SEGA AND BIOWARE COLLABORATE ON NEW SONIC ROLE PLAYING GAME FOR THE NINTENDO DS
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (Thurs 21st June 2007) -- SEGA Europe, Ltd., SEGA of America, Inc. and Canada-based developer studio BioWare Corp. today announced a partnership to create a new video game based on the classic SEGA flagship icon, Sonic The Hedgehog. The exact name of the game is undetermined, but this new title developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS will ship in 2008.
BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world, said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages.
BioWare is the award-winning independent developer that has created some of the world's best-selling titles including the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series, the 2003 Game of the Year, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the 2005 RPG of the Year, Jade Empire. BioWare is currently developing one of the most anticipated next-generation titles of 2007, Mass Effect.
Were thrilled to be working with SEGA on Sonic, one of the industrys most enduring and compelling icons, said Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, were committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the characters broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure, added Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer of BioWare.
The relationship with BioWare reinforces SEGAs increased emphasis on Western content development for Western audiences. In the past few years SEGA has announced partnerships with developers Bizarre Creations, Gas Powered Games, Monolith Productions, Obsidian Entertainment, Planet Moon Studios, Pseudo Interactive and Silicon Knights. SEGA has also acquired development studios The Creative Assembly, Secret Level and Sports Interactive.
I have this feeling...
It... it feels like my brain wants to kill itself.
Um...okay. I really didn't expect this. However i really don't know if it is such a good idea. Still if anyone can pull it off Bioware can!
Well, this is new...in more ways than one, too. It's...promising, I guess? Yeah...promising...Too many ellipses.
The exact same text is now on BioWare's own site, for anyone who wants an actual source.
Needless to say, we need more info.
I'm excited by the possibilities. =D
This sounds like a good chance to get all the old characters into NPC roles and such. But they probably won't do that. 🙁 I don't think turn based battles would work, maybe a real-time battle system would work. BAttles could be similar to Sonic Battle? That might work.
But seriously, does Sega of Japan ever make games any more? Sega of America cannot be trusted.
Wow. This is kinda freaky considering this topic was just created less than a week ago...
But yeah, more info is needed.
'Kay, now, Acid, this isn't the SPA. No Rickrolling.
At least we are finally getting a Sonic RPG. And since Sonic Team's not developing, this game already has a 50% chance of actually getting higher than a 6! That was my topic by the way.

Aww...I didn't know that rickroll has been overdone here already. My bad.
Well this surprise.
A handheld Sonic game made by people who aren't Sonic Team?
Sure fire winner.
This could go so many ways. I'm not really sure how to feel, quite honestly. I'll wait for more info.
Oh brother.
Here's hoping for a storyline on Sonic Battle levels of goodness.
Bioware, the makers of HUGE RPG's like Bualders Gate, KOTOR, and Jade Empire are doing an RPG starring Sonic?!!
"Urinates pants. Passes out."
*expects people to be complaining about it a week later*
Figures. I don't have a DS. >_>
If it is made by Bioware then it is a given that it will have a major plot twist towards the end of the game. Hey it is only natural afterall! I still don't think it's a good idea, but the more I think about it the more I can see how promiseing this game might actually be! Considering it was just announced it might be some time before we actually hear or see anything solid out of this puppy!
Sonic has returned. This game will definitely be AAA. Why? Because it's Bioware. I think this is the best Sonic-related announcement in a long time, and I'm REALLY looking forward to the plot, for once.
Mario, watch out. Sonic is here to be your rival again, but in a completely different way =P
Perfect name for the game: RINGDOM HEARTS.
I thank you.
Not sure about the game really. The game probably wont be terrible, because Bioware know how to make RPGs, but I can't help thinking: Why?
Hahaha nice one JT. Yea, I can't help but think the same as well.
maybe it'll have a "Create your own character" feature.
Sonic + RPG = Scary concept
BioWare + RPG = Heaven
...I don't know what to think! ;.;
Hopefully this will be good for the sake of those with a DS.
So according to Robo's equation here...Sonic + RPG + BioWare = a place between heaven and hell. Hmm..
Purgatory?
Sonic + BioWare + RPG = Scary concept from Heaven?!
Possible title: Final Fantasy Rings
It doesn't get more random than that.
I hope this game won't go bad reviews fom the "Sonic-is-speed" people. It be cool if you could already established game areas(Station Square, South Island etc.)
Well if it does have a "create your own character" type deal. People will complain when they can't recreate their Badgicorn hybrid with rainbow stripes fancharacter named Lupe.
Holy. Socks.
This is promising, to say the least. I wonder if this'll finally bring with it a return for Mighty, even if it's only an NPC cameo.
God, I really hope that there isn't any "create-your-own-furry" mode. I want to play as Sonic, not "Zipperflash the Hedgehog" with Sonic as the sidekick.
Oh, wow. Completely blown away by news of this.
This can mean anything, like that the Sonic franchise might be finally getting back on track (i.e. Sonic & Mario, Sonic Rush Adventure, and now this), or...
It's the end of the world as we know it.
And I feel fine.
Confirmed to introduce another 100 characters

I'll color the Sonic franchise back on track when I see a 3D console Sonic that's actually good and gets positive reviews and strong sales. I'd trade in all 2D GBA, DS, and PSP Sonics for just one high-quality 3D Sonic. Sadly, with the moratorium Jeffrey issued on console Sonics, that doesn't look to happen anytime soon. So without that, I guess I'll have to settle for this title and SRA. I'm not complaining, just stating a preference.
Well then I know I want it have branches where you make decisions. Isn't Bioware well known for that gimmick?
it should have a card-based battle system that sets up for the sequel to Sonic Shuffle
Fact:
Sonic Rpg in development
Fact:
Sonic Team's not developing it
Well, I like the handheld Sonics we've been getting excluding SAdv2, Genesis, and SAdv3. Another one on DS would keep me happy. I just don't why Sega decided to call it Sonic Rush Adventure, when it has nothing to do with Sonic Rush's storyline.
Al Bundy sums up my feeling also.
It's so odd that Sega approached Bioware for a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG of all things. It's like the equivilant of Todd Solondz directing a feel-good, Disney comedy film for the whole family. I can't help that it's sort of a missed opportunity for other Sega franchises that better fits into Bioware's mold such as Panzer Dragoon. I mean a new PD RPG from Bioware would be swell.
Originally, I would have liked Vanillaware to try their hand on a Sonic game(maybe even an RPG). This thought however came into effect before actually playing Odin Sphere. Now after playing it...eh...
But ah well, we will see this E3.
Best part about this game? It's being Made In Canada!
Time to break out the beer for Sonic...we'll make him comfortable and get him nice and liquored up! ">
You know...this makes me wonder if other sorts of future Sonic titles could possibly land in the hands of Bioware...maybe a 3D console platformer...hmmm...just floating the idea...
I don't know what to expect, since I've never played any of Bioware's games. But the thing we have to be glad about here is that it's not being made by Sonic Team, which raises the threat level from hopeless to cautiously optimistic.

Isn't that what Kingdom Hearts is about (sans the "create-your-own-character" part).
Btw, Al Bundy echoes my desire as well, although a demo might change my mind.
Yeah in Kingdom Hearts you play your "self-insertion/androgenous character Sora" on a romp through your disney fantasies. Which basically play out as the movie but with Sora, Donald, and Goofy tagging along. So its like a fanfiction story only nobody seems to mind this.
I'm.....I dunno what I am anymore. o.o
Why is a Sonic RPG so surprising? Every mascot franchise has had one except Sonic until this point.

Crash Bandicoot had an RPG? I must have missed that.
no he didnt actually. But Ratchet and Clank and Spyro the Dragon had games with RPG ELEMENTS in them. I don't know if that counts though.
