E3: Sega Screening, Pt. 2: Next-Gen Sonic, Virtua Fighter Demo for 360
Filed under Xbox 2
The second half of the Sega screening was supposed to be a technology demonstration, but they also hinted at a still-unannounced Sonic for the Xbox 360.
A demo labeled simply Hedgehog? showed a first-person perspective as Sonic zipped through a forest and plains. The game also jumped perspective to third-person occasionally, showing Sonic fighting a robot or bouncing off the walls in some ruins. The brief video ended with Sonic being surrounded by an army of robots that unleash on him, but just when you think the big-headed insectivor is down he starts to glow and shoots into the sky. The screens goes black after showing Sonic floating in the sky, pulsating gold.
Prior to the Sega bit, the video showed snippets of Virtua Fighter characters flexing, posing and going through their little personal katas. There was also video of an Afterburner-type game which showed a background that was either video of real world places or amazingly details images.
Hopefully some screens or video will pop up shortly, unless this was supposedly behind doors anyway.

Get it while its FRESH. (by fresh I mean awful hidden camera and from miles away so you can barely see anything :P)
That's nice. But how exactly is 1st/3rd person Sonic running through some random environment then going Super constitute possible new game, I wonder?
That's as crazy as people claiming that the FF7 PS3 tech demo is prelude to a major remake.
I'm sure it looks fantastic, though.
Mmm. From the small, small screen I made out, that looks pretty much what I want Sonic games to look like.
But then, there's not much stopping them from doing stuff like that THIS generation... T_T;
No, I don't thik that could be done with today's consoles, or at least I haven't seen anything this generation that can achieve the effects that video demostrates and NOT be pre-rendered CGI animation. Of course, we're talking about a tech demo. It's displaying what the technology can do without any of the limits that usually come with console technology.
Cool. Egg Carrier.
And it was done w/o prerendering. I'm amazed. That was insane. Being so far away it was still spectacular. It almost felt like an Armored Core intro at some points. Hopefully this is the future of Sonic.
Please NOT a X box only game, please...
Tiny, blurry, warbled... and the most beautiful Sonic-related thing I've ever seen. Please let that become a fully-fledged game. The effects, the robot design, the true feeling of cool and real speed - that's just awesome. All my hope are belong to this.
i really like that video no matter how small it is.
...is it just me, or does this seem Sonic X-ish sorta. for some reason it feels kinda that way. i mean like how Sonic did his spin dash. and Super Sonic (oh god he was beautiful in this video! ) he gives me the after effect of the Super Sonic in Sonic X sorta.
I can really feel the sense of speed in that 360 tech demo, Sonic running through landscapes, fighting and evading enemies while not losing any speed at all. The scene when he finally went Super Sonic was pretty impressive too. Though I do wish the screen was a little bigger, so I could see it in more detail.
Hopefully this is the future of the Sonic series. If so, I can't wait.
I had the same feeling, janucheese.
That video looks totally, 100%, mighty awesome! O.O
I want it as a game. NOW. o.o
Has anyone else noted that OTHER blue speeding thing early on in the video, that looks sorta like Metal Sonic?
it's not working for me, Justine.
Its the exact same one as the xboxyde one I linked a few posts up :/
I guess someone just clipped out the Sonic bit and didnt credit the original source, Shogmaster. (naughties!!)
This is another reason I'm reserving an Xbox 360 and picking it up at launch. To date this is best demo of the Xbox 360 hardware since alot of the demos that they showed for the system looked like stuff the Xbox could do without a sweat but what is not said about those demo is that they are being made on the alpha development kits and only use a fourth of the Xbox 360's hardware.
...what?
*looks for a translation*
Hope he knows the PS3 will be more powerful than the XBOX 360...
*sigh* I understood him. Here,

means this
This is yet another reason why I'm going to reserve an Xbox 360 and pick it up at launch. To date, this is best demo of the Xbox 360 hardware; a lot of the other demos that have been shown for the system looked like stuff the Xbox could do without a sweat. Admittedly, a fact not mentioned about the latter demos is that they are being made on the alpha development kits, and as of such, only use a fourth of the Xbox 360's final power, so that would explain why they were somewhat lackluster...
As for how the PS3 will be more powerful... true, true. The only question, though, would be whether enough programmers use that extra power for it to matter.
It's "quarter", not "fourth".
