Looky what I found while reading BK, seems that the next Sonic game will be called Sonic Generations. As to whether this is the Sonic anniversary game is yet to be seen, but seeing as how first mentions of most other Sonic games start out like this, I'm very confident that, if this isn't the anniversary game, it is an upcoming game that comes out this year! Plus, with this being the same company that Sega used to set up Free Riders and StH 4's sites, to me, it just pretty much all but confirmed.
I wonder how the title relates to the game. Could be fanservice or it could be another bad marketing gimmick (I.E. Sonic 4).
So whatever this Sonic Generations might be Sega said on Sonic Facebook page that it will be revealed this Thursday.

Oh, how hilarious it would be if a game developer looking at this topic read the last few replies and based Sonic Generations entirely on that input.
Then we get a Sonic game without Sonic, but with Knuckles. Bonus points if it becomes immensely popular and Knuckles replaces Sonic as the mascot for SEGA.

Yea announcing announcements is pretty lame. Actually technology as a whole has really taken alot away from the element of surprise in terms of new games. It's rather disappointing. But hey...this is interesting. I wonder what SEGA is planning. Will keep an eye out.
I have no belief that this game will be good, and although the games seem to be steadilly getting better lately (from review scores at least) I won't hold my breath on this one.

The Sonic Cycle is undoubtably in full swing, but Classic Sonic looks so beautiful I just don't care. I can look but not touch if it sucks, I just need this in my life.

Oh bleep I bet they're listening to those people who whined about green eyes... generations... an SA and classic team up? That's too retarded to even speculate. I'll just say a generic bad marketing gimmick.
I know too well how SEGA "listens to fans," and can usually predict how a game will be by the philosophy revealed by its early info. They're entirely about the most superficial requests, especially since Sammy took over. A bunch of them requested Shadow so we got Shadow's attempt at GTA. The Sonic cycle is basically a summary of the reactions to their attempt at a Sonic Final Fantasy, the trailers and demos of which impressed a bunch of people while horrifying me because of the design philosophy they suggested: linearity, SA-style paths over nothing, and an excessively serious and dramatic style. Sonic 4 was the worst 2D Sonic physics engine ever published, but it included copies of classic zones, badniks, and bosses. The marketing campaign was HEY GUYS WE ARE UNORIGINAL PRAISE US.
The reason I got excited about Sonic Colors by its first trailer is that it was utterly devoid of any hints of executive, marketing, or non-analytical fan meddling. Who asked for color themed aliens? Probably the developers. Bonus points for the cutesy music which probably lead to a few marketing people having a seizure, and DID lead to a bunch of non-analytical fans predicting it to be aimed at the ever terrifying 'kids.' The revelation of aliens as power ups that basically give multiple character style abilities, and thus additional depth, to Sonic was even better.
So anyway Sonic 4 had 2 schools of thought among those who didn't like it. Physics are bad, or Sonic is neo-Sonic. Guess who got listened to?
Now I won't say the game will be bad. It will be a DKC-ish team up with the ability to boost the other Sonic and probably duo moves, and that can work. But it is a bad marketing gimmick, and unfortunately another way to disguise multiple character depth and please the Sonic-only non-analyticals.
Alternatively the plot may be a time travel or dimensions thing... the strange setting they run through suggests worlds merging together or perhaps a world starting to come into existence.
Not to drag this slightly off-topic for a bit, but since this undoubtedly going to be haunting store shelves in the coming months, this thread may as well be stickied.
To say my piece about the topic at hand and probably never reply here again, it's a nice trailer, sure, but as with the past couple of titles, I'm waiting until it arrives. In the meantime, I'm not getting my hopes up, despite seeing New!Sonic and Classic!Sonic together. I decided I wasn't subjecting myself to the Sonic Cycle a long time ago.
Well, 2010 was a good year for Sonic. Sonic Colors, and All Stars Racing were both solid games. I was actually kind of hoping for a Sonic Colors 2. I really loved that game. Just wish it was longer. I guess I'm just one of the few left that hasn't completely lost hope in Sonic. I just kinda stick around through good times and bad. Here's to hoping we get another good one.
Sonic Colors DS is the best 2D Sonic game since the Genesis/CD/32x combo and arguably as good as some of them. Though it should be much longer.

I think the plot probably involves Sonic Time-traveling to the past to the Sonic 1-3&K part of his life where he was much younger and thus, looked different, like Classic Sonic.
Which might make it a kind of remake...
...maybe they're going to the past for inspiration?
But since New Sonic's there things may be different as well... if New Eggman was flung into the past, too he would design a few courses. (I hope so... it'd be really interesting to see all the old stages re-made but I still want something NEW in there.) Or him and Retro Eggman might just collaborate on everything. This old/new merging concept has so many possibilities... @_@
Like, Eggman decided to go into the past to change things and Sonic followed so there might be two different stories you have to play through before unlocking a last one. (Like with Blaze/Sonic in the Sonic Rush series.)
I hope if that's the case New Sonic will get paired with Retro Eggman and Retro Sonic gets paired with New Eggman. It'd be funny to have them cracking jokes/making comments on their past/future and I think it'd make for a fresh Character Dynamic (even though they're the same people, they've probably changed over time...).

After seeing this trailer (and seeing a 3D 90's Sonic), I can't help but wish this is where the series went, with no redesign. That being said, it doesn't mean I didn't love Adventure 1 & 2, or Colors.

Although I'd like to know what these "three defining eras" of Sonic are. I can think of the 8/16-bit era and the Dreamcast era. If they have the nerve to try to present HRH Princess Zoophilia, the Werehog et al as "defining" in any way, I'm out.

The three generations are confirmed as ~1991, ~1999 and ~2010, or Classic, Early 3D and HD eras respectively.

I'd be upset if we don't get more levels from beyond Sonic 1 for the classic era. Need some Sonic 2, 3 & K goodness.
Also, the modern Sonic levels look as boringly on the rails as usual, but I understand there's a number of fans who enjoy the modern games and so will enjoy that, although I'd definitely take a full game of just classic Sonic gameplay. Hopefully if this game's good and gets good feedback then sega might very well release a game with just the classic Sonic gameplay.
After seeing Sonic get chased by the Piranha, I'm hoping to see more of those action setpieces from the Adventures, Heroes, and even 06 games. I missed those in Unleashed and Colors.
