Sonic Game Gear thread.
I honestly feel like the line of Game Gear games are severely underrated by the majority of the fanbase. If I'm being honest, I don't dislike a single one of them. Yes, even Sonic Labyrinth and Sonic Blast (I still hold that Sonic Blast is an amazing game, haters gonna hate, etc.). Tails Adventures is a bona fide classic in my eyes, on par with the Genesis games in terms of just how much fun it is (Tails + Puzzle/Platformer just feels right for whatever reason).
Also, controversial opinion time kiddies!
The entire line of Game Gear Sonic's > All Sonic games since Sonic Heroes.
Do not delude yourselves, search your feelings, you know it to be true.
I love Chaos and Triple Trouble myself.
Sunset Part Act 3 is one of my absolute favorite tracks.
*echoes Sailor*
Except in my case I prefer Chaos on Master System - the theme tunes to Aqua Planet and whichever level had the giant pogo stick things were better on the MS. I can't get behind their GG equivalents.
Also, Game Gear / MS Sonic was actually harder than the MegaDrive equivalents (at least until Chaos) - what do you mean I can't pick up the rings I just lost? What do you mean I have to face every boss with no rings whatsoever? And how the heck do I control that hang-glider?!

Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble were titles that deserved Genesis ports.

I agree, but I think Tails Adventure is almost in a league of it's own. But I also like Sonic Blast
The level design in them doesn't come close to the Genesis games, but I still enjoy playing them. I'd still say that I would prefer them with the Master System aspect ratio, but with Game Gear music and color pallet as the definitive way to play them. Which is legally impossible! Boo.
The music in the 8-bits games were pretty fantastic and can hold their own to the 16-bit tracks, i'd say. Triple Trouble's music isn't quite as good though, if only because the games proceeding them didn't have varying degrees of quality (Meta Junglira, Great Turquoise, the special stage theme, and the final boss theme are all pretty forgettable). But it has Sunset Park act 3, which rounds it out a bit.
The Drift games are, well... I wouldn't call them bad games. They are just really weird. That, and they don't hold my attention for very long. I'd say the same goes to Tails' Skypatrol, but the learning curve in the game is just gosh darn infuriatingly difficult to enjoy it after the second level.
Blast, Labyrinth, and Spinball are all terrible, though. Hukos shall forever have bad taste.
edit: There's a word filter on a word that isn't even considered derogatory?
Sonic Blast is just 2deep4u bro
I dunno, I like platformers like Sonic Blast where you have to be a bit more precise and SB feels like that.
I do not dislike any of the GG games. I approve of this thread!
Mob knows what's up
Sonic 2 on the GG and Master System was badass...if you fail to agree, you're a filthy Casual!
Sonic 2 GG version. Ah, what memories. This game has to have the most difficult first boss of any Sonic game ever created. I hated it with a passion! Great game otherwise though.

/v/ called, they want their meme back.
Tell 'em I called, and that they can stuff themselves! 😛

I'm going to be the lone dissenter and say that I did NOT like the Game Gear Sonic games. Not that I blame the games themselves, noooo... the GG itself was at fault. A tiny screen w/ too much ghosting going on, a bulky frame that made playing on it for more than a half-hour a chore... if the batteries even LASTED that long!
But I played Sonic 1 on the Master System once, long ago, and loved it.
Perhaps we should rename this to Sonic 8-bit thread?
Anyway, I echo the appreciation for the main games (Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Chaos, Triple Trouble) - all of them are brilliant, and Sonic 1 and 2 are as noted tremendously hardcore, what with the no-ring boss fights. And Sonic 2's first boss? Screw him, OK? And that sodding pipe maze from Scrambled Egg Act 2 can bugger off as well, as can the freaking pipe maze of doom that is Sonic Chaos's final special stage.
Ah, I say that about them but at the same time that's what made these games truly spectacular was their difficulty. And they all had aspects of them that you didn't see in their 16-bit counterparts. Sonic 1's Jungle Zone for example, with its dastardly rolling logs, and the giant waterfall from Act 2. Heck, even before that, Bridge Zone Act 2 with its constantly advancing screen border of death.
Oh also. GREEN HILLS ZONE'S BOSS IN SONIC 2. WHAT THE HELL WAS WITH THAT. I can only imagine how utterly horrific that level must have been on the Game Gear, because it was bad enough on the Master System judging the distances for those gaps. Yet it was all this kind of dickery that made the games challenging, because it was done in a way that you didn't feel cheated so much as you felt that your skills needed honed.
Highly honourable mention to the music in all these games as well. Anyone who hears Jungle Zone's music from Sonic 1 and does NOT feel the urge to bob their head along to it or whatever is not human. I've also always preferred 8-bit Scrap Brain's music to 16-bit, and Labyrinth is tied between the two as well. As for Sonic 2, almost its entire soundtrack is worth mentioning. Must also mention an interesting fact here, the Master System version of Sonic 2 has a totally different boss track to the Game Gear version - one I prefer, to be honest.
But yes, Sonic 2's Sky High Zone, Aqua Lake Zone, Green Hills Zone, Gimmick Mountain Zone and Scrambled Egg Zone all have fantastic music. Underground Zone's music is forgettable, and Crystal Egg Zone's music can grate on you after a while. I'm with Darkwing on the MS version of the Sonic Chaos soundtrack as well. Gigalopolis Zone's music in the Master System version is a lot more likeable IMO than the GG version. Same goes for the other zones with variations between versions - Sleeping Egg, Aqua Planet and so forth. I also have to say I love the boss music in Sonic Chaos.
Heck, I could go on all day about these games, as they were my childhood. But I'll stop blathering for now as I should get some sleep XD
Scrambled Egg and Underground Zone Act 3 gave me so many fits.
I could listen to the music of Sonic Chaos and Triple Trouble all day long.
It really amazed me because, in Gigaopolis Zone, the transition between the Invincibility music and the main BGM was so flawless. I do have to say though, Chaos's final boss music was rather creepy with the pseudo-violins preceding the boss music. I believe it was a remix of the normal boss music from Sonic 2.
Sonic 2 is the only main-line game that doesn't start off with a tropical level, isn't it?
Sonic Advance 3 and Shadow the Hedgehog.

AAAAAARGH! I had been happily repressing those pipe mazes of doom! The horror, the horror!

THERE IS NO ESCAPE. NOT FROM THE PIPE MAZES OR THE MEMORY OF THEM.
On the subject of hard bosses, for those of you who have trouble on Underground Zone's boss in the game gear version of Sonic 2, here's a tip that makes it infinitely easier.
Now lets take a look at the battlefield to get you ready.
What? Don't tell me that your repressed memory has already sent you to hide in a corner? (okay, so it's a screenshot of the Master System version, but it'll do for the demonstration)
Well, you know that the object of this boss is too avoid the boulder as they come falling down in predetermined different loops so that they hit the anttrap instead. Some come in more smaller arcs and are easier to avoid, but what about the larger ones? Well, if you adjust your position to fit yourself like so...
...right there on the red area. The black line represents the arc of the floor where it is too steep to stand on further more back; basically you're standing near the edge of that curve on the ground. Now, to dodge the boulder you can easily do them like so...
You jump and make a curve slightly backwards, avoiding the boulder so that it can hit the anttrap instead while repositioning yourself right back into the "sweet spot" again. Do this, uh, however many times the boulders come down until Robotnik swoops for a last minute kill and dodge him as well to finish this boss.
You have know completed one of the biggest roadblocks from finishing this game so that you can continue to torment yourself know the rest of what this game has to offer and finally complete it in all it's glory.
Also, rank the music!

Tiers are for hipsters! 😛
Those tiers are horribly wrong. Sorry. 😛
How is the Jungle theme so far down??
Green Hills Zone's theme exists purely so I can sing You Can Do Anything over the top Assuming I'm thinking of the right level, of course. Mecha Green Hill Zone's theme exists purely so I can *want* to sing that song over the top, but it doesn't quite work...

Sonic Boom > You can do anything
real talk
Simply No. =D
I cannot begin to describe how much I love Sonic 1 on the Master System.
I simply CANNOT.
Nostalgia be damned, most favourite Sonic game ever.
Simply No. =D
Maybe you didn't hear me.

I DENY you your real talk! :3
Those tiers are horribly wrong. Sorry. 😛
Well, I don't see you making one. 😛
How is the Jungle theme so far down??
It's not so much that it's bad or anything, but there is
just some much there that is of high quality I had to fit it in
somewhere. 😛 It's a great tune, but there are others that beat it for me.
Sonic Boom > You can do anything
real talk
While I really like Green Hills and the remixed Mecha Green Hill, you can easily tell that I really enjoy that tune, but You Can Do Anything never did it for me at all and I find it really off putting. Sonic Boom easily beats it.
you just don't do that bro
you just don't do that
that's totally unchill bro
Sonic 2's first boss can also easily be beaten by finding a certain spot on the hill and just standing there, for the entire fight, apart from when you have to jump over Robotnik.
The worst part of Sonic 2 though was not its bosses (save perhaps Green Hills and the final boss). No, the WORST part was collecting the Chaos Emeralds. Exhibit A, Sky High's Emerald. It's possible to collect without using the hang-glider, thankfully, but it's still a pain. Exhibit B, Aqua Lake's, hidden in a dreaded pipe maze. However, by far and away the worst offender is Exhibit C, Gimmick Mountain's Emerald - hidden THROUGH A FLIPPING WALL which you have no means of realising is actually not really a wall but a passage apart from by sheer luck!
