"Elias... ALL the past tracks are Japan. There's no American counterpart for them."
I knew that...I meant that The JP version did a good job with "Past" tracks - but their other songs weren't as intereting to listen to.
I dunno, this is a topic that nobody can win cuz everyone has a different taste in music <shrug>
Srry if I wasn't clear =(

Absolutely...I just wanted to defend the American music against some of the over-aggressive criticism it's received from the more Japanophilic Sonic fans out there. And if it inspires some constructive debate, then all the better.
Categorising people as "Japanophillic" isn't really fair, especially as the Region 1 fans who bought the Mega CD version will just be defending their region, rather than a foriegn version.
Though, I'll be honest enough to say that I don't like most American Sonic stuff, besides Sonic Spinball, the ST games that Naka made in Frisco and the Virtual Sonic CD which had some of the best Sonic CD US and Spinball tracks in a more CD format.
"Return to Toxic Caves" is like the most badass track ever, Sonic games NEED more bass guitar...
Anywho, that's enough off topic rambling from me. Perhaps we should make a soundtrack hurt/heal game.
OK, I apologise about the Japanophilic dig...
The American Sonic CD music is fine on its own, but the problem is that Sega of America is trying to keep people from playing the game with the original soundtrack. Heck, didn't they create more confusion when the Europe version of Gems Collection had the American soundtrack when originally the they had the Japaneese one? And ain't both versions of the tracks on the Gems CD anyway but they wouldn't let you play the other one on regional systems?
To be fair, though, the Gems thing was a license thing, it was probably the cheaper option to use the normal soundtrack. Given that it was the PC version, it would require reaquiring the rights to insert the Japanese music. Obviously this was neccesary in Japan, as that's the only soundtrack they have known. The PC version (which was ported) is US soundtrack in all regions.
What I take issue with in Gems is the Sega of Europe's refusal to update the games for PAL use, to restore the correct soundtracks, use the UK manuals instead of US or recover Streets of Rage, instead they release the US version.
I hate Sega of Europe.
I 100% agree with the Streets of Rage thing. Absolutely agree. But I'm not complaining about the soundtrack issues, it gave me and the countless others the opportunity to play the game with the American soundtrack. Let the genius of Spencer Nilsen rule o'er all!
(OK, so I'm pushing my luck now...)
So, Craig, which American tracks do you like the best? Which ones do you think suited the level the most?
