I've plaved most of the Sonic games, and thusfar my fav is SoTH2 for Genesis. But I've heard Sonic CD for the Sega CD is the best of all of them. Is this true? ( I don't own a Sega CD so I don't know).
Not really.
Its good but flawed. The Spin Dash and Super Peel Out aren't as instant as in Sonic 2. (Spin Dash anyway) And my personal opinion is that the levels are too short yet with much to explore.
Yea SCD is still my incomplete project. I've discovered S3&K to the very last bit of programming they put into that wonderful gem of a game...and Sonic 2 as well[not to the extent of S3&K though]. Sonic 1...i've got a lot left to play and Sonic CD, a TON more to play through. The music and levels are astounding in the game[excluding wacky workbench...like for real, what the hell? lol] I really need to spend like a year or so on it like I did with S3&K to fully appreciate all it has to offer. Like JT said...the Spin Dash is different then the S2 one, but that Super Peel Out...a great move I wish Sonic still had.
Ah, Sonic CD - great game, even if the Super Peel-Out had absolutely no functional use.
It is, if nothing else, uniquely charming, which probably accounts for much of why it holds such esteem among the fans. It was, if you will, the "lost game" of the franchise when it was still at the height of its acclaim. It had an interesting premise in time travel, a more fleshed-out storyline, terrific music, and really struck an innovative balance between speed and exploration. Yes, you could speed run it the whole way through without stopping, or you could take your time and explore the stages to locate the robot capsules and get the good ending. It was innovative and creative; it wasn't until I was told that I noticed that in the present and future variants of stages, some robots are slightly broken down and are not as dangerous, and a little thing like that goes to show the eye for detail that Naoto Oshima had.
If I had to think of any particular failing of the game (apart from everything related to Wacky Workbench), I suppose it was that the final boss was anticlimactic. Pogo Stick Robotnik? Ooh, how terrifying! And those Special Stages get downright obnoxious after a while (I'm looking at you, stage with the night cityscape). It is also, somewhat tragically, short for a venture that could have offered a great deal more; too bad we may never know what the missing second round was supposed to be. However, these are minor detractions that never really seem to take away too much from the overall game. Sonic CD was intensely atmospheric, whether being watched by a giant Robotnik statue in the middle of Stardust Speedway or running through the marvellous paradise of the good future in Metallic Madness, and will probably continue to be held up as one of the better paradigms of the series.
To end this post, I won't comment on the war of the soundtracks, but I'll leave you instead with this: before Sega wanted the King of Pop for Sonic 3, they consulted a "prince" for Sonic CD.
Hmm... I'm intrigued. I'll have to see if I can snag a Sega CD for cheap somewhere. It'll compliment my 32X nicely 0_o. On that note, there was a Sonic game for the 32X( I think it was a Knuckles game, actually). Any advice on that? P.S. Great vid Rapidfire^_^
Knuckles' Chaotix on the 32X is a really unusual game. It's got a partner mechanic where you control two characters which is very elastic and hard to get used to at first. That being said it's a personal favorite of mine. It's got a unique feel to it, great graphics, and the 3D special stages are a ton of fun to play. It doesn't have the reputation that the Genesis and CD games have, but I prefer it over Sonic CD. It's just a lot more fun.

Kewl! thanks for the advice, guys! ^_^
Yea MPrower, no doubt. You're welcome! You know Sonic CD is on Gamecube for Sonic Gems Collection. I'd pick that up man.
Will do, HyperSonic2003! Alas, shed a tear for my 32X, for he shall forever be without his fellow frivolous peripheral, the Sega CD.
But what about all those great 32X-CD games? (sarcasm)

Sonic CD is tight, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still the best Sonic game of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Um, what's "best" is an opinion. What's true to one will not be true to another. There are people out there who actually think Sonic the Hedgehog 06 is one of Sonic's greatest adventures, and I wish I was kidding.
Anyways, to me, the combination of Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles, is the zenith of Sonic's legacy.

Yup, the inclusion of the Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic made it SHEER EPICNESS.
S3&K and Sonic 2 compete as the best Sonic games. Sonic 1 and Sonic CD compete for 3rd.
Sonic CD has a lot of cool things about it, like time travel gameplay, unique bosses, and animated cutscenes that are probably the best Sonic animation ever.
The main reasons that it does not compete with S3&K and Sonic 2 are:
* Its zones are not very original. Most of them are clones of Sonic 1 zones, other than Wacky Workbench and Quartz Quadrant, and those are probably the least fun zones in the game. However Stardust Speedway is amazing in every way, arguably the best overall Sonic zone, especially considering the boss. I often say that Sonic is not about speed, but Stardust Speedway has everything that makes Sonic great, plus speed. It is an incredibly intricate zone while also being one of the most psychedelic.
* The zone art, other than Collision Chaos present and Stardust Speedway, is not quite up to the standards of the other Sonic mega drive games.
* It is kind of a short game compared to S3&K and Sonic 2, especially considering that it has CD storage. There are 4 versions of most levels, but they are quite similar.
* The platforming has a rather blocky feel to it, rather than the smooth momentum generation of the mega drive games.
