) in Sonic 2, or go for 999 rings in S3&K by using the glowing spheres bonus stage. Games that I find new things in 5 years after playing them (like S3&K) are good games to me. So naturally I like Team Chaotix not only as a big fan of the characters but because their gameplay is just what I like to do (even their team blast gains rings, and using it strategically can dramatically increase your ring totals).

I prefer a nice mix of the two, so this is why I think the SA2 ranking system is good, because it encourages you to balance exploring for more points from items/robots while still keeping a strict time. It's a shame the levels in SA2 were nowhere near good enough for this though, and Sonic heroes or Sonic 360 weren't any better for it either.

First time through I may just speed through. Other times I'll try alternate routes I find through each playthrough, but as I said, recent Sonic games don't really allow this.

I also prefer to explore and collect goodies. Collecting rings has always been my favorite thing to do in Sonic games and I've always advanced through the levels carefully, to prevent loss of rings. I destroyed all the enemies in the stage and always headed for the nearest shield before collecting all the rings.
But when I was done with that, I just wanted to get away as fast as possible and this is were Sonic's speed was good to me. Some levels in Sonic CD were frustrating because they didn't allow you to do that. (The near impossible to get through Metallic Madness past comes to mind and Stardust Speedway).
I also enjoyed the treasure hunting and fishing stages in Sonic Adventure a lot, because they allowed you to run freely about and in Big's case even to swim! I loved that secret passage in Emerald Coast! n_n I wish Big had had bigger levels.

Indeed, I know that people disliked Big's stages because the weren't "Sonic", but I loved them, I'd take that over what we had Big doing in Sonic Heroes (A Knuckles type replacement...ooookaaaay)
As far as 2D Sonic games go, it isn't all about Speed, which is what a lot of the recent games like Sonic Advance 2 forgot, even though I liked Advance 2, it was pretty much "RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN JUMP TRICK RUN PITFALL START AGAIN."
Wheras Sonic Advance 1, although slower, felt a lot more like the original Sonic games, and for that I enjoy it a lot more.
Sonic Advance 3 was...strange, I did NOT like it at all, I know many people did, but I didn't, they way it was done was very different, I can't explain it, but I didn't enjoy it.

As far as 3D Sonics go, I would say that Sonic Adventure 1 had the best Stage design, the whole way it was done was very faithful to Sonic.
The same goes for SA2 (well, near the beginning of the game anyway, it kinda got a bit linear towards the end)
And it looks like Sonic on 360 follows the SA2 style of stages, which is what I like to see, At least it's not going to be the same as Sonic Heroes this time!

I like my Sonic games to blend both speed and exploration. Sonic was never meant to be a Zelda-esque "play until your thumbs bleed" epic, but it always offered repeat value as you searched for secret passages, hidden rings, and mastered the Special Stages/mini-games. Problem lately has been changing gameplay. Sometimes they're implemented well- Battle had simple and intuitive control and the cards/skill points you collected helped you customize a fighter. Only real complaint was using the L button for both camera and guarding (I point this out only cuz the Select button was unused). Other outings weren't so sucessful. The tag action part of SonAdv3 felt gimmicky. Aside from a few swings of Amy's hammer and the forced co-op of Sonic and Eggman I didn't use the R button much. If you're gonna introduce a new gameplay mechanic I wanna put it use to defeat bosses or solve puzzles or SOMETHING. I don't want to rely on it constantly (like SonAdv2's jump tricks or Heroes formations) but I would like it think there was a reason to include it beyond "marketing device". Maybe that's asking too much outta Sonic.

I like...speed. Speed is more interesting,
but it should have a lil exploration in it-
but not the kinda exploration like the Mystic Ruins. THAT just got confusin'!

I prefer to mix the two styles, or at least have the choice to. It's versatility that attracts me.

I like the freedom to choose between trying to blitz through a level in the shortest time possible or have to make a dash for the exit with three seconds to spare because I've been trying to grab every last ring or max out on extra lives without changing levels. 🙂

Agreeing with that, here.
I like to be able to explore, but sometimes you just want to see what the next level looks like.

I'm an exploring-type. My favorite style of play introduced in the 3D games is still the treasure hunting levels in SA and SA2 for that reason--though they didn't put enough traps/enemies in SA2 until you got to the "hard" version most of the time.

The only time I try to blow through a level is if I'm doing the time attack or I'm forced to do it, such as in SA2. Otherwise, explorer here! Besides you find faster routes through exploring first. 😉

I'm a bit of both, I love to speed through some levels, like Chemical Plant, and I love to explore others, like Hydro City. Receently I went through completely different routs in Hydro City and Marble Garden, I had never been on them before.

This reminds me of the Bartle test thing. I was mainly Social with a fair about to Explorer mixed in.
