This is a topic for writing up an info page on Sonic 360 in a collaborative manner. The Sonic 2 page is a good model to use. Media may be useful (music, covers, art, prototypes, magazine scans, instruction scans), but can't be added until the downloads page is updated.

Background info

When Sonic The Hedgehog (Known as Sonic Next, Sonic 06, or Sonic 360 by fans, so it is not confused with the original Sonic the Hedgehog game of the same name) was announced on September 9th 2005, Yuji Naka was quoted as saying Sonic the Hedgehog would be a "re-invention" of the Sonic the hedgehog series. He also said: "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15 years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems." First screenshots appeared to indicate that this would be the first Sonic-only adventure for a long time, but Shadow and new character Silver the hedgehog were confirmed, and most of the old characters would be returning in minor roles.

A lot of things were re-invented for this game as Naka said, Sonic and friends are given new body proportions so he would appear more human-like (Sonic is now around 5"), and Dr Eggman has now been given more human-like proportions too. Sonic the Hedgehog has also been said to be the first Sonic game to be set in the "human world" so it is unknown where this leaves Sonic Adventure 1 & 2.

Similar to Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Rush, Sonic the Hedgehog uses the same voice actors from the Sonic X anime which was dubbed by 4kids entertainment, who have also dubbed animes such as pokmon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and One Piece, so you may just recognise some of the voices from these shows.

General gameplay notes

-Sonic the Hedgehog is split into three "episodes", one each for Sonic, Shadow, and Silver, there is also a "last" episode when the prior three are completed. Within each episode, you will play as Sonic, Shadow or Silver primarily, but as you go through, you will be able to play as some of the supporting characters, and even playing one of the other main characters as you work your way through the 10 different levels, which gives it a little bit of A Sonic Heroes feel.

-The game is set in the town of Soleanna, which has an Eastern European feel to it, and also takes inspiration from Venice, with the appearance of the gondolas and waterways you'll see throughout the town

-When playing as Sonic, you will be accompanied/aided by Tails and Knuckles the Echidna

-When playing as Shadow, you will be aided/accompanied by Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega

-When playing as Silver, you will be aided/accompanied by Amy Rose and Blaze the Cat.

-The game makes use of the famed "Havok physics engine", so objects and robot pieces will move, fall and crumble just like they would in the real world.

-Adventure fields make a welcome return from Sonic Adventure, this time referred to as "town stages", and will see you exploring different parts of Soleanna, however, they are a lot more expansive than they were in Sonic Adventure, as there are missions you can accept from the people of the town, and you can buy upgrades from the shops in town which makes the town stages very RPG-esque.

-The ranking system from Sonic Adventure 2 onwards also makes a return, but this time getting higher ranks will give you ring bonuses, which you can use to buy upgrades for your character from the shop.

Glitches and errors

In Shadows episode after you complete the Kingdom Valley level, in the scene that follows Rouge says "book of darkness" instead of "scepter of darkness"

the manual contains a lot of information that was cut out of the final game, possibly due to the game being rushed out. here are all the errors in the manual:

-On page 7, Under the action gauge, it says things about custom actions draining the action gauge, and levelling up custom actions. These parts are not true.
-On page 11, a shield power-up is mentioned though it doesn't exist in the game anywhere.
-On page 12, under custom action, it says that custom actions use the action gauge. This is not true.
-On page 13, the part of the first paragraph and second paragraph talks about levelling up custom actions and the like. None of this is true.
-On page 14, Shadow's Chaos blast move is said to "wipe out everything in a 10-metre range" The actual range is much shorter.
-On pages 17 and 18, Tails and Omega are said to use a gauge to show how long they can fly and hover, there is no gauge anywhere.
-On page 17, Knuckles's glide is said to "punch any enemies in your way" this is not true. Touching enemies while gliding makes you lose all your rings.
-On page 18, under Rouge's controls, nothing is said about Rouge's ability to plant bombs in the walls, even though this is a vital ability.

Gameplay

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic's stages are focused primarily on speed, and are split into normal stages, Super-speed stages, and princess stages.

Moves (Xbox 360)

Homing attack (A during jump)
The same move from other 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games, which automatically homes in on an enemy and strikes, if no enemies are in range, then Sonic will perform a "Jump dash"

Spin dash (Hold X while still, then release)
Hold the X button to start charging up the spin dash, then release X to propel Sonic forward in a burst of speed with this classic move.

Attack (X while standing still)
Use this "sweep kick" to attack enemies around you.

Sliding attack* (X while running)
While running, press X to have Sonic slide forward and destroy all enemies he makes contact with. Also allows you to squeeze through very small spaces.

Light Dash* (X near a path of rings)

Bound jump* (X while jumping)
Similar to the bounce jump ability from Sonic Adventure 2, press X while Sonic is jumping to make him bounce and go higher, or destroy something that is directly under your feet, repeat this to bounce even higher

Custom actions* (D-pad to assign one, execute with RT)
When you have purchased one of the four coloured games from the shop in Soleanna, you can assign a custom action to RT with the D-Pad to execute a special move, all of which will aid you in different ways.

Blue gem: (Mach Speed) - allows Sonic to perform a high speed boost when RT is pressed.

Sky gem: (Gun drive) - Sonic throws a gem in the direction you choose, and Sonic instantly speeds to where you threw it

White gem: (Homing smash) - Press RT in mid-air to stop, and direct your homing attack with more accuracy

Green gem: (Tornado) - Whips up a Sonic tornado to destroy everything in close range

Red gem: (Slow) - Slows down time for enemies around you. Very handy for some town missions and bosses.

Yellow gem: (Thunder guard) - raises a magnetic field around you to attract nearby rings

Purple gem: (Scale) - Shrinks Sonic. While shrunk, Sonic runs without stopping, and can infinitely jump. Pretty useful to reach secret areas that are high up.

NOTE: Those actions marked with a * must be purchased from the shop in Soleanna before they can be used.

Super-speed stages
In these sections, Sonic automatically runs forward at mach speed, and all you have to do is move left to right and jump to avoid obstacles and get to the goal

Princess Stages
in these stages, you will be carrying Elise, and so you will not be able to perform any custom actions or moves assigned to the X button apart from sliding. However, with Elise with you, you can hold RT to raise an aura around you that allows you to walk on unstable terrain such as quicksand, and allows you to knock out enemies.

Enemies

(Note: There are no official names for the robots in Sonic the hedgehog)

Footsoldier robot: Eggman's common footsoldier. It is equipped with a rapid-fire vulcan cannon, which causes you to lose one ring every time you're hit by it and is also equipped with small missiles, which will make you lose all your rings. Some of them will also come with jetpacks so they can hover and fly. They only take one hit to destroy.

Flying robot: Similar to GUN's flying robots you saw in Sonic Adventure 2. They are similar to the footsoldiers in that they have the same vulcan cannon which causes you to lose a ring every time you're hit. You'll be destroying a lot of these as you homing attack across huge gaps. They take one hit to destroy

Shield robot: Small, slow moving robots with a shield on each hand, they can block your attacks when they put their hands together, and will attack by slamming their hands into the ground to create a shockwave around them. The best way to defeat these is a homing attack on top or behind them. They take one hit to defeat normally, or two hits if you attack them through their shield.

Flying missile robot: A flying robot that surrounds itself with small missiles, so you may have to take out these before you can hit the robot itself.

Jetpack robot: Similar to the footsoldier robot, only they can hover above ground and are armed with larger homing missiles and a vulcan cannon. They take one hit to defeat.

Scorpion robot: Robot shaped like a scorpion. It will launch small bombs at you from it's tail, and if you get caught in it's blast radius, you will lose all your rings. They are not very agile, so use this to your advantage. They can also cling to walls, so watch out for that. They take one hit to destroy.

Rhino robot: Similar to the rhino-like robots from Sonic Adventure, if they see you, they will quickly make a beeline charge at you or may even throw a bomb at you, they may also raise a shield to reflect attacks and psychokinesis, so try to attack them from behind or above. They take one hit to defeat.

Gold rhino robot: similar to the rhino robot, but they have more endurance, and may be acting as a leader for a group of rhino robots. It takes two hits to defeat.

Stealth scorpion robot: An upgraded scorpion robot, it is now invisible so you will have to look out for it, it's bombs are not invisible however, so you can pinpoint the enemies location from where they are coming from. It takes two hits to defeat.

Roller Scorpion robot: Another variation of the scorpion robot, they have the same bombs as the normal scorpion robot, but these ones can roll into a ball and charge at you, making them more agile, however once they've rolled, they become stunned and unable to move, so attack them then. They may also be the leader of some standard scorpion robots, so defeating this one may destroy the lot. It takes two hits to defeat.

Walker robot: A walker like robot similar to style to the walker bosses from Sonic Adventure 2, they can fire 2 huge lasers from either side which have a long range, and fire lots of small missiles in succession, So getting it from behind is ideal. It takes four hits to defeat.

Hover walker robot: Similar to the flying dog boss from Sonic Adventure 2. This robot comes equipped with a vulcan cannon and small, successive missiles. It takes four hits to defeat.

Shield leader robot: Same as the standard robot, but its shield is tougher and has a higher endurance. It takes 2 hits to defeat.

Laser soldier robot: In upgraded footsoldier. It is equipped with a vulcan cannon and fires multiple laser bolts. Hit them quick before they can fire their lasers at you. Can also come with jetpacks. They take two hits to defeat.

Mega robot: The largest and most deadly Eggman robot, it is equipped with a vulcan cannon, and can launch it's huge fists at you, it can also withstand multiple attacks, so be careful, another variation is that a robot can have two balls on it's hands that it can launch at you. The best way to defeat this is to aim at the core in the centre of it's body to knock it down, and attack the core when it's down, as it cannot attack. It takes around 5 hits to defeat.

Iblis enemies

Iblis Lizard: the standard Iblis creature which will breathe fire at you, just avoid that and it's easy to defeat. It takes one hit to defeat. The purple variation takes two hits to defeat.

Iblis Worm: A worm like creature that comes out of the ground unexpectedly, it launches spikeballs at you, but it is slow, and mostly immobile. It takes two hits to defeat. The purple variation takes three hits to defeat.

Iblis Bat: A flying creature that can drop spikeballs beneath it, you'll mostly be using these to homing attack across huge gaps, and they may light up, indicating which one to hit next. It takes one hit to defeat. The purple variation takes two hits to defeat.

Iblis Golem: The largest and most powerful of the Iblis creatures. It can throw a huge spiked ball at you and has good endurance so watch out. It takes three hits to defeat. The purple variation takes five hits to defeat

Statistics

At the end of every mission, stage or boss fight, you will be rewarded a 100 point bonus for every ring you finished the stage with.

You will also be given a time bonus at the end of every mission, stage, or boss fight, but this varies from level to level.

Enemy bonuses

The more hits an enemy takes to defeat, the more points you will get for beating it as shown below:

-1 hit - 100 Points
-2 hits - 120 Points
-3 hits - 300 Points
-4 or 5 hits - 1000 Points

Leader bonuses
Sometimes you will come across a swarm of a certain type of robot, they may also be circling around a "leader" which is a different colour and an upgraded version compared to the rest of the swarm. If you go directly for the leader instead of the minor robots around it, upon defeating the leader, all the swarm will disappear, and will get 600 points for three robots in the swarm and 500 more for every other robot there was excluding the leader. A handy tip if you're going for the S rank.

Multiplayer

Sonic the hedgehog offers two types of multiplayer action: The first is a tag mode, the other is a battle mode

Tag mode: Both players will choose from Sonic, Shadow and Silver and work through levels collecting the chaos emeralds. You have to use the unique skills of each character and work together to complete the levels, both players collect their own rings, but share lives, if one character dies, they will reappear at the last checkpoint. You can also save and return to your campaign whenever you like.

Battle mode: Similar to Sonic Adventure 2, two people can race each other to the goal at the end of the stage, attacking each other as they see fit. Both players must choose either Sonic, Shadow or Silver, and choose from the levels Wave Ocean, Dusty Desert, White Acropolis, Crisis City, Flame Core, Kingdom Valley and Aquatic Base.

Zones

Sonic, Shadow and Silver all go through the same 10 zones, but in a different order, and using their unique powers to access new paths and areas.

Sonic's stages

1. Wave Ocean
2. Dusty Desert
3. White Acropolis
4. Crisis City
5. Flame Core
6. Radical Train
7. Tropical Jungle
8. Wave Ocean (Tails)
9. Kingdom Valley
10. Aquatic Base

Shadow's stages

2. Tropical Jungle
3. Wave Ocean (Blaze)
4. Dusty Desert
5. White Acropolis
6. Radical Train

9. Flame Core

Action stages

Wave Ocean
A seaside level that's very similar to the first levels of Sonic Adventure and Sonic heroes, especially the scene where a whale chases you across the pier.

Dusty Desert
A huge desert level, there's loads of quicksand around, so make sure not to fall into it

White Acropolis
A snowy mountain which houses Eggman's secret base, as such it is full of searchlights and robots. If you are spotted by the searchlights, more robots will appear and confront you. If you're playing as Sonic, there will be a cool snowboading section at the start of it.

Crisis City
A huge city in the future that has incurred the wrath of Iblis, so there are lots of Iblis creatures about, and a lot of hazards such as fire spurting from the ground.

Flame Core
A volcano in the future where Iblis resides, there is a lot of lava and fire bursting from the ground, so watch where you're going.

Radical Train
In this level, you have to quickly hope across conveyor belts, weight scales and rail lines to hit switches to disarm the bombs on the rails before they make contact with Elise's train.

Tropical Jungle
Here you'll be doing a lot of swinging from vines, and jumping on turtles backs to get across pools of water. Make sure you only jump off the vines when the flower at the bottom of them lights up.

Kingdom Valley
The old Soleanna Castle, before the disaster 10 years ago. Use your homing attack to jump onto ropes to propel yourself upwards and be careful of crumbling staircases.

Aquatic Base
A huge base under Soleanna's waterways, use the magnetic balls to move across levels, but remember that they will disappear once they come into contact with a laser.

End Of The World
This is only available in the last episode, where you'll be visiting parts of different levels to collect the 7 chaos emeralds with 7 different characters. be careful not to get sucked in by the huge purple balls of energy and watch out for the orange balls of energy which hurl crates and other objects at you, you can stop these temporarily by touching the orbs with the eagle statue on them to slow down the space-time rift.

Bosses

Egg Cerberus
(Encountered after Dusty desert as Sonic)
(Encountered after White Acropolis as Shadow)

A huge mechanical dog created by Eggman. Dodge his attacks and when it stops, grind on it's now lowered tail. you will now grab it by the head and you will now have control of it. Quickly manoeuvre it to crash into the opposite side of the arena, so you have built up enough speed to damage it. Keep avoiding its attacks and repeating this trick. On the final attack, it will throw you off quickly, so homing attack the horn while you are close to a wall to finish it. It takes 4 hits in total to destroy it.

Iblis Phase I
(Encountered after Crisis City as Silver)
Nothing too hard. Just pick up everything you can and throw it at Iblis. You can also catch the flaming rocks he spews and throw them back. When he throws a building at you, just watch for the shadow and move out of it's way. Easy.

Silver the Hedgehog I
(Encountered after Dusty Desert as Sonic)

This can be tricky. Make sure Silver doesn't get close and makes eye contact with you at all costs, because he can trap you like this. Run to the other side of the level, and try to make him run near some objects. When you hear him say something like "How about this?" it means he's manipulating objects, and can't stop you. So deliver a homing attack on him and run away to the other end of the level again quickly. Repeat this for easy victory.

Sonic the Hedgehog
(encountered after Dusty Desert as Silver)

The main tactic is to try and throw stuff at him to stop his homing attack which is hard to avoid. If stars appear around his head, Sonic is stunned he will not move for a few seconds, so use this time wisely and throw as many items as you can at him.

Iblis Phase II
(Encountered after Flame Core as Sonic)
(Encountered after Flame Core as Shadow)

You start on a couple of platforms floating in lava, keep dodging Iblis's attacks and eventually some more platforms will fall, allowing you to advance forward. Eventually, you will be able to hit one of the three lights with your homing attack, which will draw Iblis to it. When he crashes on the platform, his eye is exposed and that's when you move in and homing attack him. After this, the rock platforms will crumble and the process repeats itself. ONLY go to hit another light immediately after hitting Iblis if you're feeling brave or experienced, or you'll just end up in a pool of lava with no platforms. He takes 4 hits to defeat. This strategy works for both Sonic and Shadow.

Egg Genesis
(Encountered after Radical Train as Sonic)
(Encountered after White Acropolis as Silver)

You may notice that this looks a lot like the E-105 Zeta boss from Sonic Adventure. Anyway, as Sonic run around and avoid the missiles it fires. Wait until it's "arms" extend and look for the arm that has robots near it. Use these robots to homing attack onto the arm, run up it and onto the centre of the head, where you do a bounce jump (X button while jumping) on the head until it throws you off, and it loses an arm. It gets harder every time you get onto the arm, as Eggman may launch missiles at you, or you have to wait until the head flashes until your attack has any effect. When the boss is out of health, it will try to crash on top of you, just run around and make sure you're nowhere near it when it crashes.

As Silver, look for the crates around the edge of the area and throw them at the centre of the robot, you can also catch the missiles it fires and send them back at it. Also watch out for smaller robots and the lasers it fires. When it is out of health, it will try to crash on top you as with Sonic, so just get out of its way.

Silver the Hedgehog II
(Encountered after Radical Train as Shadow)

The same tactic applies as when you thought him as Sonic, just try to lead him through objects and keep away from him at al times, when he says something like "Take this!" you know he's manipulating objects and is defenceless. So homing attack him now. unfortunately, Shadow's recovery time isn't as fast as Sonics, so he may grab you before you can get away. So always make sure you have rings before you attack him.

Shadow the Hedgehog
(Encountered after Radical Train as Silver)

Similar to how you fought Sonic, throw stuff at him like crazy. When he is stunned, you can try to pick him up and throw him, but keep as much distance between him and you as you can, because he will recover quickly and attack you.

Mephiles Phase 1
(Encountered as Shadow after Tropical Jungle as Rouge)

Fill your action gauge as quick as you can by attacking the small black creatures. If one gets a hold of you, repeatedly attack to shake it off. Once the gauge is full, activate chaos mode and Mephiles appears from Shadow's...shadow. Now is your chance to attack him. You may want to wait until he attacks, as that's when he'll let down his defences. Repeat until health is drained.

For the second part of the battle, Omega appears and aids Shadow. For this part, just focus on Mephiles and he'll eventually go down.

Egg Wyvern
(Encountered after Aquatic Base as Sonic)
You're on a floating platform in the sky, while Eggman circles in the Egg Wyvern. Dodge the lasers by watching the markers on the ground, and wait for him to swoop on you. This is when you homing attack onto the horn of the Egg Wyvern to take control of it (Like the Egg Cerberus) now you want to fly it into one of the metal crate things floating around. Make sure you get a good direct hit, or the boss won't sustain damage. If you're having trouble. Using the red gem custom action to slow down time slightly is a huge help. When he is hit, he will launch some electric needle things to destroy at bit of the platform, so make sure you're on a safe platform. Later on, You will have to use the homing attack to attack two bots and put you within range of Eggman. For the final attack, Eggman will charge directly at you and the last platform. Make you time it right (Use the red gem if you have to) and homing attack directly onto the cockpit to stop him.

Mephiles phase II
(Encountered after Dusty Desert as Shadow)

Firstly, avoid all the falling objects and wait for the shadow creatures to appears. Now, you have to defeat them by waiting until the pink core is exposed, avoiding their lasers and shockwaves, and then using chaos spear to stun and a homing attack to defeat them. Keep doing this until the action gauge is full, then activate chaos mode to expose Mephiles. deal as much damage to him as you can before the gauge runs out. When he makes clones of himself, you need to homing attack and chaos snap your way to the top where the real Mephiles is and finish him.

Iblis phase III
(Encountered after Flame Core as Silver)

As with all Silvers bosses, pick up rocks after throw them at the boss. Try to pick up the rocks he throws too. When Iblis is too close, he will knock off a bit of the platform, but it leaves his head exposed. Hover over on top of it's head, and hold RT on the psychokinesis mark on his head for lots of damage. If he charges up a huge ball of energy to fire at you from a distance, you HAVE to pick this up with your psychokinesis and hurl it back at him or more of your platform will be gone. Just make sure you deal as much damage as you can at every opportunity or he'll destroy all your platform.

Solaris
(Encountered after End Of The World in last episode)

Now you're playing as Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver against the combined Iblis and Mephiles: Solaris. First the general rules: press Y to switch between the three and recharge rings, each hit Solaris gets you with makes you lose 10 rings, so switch before you have less than 10 rings. While preparing for an attack, hold A and move left or right to dodge Solaris's attacks.
As Sonic, hold RT to charge your action gauge, then hold X to attack Solaris when it's full, if it's not full, Solaris will just deflect the attack.
As Shadow, Again hold RT to fill the action gauge and press X to unleash the Red Chaos Spear
As Silver, you just do what you always do and pick up spiky balls and other objects and hurl them at Solaris.

The first part, you can only attack Solaris with a certain character at a time, first start off with Silver, then Sonic, then Shadow, after your character can't damage Solaris any more it's time to switch character. After you've done it with Silver, Sonic and Shadow in that order, the order doesn't matter from there.

During the second form, Solaris blocks all attacks, only when he's firing lasers will he let down his guard. Keep attacking with all characters until it takes enough damage and goes down for good.

Tips

-Stuck in a town stage wondering where to go next? check your radar. Yellow dots are people you can talk to, red dots are people tat have important information on what to do next, and blue dots are people who have town missions for you.

-After you have completed a town stage mission, the game will not automatically, so don't forget to save after you've done a mission, because if you run out of lives in the action stage, you'll have to do the town stage missions you did after you last saved. You will be asked to save after the end of every action stage though.

-After you have completed an episode, you still may not have enough rings to buy all the custom actions, so you must either do remaining town missions, or go through the final stage/boss again.

-For some reason, you are only allowed one save file for Sonic the Hedgehog. If you are playing the Xbox 360 version, just create another gamer profile and start a new game with that profile.

-There are two shops in Soleanna. One in the main town near the fountain. And one in the New City district, which is a floating screen which is located in the clearing in the centre of the district.
