I'd almost want a port of Sonic Schoolhouse before they port Ecco...they can just include all the old Ecco games on the next Ecco game...

Ecco should be on this collection. It's almost frightening.

it is the most educational game on the genesis and when kids buy educational games they learn have fun and don't become violent and throw boulders at me like the kids from school who said that crying is not cool because sonic told them to and i know if they have ecco on the gem collection that people will play that instead of sonic and learn that violence isn't good and that blood and hitting shouldn't be allowed in e rated games because it's not good for children to see green blood spilling out of a giant pig shot with light arrows!

...because Japan gets Vectorman as well!

I feel glad I'm planning on importing this whenever I get the money. It's official - Sega hasn't altered what's in the collection so much as removed things from the collection to appease little Billy over there. We get no compensation for the loss whatsoever. Screw little Billy - anyone with any sense can see that Japan's getting a better deal than us. As I said, I'm importing, for the first time in, well, ever. At least it's a nice precursor to Saturn imports.

I still hope, against hope, that this doesn't affect the PAL version, otherwise I'll cry myself to sleep every night.

I've already pre-ordered ;.;

The way this is going SOJ will announce that they'll just stick every sega mega drive /genesis game that was made by sega in this collection.

Perhaps like the mega collection they could have differences depending upon what frequency you play the game in, i.e in the pal version when you select 50Hz yer get Sonic 1 Version 1 and Sonic 3d flickies island and in 60hz yer get sonic 1 version 3 and Sonic 3d Blast.

I pre-ordered the Japanese vesion this morning, I was really only wanting this Collection for Sonic the Fighters, but Bare Knuckle 3 really sold me on it. I have the crap PAL port of Streets of Rage 3 and I could do with something better. :D

Is that I wanna see the Sonic CD in Gems PAL version come with the Japanese Soundtrack...Oo

Because that's my fave version...buuuut it usually works out that we wind up with the american versions tweaked into the PAL Region 90% of the time.

Ho hum, I'm sure I'll be happy either way...Oo;

We know that the American version is getting the American soundtrack only, and that the Japanese version is getting the Japanese soundtrack, but does anyone have any idea if the Japanese version is going to have the American soundtrack as well?

We don't know yet. Hopefully it will include both. Laziness is the only reason I can see for both soundtracks not being included in the Japanese version.

If you can understand Japanese, the ad's actually quite funny. The main part says "run! run! fight!" twice, and at the end it says "fight, fight - who?" as Streets of Rage comes onto the screen. :p

ETA: Gamespy has an interview with the director of Sonic Team, and a few interesting points came about:

- Sonic CD soundtracks are specific to their region - ie, America only has the Amerian, Japan only has the Japanese. Interestingly enough they claim this is because of space issues, not licensing.
- They've attempted to port NiGHTS and it hasn't worked. Sounds like they're going to wait till the next-gen consoles come out and then give it another shot.
- If you read between the lines, they're pretty clearly saying that they only intended to put Sonic CD, R, and Championship on the collection (which finally puts the "32X porting problems"/"Mighty's creator drama" rumours to rest). They added that if Gems Collection does well, they'll consider releasing other games (for those playing at home, the only ones left are Chaotix, SegaSonic, Shuffle, Pocket Adventure, and Saturn 3D Blast) onto a new collection. Sounds to me like they're hoping to make a profit by leaving the less famous/desired/quality titles for another possible collection. Still pretty good news, though.

No, pretty good news would be that KC will be in a compliation early next year, excellent news would be that Chaotix is a super-secret unlockable in Gems, but this.. this is so-so news IMHO anyway because the key word here is "if". To me, that means IF Gems is not popular, we may never be able to play KC or SegaSonic.

That's contradicting. If it's region specific, then PAL would have the original soundtrack, but you say "Japan only has the Japanese" (aswell as America only having American)

I'm not sure wether you're confirming or denying the fear of every PAL gamer.

Though I am VERY happy to hear about a "Museum" with soundtrack remixes in it :)

Ah, Craig, I didn't mean that Japan is the only country that gets the Japanese soundtrack, I meant that the only soundtrack the Japanese version has is the Japanese soundtrack. I have no idea what soundtrack Europe's gonna get, there's been little-to-no info on anything but the American and Japanese versions so far.

I want to know how they can have room for remix music, but not room for the other CD soundtrack...

If they're region specific then Europe will get the japanese soundtrack. Or at least if when it said they were going to be region specific in your post was true.

Thanks for the article, Matt. I still plan on importing this game though. And I still can't believe they kept SOR out just because of rating issues. In other words, a game that was around for current gamers like myself when we were in grade school is now too violent for the children of society today who will undoubtedly find the code to unlock the secret sex game.

I call BS on the "space requirement" argument of Sonic CD's soundtracks.

And it's painfully obvious that SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Chaotix, Sonic Pocket Adventure etc were left off so that they could release a third collection should this second one sell.

^NiGHTs, Sonic Jam, Virtua Fighter 2 (the FUN one), Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, a fairly decent game library.

Sonic the Fighters (Championship) was never released for the Saturn. There was a planned Saturn release, but it was cancelled. As of now, this is the first time the game has ever been ported to home consoles with Gems Collection.

In Fighters Megamix, both Bean and Bark from Fighters were unlockable characters, along with two stages from Fighters, South Island and Aurora Icefield.

It was a seasonal sampler thing. In Japan it was included with a Saturn holiday bundle, and in the US it was given away with certain games. I remember I actually picked mine up for $5 at BlockBuster. The 3D Sonic game alone was worth it.

My mother loved the version of Jingle Bells it played. Plus, since it had a score system, it was very re-playable.

God I miss Nights. I wished they'd make another soon.

I forgot to mention my favorite thing on the Christmas Nights game: the acappella version of Dreams Dreams by Boys II Men, which played during the credits. I still listen to that every now and then.

Wikipedia says that Yuji Nake had no sequel planned, because the only improvement to made upon the game would be graphically.

Back on topic: Has anyone heard any leaks as to the extra stuff in Sonic Gems besides the remix of the Sonic CD soundtrack? Perhaps there will be another Sonic World like in Sonic Jam.

I know that besides music there'll be artwork and movies - presumably you have to unlock it rather than it just being there straight away - but apart from that, I haven't heard anything. I'll personally maim a whole bunch of Sega executives if the extras are different between the different country versions, though...

Well, considering the UK got the peice of turd that was Altered Beast on the PS2 along with Japan, I can only pray we get All the SoR games and Bonanza bros.

Streets of rage 1, 2 and 3 were the greatest games of my childhood along with Gunstar heroes and Sonic.

Let's hope we won't have to "play" a certain game countless times in order to unlock extras like in SMC and Plus.

It wasn't difficult, just tedious.

You know how hard it is to sit through PS2 loading times?!

I've had the game for 2 weeks SPECIFICALLY to play the proper version of Ristar, and got lazy after the first hour. So far S3&K is my only unlock :(

I think they upped it to how many hours you actually play the game, now.

So now you can just leave the game running while you go watch TV instead! 😀

I'm currently listening to tracks from the old "Sonic Remix" album that was released in Japan, that was all remixes of music from Sonic CD. I wonder if these will be included on Gems Collection as part of the bonus remixed Sonic songs.

Don't this has been posted. New video @ Sega.com. I've never really seen all that much Sonic CD footage(not like this is a bunch) but from the few seconds of gameplay i've seen...this game is flippin fast. Wow! I was gonna wait 'til like October to pick this up, but i'm not so sure now. And StF looks like a complete blast. And yes Sonic R does have improved graphics(from the Sat version atleast...never played/saw PC version). Man and only 2 weeks away too. Yay! ^____^

The end of the trailer uses the same music as the Japanese commerical posted a few days ago, this makes me glad. It's quite catchy, I hope it's the title screen music or something.

Man, I am SO importing. I have an account with Yes Asia that I've never used... perfect excuse to do so. 😀

I don't have a problem with the US soundtrack, but having a few Sonic Mega CD mp3's I got from SegaSonic.net and Dream Avenue so long ago... I gotta get this imported just because the music's just so damn good. Plus Sonic R saves to a memory card instead of the Saturn's sorry excuse of a ''back-up'' function...

Wait, come to think of it... wouldn't US memory cards spaz when saving from a Japanese disc, or would it matter? o.o

Yeah, you need a separate memory card if you're gonna import Gems, it'll screw up your saves. Not that big of a deal though, the 50-something block cards come pretty cheap these days.

Does the memory card need to be Japanese? Are we talking about GameCube here?

According to what I've read, loading a different region game with your already-used memory card in the slot will reformat it and you'll lose all your saved games.

You just need a seperate memory card, it doesn't have to be japanese.

Has anyone found and combos with the Action Replay and Sonic Gems? I would rather get that and have a second use for AR rather than buy the FreeLoader combo only to use FL with one game.

There appears to be more pictures on the Sega Europe website, which now includes screenshots of the Vectorman games.

However it is appearing to be less likly that SOR will in this collection.

I think I may have to settle for the US version due to lack of money. Either that, or I will just get the US version for lack of patience and money, and eventually import. If anyone would care to donate, you are more than welcome.

Anyone know why the US version is going to be $30 while the JPN version is $50 by itself? Or is that higher price just due to importing?
