I don't have the game right in front of me, so forgive me if I'm mistaken on this advice...

Make sure your controller is set up properly. The sound test code was probably written for the original SegaCD controller, and B on that controller doesn't necessarily correspond with B on yours. You know how you can map out the controller? Make sure you're hitting the right button.

But this is generic advice. I've never used the Sound Test code on Sonic CD and I've only rented Gems Collection.

I tried A as well (Plus the Gems collection uses the PC version)

Having Gems (JPN version, naturally - yes, I'm still pimping that fact), let's put it this way. You're supposed to flick the stick. Holding it there too long can cause it to count as two separate instances of that direction, invalidating your code - and we don't want that, do we?

Admittedly, I remember hearing this was a big problem with Gems' version of CD. At least, GameFAQs wouldn't shut up about it when the game was new.

that explains when I moved the stick the "Press Start" went quicker.

Gems collection used the Mega CD version, not the PC version, it would be harder to convert the PC version with it's radically different controller, and the console and Mega CD versions were almost identical (from what I've heard the Console one was better, though that was one review).

On the screen when Press Start is still flashing, quickly hit down down down, left, and right in that order (the D-pad works much better than the stick) and then hold A until the screen fades to black. If it doesn't work, go into the Time Attack area, and back out into the main screen and try again. It should work.

And you're wrong. It's the PC version, alright, for various reasons:
[list=1]

  • Altered Play Music and music placement (ie: in the version with the Japanese soundtrack, Metal Sonic's race does NOT play Stardust Speedway BF regardless of time period, Time Attack plays "Little Planet" instead of the Title Screen music, and "Boss Battle" is NOT listed in Play Music while "Final Fight" is), that stems directly from the PC version's usage of the US soundtrack exclusively
  • Low quality sound effects ripped from the PC version, back when PC sound effects generally were of low quality
  • Sound Test doesn't list a separate kind of music type for Past music like the Sega/Mega CD versions do
  • If the Sega/Mega CD version was used (ie: emulation), transparencies and palette changes would be trivial while they are noticably missing in Gems
  • "Exit" option that wasn't on Sega/Mega CD version but was on PC version
  • Version of Sonic R included in Gems was also PC version[/list:o:2ffb9ee0a4]Seriously, all signs point AWAY from the Sega/Mega CD version, suffice to say. Radically different controllers aren't an issue; just map actions to buttons on a controller. Easy.
  • And why differentiate "console" and "Sega CD"? Methinks you meant "computer", not "console".

    Hate to bump, but I have a problem with Gems' Sonic CD's debug mode, too. You can go into and out of debug (B) and you can switch the viewable objects (A) but you can't seem to set anything down like normal debug. Does anyone know what's wrong with that?

    They didn't map the keyboard to the controller properly - you can't place items during debug.
