It's true. It doesn't say it's not on rails, but considering on how the game is turning out, I doubt seriously that it will be on rails.

Never doubt Sega on this. XD

Considering the nunchuck is involved, I doubt it is, to be honest.

Unless the "forward/upwards" direction is gonna end up useless.

One can hope, no? ;o;

Not around here you can't. You have to go in with the lowest of expectations. That way, if the game is bad, you can feel vindicated in your snubbing. And if it manages to be somewhat of a decent play, you can feel pleasantly surprised.

Harsh words, stairmaster..& although sonic may not be in his best right now it is best to have faith that things will only get better,,,becuase in all honesty they can't get much worse.

stairmaster:

You should be directing this question more to the 6-12 year olds who make up the majority of the fanbase for this franchise.

As long as Sonic Team is still at the helm, this sounds like a losing bet.

Actually, the Gamespot video for Unleashed said that while the group is still called Sonic Team, the developers and game director are all brand new.

The same thing happened in Sonic 2006. New director, producer, and some new people worked on that game also.

But this isn't the Unleashed team who is making it, it is the Sonic Rings one who is creating this title. Considering I didn't care for that game either, that doesn't gives me hope.

To be fair it could be fun. While I am a bit tired of the amount of (justifiable) hate that Sonic/Sonic Team seems to get at the moment. The game isn't exactly filling me with hope.

Graphically its ok, but art syle wise this could be any game for the wii. Theres nothing there really. Admittedly judging a whole game on one level is harsh. But its the level they have chosen to sell the game. One can hope that future levels previews will look as nice as some of the ones on Secret Rings. I'm hoping for a gemstone cave with a "Hall of Mirrors" effect which could happen if Sonic fights a dragon.

And now "Why does Sonic even need a sword?" and considering how bad the gun play was in Shadow there is a concern that this will go breasts up.

Also the debate on whether or not this is a free roaming game or on rails blast, looking at the screens its hard to tell one way from another. I don't think On Rails gameplay is terrible but apparently it was in Secret Rings. The only thing that might say that this is free roaming is the fact that Knuckles is playable and Knuckles has always had things to explore. But that could be a separate game from Sonic and Shadow's.

And I expect Shadow to ride a horse.

I don't know what I want anymore. Its too hot and Soul Calibur IV has been released early to the bloody yanks. You heard.

I just found out about this game less than 15 minutes ago! Not sure what's in store for this game but I'm gonna try to be optimistic. Maybe sonic will mainly use this sward for helping him overcome obstacles and not so much combat.

That kinda defeats the purpose of wielding a sword now, doesn't it? All the same, I still say the two should not have mixed.

Okay, besides the short Sonic thing at the beginning and the slight mention of Unleashed at the end, what the heck does that video have to do with SBK or Sonic in general?

People thought Sonic was doomed after Shadow the Hedgehog

People thought Sonic was doomed after 06

People thought Sonic was doomed because of Unleashed

Now we have whiny fans thinking Sonic's doomed because he wielding some sword. We don't even know why he uses it or how long he needs to use.

He's pretty much a vegetable now. It'll take something major to get him back to full health, and I sadly don't think that'll ever happen.

If they screwed up Shadow with a gun, how do they expect not to screw up Sonic with a sword? Weapons just do not work for Sonic games, unless they're on a character like Gamma or Omega. It's nothing but pure redundancy.

goes to show, some people just have trouble letting go, screaming "why, why! it's not fair! he was so young!" all the while people are trying to pull 'em off the casket so it can be lowered without interruption...

or, uh... you know, like that creepy lady that lives down the block from you, who keeps her first love's ashes in an urn and takes it everywhere she goes. And talks to it. And sings to it.

... sleeps with it...

what we're experiencing now is her wild fantasies as she dips slowly into a deep madness... dark alter-ego! massive team ups with friends! vigilantee antihero! interspecies romance! arabian nights! beastial wrath! sword-swinging chilvaric adventures! hooo ho ho ho heeee hee hee hee!!!!

Creepily enough, Psx, that description would encompass quite a lot of the fandom.

I say let him die. Let him stay dead for a few years, then try to resurrect him after Sonic Team grows out of this silly weapons usage/super-powerful-force-of-doom DEM/epic plotline phase.

"Now we have whiny fans thinking Sonic's doomed because he wielding some sword. We don't even know why he uses it or how long he needs to use."

The 'series over'/'Sonic is dead' stuff is pretty silly seeing as we're definitely into zombie territory already. We don't know why or how long he uses the sword, but I feel very safe in guessing that it will feature very prominently. I think it'll be with us the whole way.

I'm actually completely cool with the sword because this is a spinoff. We already have Unleashed for a 'normal' Sonic adventure. The fact is that what Sonic 'is' has been screwy for nigh on a decade. Water entities, genetically engineered hedgehogs, aliens, dream worlds (Maginary World), hoverboarding, parallel dimensions (Blaze's world), genies (or as Zero Gravity reveals, alien genies!), gunplay, storybook worlds, demons, time travel, psychokinesis and pyrokinesis, werehogs - Sonic with a sword should feel comparitively normal. It's also kinda funny that many hold Sonic to what he said in one game only - a game which everyone hates and tries to ignore - and even then it was referring to firearms in particular. This is just another magical Sonic side story in yet another alternate world.

Anyway, I'm not saying that noone has a right to feel the way the do - it is justified. It's just that I'm surprised by the outcry over Sonic holding a piece of metal after all we've already been through. For me personally, nothing is a surprise or feels weird after Secret Rings (everything about it still feels strange to me) and the Werehog. We've come too far - I'm finally at the point where where all I can do is chuckle, shake my head and then say "okay, whatever, let's go with it. That's what Sonic does now for the most part, fantastical stuff with odd gameplay gimmicks - 'true' Sonic experiences are now quite rare. Sad, but it's reality.

If it turns out to be a crap game then I'll gripe, but right now it doesn't strike me as too offensive. There looks to be some normal Sonic-flavored moves - they're just 'enhanced' by the sword (that spin attack with the sword, wall sliding, etc).

i don't think sonic is doomed. i just think he has gotten to a point where i can no longer pay attention to him anymore. unlike most or, hell, everyone who posts in south island, i devote time neither to being caustic or pessimistic about the latest sonic produce that's supposed to pass for a game nor to attempting to be "cautiously optimistic" about the dear old hedgehog's ability to star in something entertaining. i simply got over this nonsense and stopped paying attention to any of it. i have no idea what's going on with any of the games currently in development, and i do not care whether they turn out to be good or not (they won't). as for this latest thing, i learned everything i would ever want to know about it as soon as i saw the cover. after all the bull##!$ that's been dished out for the past seven years, there are no words, no visuals - nothing, in fact, short of jesus christ the saviour himself coming down to earth and demanding that i play this game immediately - that will ever convince me to spend a penny on sonic the hedgehog. i don't say that to sound bitter, just apathetic.

it's silly to say that sonic is doomed for the foreseeable future, as he is raking in money with every piece of code created in his name that gets put on the market. i don't even think most pessimistic people are arguing that he's doomed, v2. i think that they're simply a little tired of seeing sonic games that seem to be built on some crazy-ass gimmick and aren't really fun for more than a week or two. oh, and that they see him as a comatose dead undead zombie vegetable on life support. nam was the only "whiny sonic fan" in this thread to even say he was doomed.

unless someone manages to work it into a conversation really well, this will hopefully be the last time i comment on something like this. from here on out, my response to anything regarding recent sonic games will be "lol".

Knowing Sega, even if they did, it rarely helps. They'll get to the "2-4 month before release" mark, and still only have an alpha build with various glitches, with only the vague promise that "it'll get better" to reassure everyone. Despite them saying that about every game they've made since 2K6, and despite that pretty much NEVER being the case.

This

Sorry Kay, but I'm gonna have to side with Toby here because I was thinking the same thing when I read your post. I mean I don't know how long they have been working on this, but at least give Sega some, even if it's a little, credit, I mean even they wouldn't start a game at the same moment that they announced it. I mean, they've been working on the Hedgehog Engine and Unleashed for about three years.

Wasn't that also the case with Sonic 06?

Okay, I admit that maybe I was being a bit too cynical, but you have to admit that Sonic Team doesn't have that good of a track record with using their time wisely.

Hey, I will gladly admit I was wrong if this game ends up being the game we've been waiting for. But considering that pretty much every single recent 3D game has been buggier than a beehive, I highly doubt that it will.

What I want to know is why wasn't this revealed at E3? Will there be a playable demo for this game at any of the other upcoming gaming conventions: Lezpig(in 2 weeks), TGS, or even E4 All?

I'm aware of what the community wants. I have no personal desire for spinoffs either, but we get a crapload of them anyway, and they always deviate in play style from the 'main' series of 3D platformers we get every 2-3 years. I'm only saying that I never expect a spinoff to be that one great 3D action platformer Sonic we all want. That would be something I would look to the aforementioned 3D speed platformer 'core' of the series for - see current example; Unleashed (though I have no such expectations of that title at this stage either). Thus the spinoff can do whatever it wants and I can simply ignore it if it turns out offensive rather than be disappointed that it wasn't what we wanted.

You needed post the nicer designed chart, Vulpix.

Also there are some rumors going around that the NP issue states that this game has and I quote:

    • [*]- First person gameplay [*]- With west rpg elements [*]- No MotionPlus compatible [*]- Coming 2009, Wii exclusive [/list:u:ee747d0b76]

[/list:o:ee747d0b76]Though I believe that has to be a joke. I mean Sega done some really retarded things with the franchise, but they can't be this retarded.

So basically the cycle goes:
1. "oooh look at this! Wow thats so cool! Finally yes!!!"
2. "Hmmm, it's seems to be ok but I've seen worse"
3. "Awww sun of a gun!! DAmn this so sux!!!! Who the hell developed this!?!?!"

We don't hate Sonic. We hate what he has become.

Can you honestly blame us for being so harsh on any new console game Sega/Sonic Team comes out with? Sonic Heroes was decent, Shadow was bad, and Sonic 06 was "oh my God how is it possible to make something this mind-numbingly awful." Almost every single time we get our hopes up about a console game being decent, we get burned for it. It happened with Shadow, it happened with Sonic 06, and I'm fairly confident that it'll happen with Unleashed.

I bet Shadow will be the black knight, Amy will be a princess, Knuckles will be the leader of the royal guard & Tails will be sonic's Squire.

(& Blaze will be some Random person burning down villages, that would be great!)

I thought the princess would be Elise or (you'll think I'm weird after this) princess sally, other than that i agree with evreything else

@kayla: That's like saying no one should ever be released from prison after they've commited a crime because all they'll do is commit more crimes.

Now if you've hated past games, I'm all for expressing those opinions. (And just for the record, I liked Heroes, liked Shadow, and was so frustrated by '06 I couldn't finish it.) But how could I or anyone condemn a game after only seeing one magazine article with a few screenshots?
