It's very, very strange.
When I sit and think "Which Sonic do I feel is the most Sonic-ish?", I look at all the different portrayals of the blue hedgehog-
Pre SA=No words, just kickass and defeat Robotnik
Post SA= Cool, yet cheesy blue Hedgehog
Archie= ...bad dialogue...
DiC= A witty, sarcastic hedgehog who's just tryin' to have fun
OVA= Cool, fast, a little apathetic, but a true exhibition of "cool"

There are others, but I feel these 5 are the main ones.

Anyway, whenever I look at these, I always, ALWAYS find that Sonic OVA is the best out of all of them.
I've seen the movie about six times, and, I dunno, maybe it's the VA, the scriipt, or the animation, but there's no doubt that this Sonic is my favorite version of him.

If the games tried to follow the setup of this movie, I have a feeling it'd be much, MUCH better.

What do you peoples think about it?

Not sure about the voice work, but everything else in that movie gives me the same feeling of Sonic I got from the old classic Genesis games.

I think that movie is spot-on with the "Sonicy...ness." Those anime videos that come with Sonic CD are great too -- I wish they'd take those and make a mov ... well, I guess they kinda did.

I AGREE WITH THIS 100%

As good as Sonic X and SatAM are, no Cartoon or Anime captured the joys of Sonic as much as the OVA! It combined everything we loved about Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and even threw in Metal Sonic as the bad guy!

Eggman was comical but still very evil, a perfect balance that hasn't really been seen in the recent Eggman at all!

Sonic's attitude was cool and a tad sarcastic...remember when he actually had an Attitude!? The recent Sonic we've seen post SA1 has been toned down so much he no longer has a personality...*shakes head in dissapointment*, thank god this OVA portrays Sonic as the one we all know and love!

As far as voice acting goes, the Dub is abysmal...ADV films certainly....failed completely on this one, if you live in the US, buy the DVD for the Japanese VAs, much better!
Unfortunately, if you live in the UK, the DVD only has the English Dub, as I found out the hard way!

Altogether, this OVA is still my favourite piece of Sonic Animation.
I've head that Season 3 of Sonic X is also a lot closerto the original Sonic, but I have yet to see this.

I also agree entirely, I wish they would use the OVA for inspiration when writing stories for the games.

However, I found the dub added a lot more humour to the mix, being hilariously bad as opposed to wincingly bad.

Really? I personally loved Sonic's voice.
It really had this punkish cool feeling- especcially the part-
"What? You're saying that the world isn't big enough for the both of us- and one of us as to go? Well...I agree!!"
(Best line in the movie BTW)
And I loved Tails in it. He was hilarious.

OH, and despite the poppy girlish feeling of "Look Alike", I really really like the song x3

I think Sera, the President and Eggman's voices were quite well done in the dub, actually, Sera's english voice was pretty much spot-on in capturing the personality of the Japanese VA.
Shame about the rest of em...Martin Burke...Burke by name, Burke by nature.

How the hell can you tell if the acting is better when its in a language you don't understand?

I bought the OVA the day it came out of here in the US on VHS. All I could think of was "Planet what? Why does she have a tail? What's with Knuckle's hat and the Rocky the squirrel flight? Lava flows through ice? Light and Dark worlds?" ugh

as fun as the Sonic running around blowing this up was ALL that other stuff was from so far out of left field that it was distracting for me. I did like how Sonic was pretty much an A-hole though.

You don't need to understand a language to see if an actor portrays emotions well.
I know very little greek, basic stuff really, and saw movies in greek and went to drama plays; but my lack of understanding of the content of what the characters were saying didn't change how the intonation was given and how the voice characterized the character.
Another example would be the comparison between german and greek Spongebob, hearing the characters with completely different voices (except Patrick, they always give him the doofus voice) makes you really notice how important a voice actor is, Sally's greek voice is so unfitting!:P

I went to Quebec and watched Spongebob in French.
Quite unsettling >_>

If you dont know the languge, it becomes too much of an annoyance wondering what the hell they're sayin- that you can't quite judge if the the VA is good or not.

And yes. Sonic was an A-hole. So awesome xD

Sooo the voice actor's acting isn't what determines quality, it's the tone of the actor's voice? No. Esecially in comparing between Indo-European languages (including English, Greek and German). Japanese is so different in terms of voice inflections and what-not that there is no way they can be interchanged. So we get a bunch of otaku sitting around saying "Wow, this is so much better than the dub" while actual Japanese speakers laugh at how bad the acting is.

For a voice acting, the tone of the voice is the acting. Not to mention the fact that the Japanese IDOLIZE their seiyuu.

That said, I think that the OVA is the best interpretation of Sonic aside from the early games themselves. Not that it's the highest in quality, but it's the most true to the classic "feeling" of Sonic.

Anyhow, I can't even watch the subbed version. I find the english voices charming. And the movie is extremely quotable.

Such as...

"Mistah Puh-RESIDEEEEEEENT! Can you HEEEAH MEEEEE?"

"oldmanthosethingsaredangerousSTOPRIDINGTHEM!!!"

"You might know everything I'm going to do! But that's not going to help you! Because I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't IT???????"

"He flew away? ... METAL!"

to list a few.

As far as the sub vs. dub arguement, I rather listen to tolerable voices from a language I hardly understand than to listen to obvious bad voices and acting from a language I do understand 100%.

That said, the Sonic OAV dub sucked like most ADV dubs at the time.

...actually ADV dubs still aren't that great now.

Hold on...hold on...let's get things straight, It's not like I was saying "ZOMG JAPUNEEZ VOICES R BETTR DEN ENGLISH VOICZZZ"
I only meant that for an ADV Dub (or an Anime dub in general), the Sonic OVA was pretty badly done (compared to others that came out at that time), of course that doesn't mean it didn't still have it's quotable gems, as posted above!

How the hell can you tell if the acting is better when its in a language you don't understand?

Because if I don't understand the language, I can't tell if it's bad or not ;)
Martin Burke did a very...strange job with Sonic, it sounded like a strange mix of a British accent trying to do an American accent, IMO, Jaleel white did a much better job with Sonic at the time.
Plus, Tails sounded like he had a permanent cold, which put me off quite a bit.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I wanted to say...

Hmmm...plus, Masami Kikuchi = Keichi from Oh My Goddess, which gives him bonus points in my book! :p

You didn't like Martin Burke's Sonic?
I thought it was very cool. Jaleel definintally couldn't have come across with such dynamic voice as Burke did =P
Oh well, we all have opinions- if we were to argue about them it would be stupid and futile ^_^

And Dirk, thank you for reminding me of those quotes xD!
My favorite has GOT to be-
""You might know everything I'm going to do! But that's not going to help you! Because I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't IT???????""

oh yeah another WTF? moment was Knuckles saying he was Sonic's best friend.
Sonic OVA production team meeting: "So we're going to make an animated Sonic OVA guys..."

"Who?"

"I dunno but here's what he looks like. Also they tell me he's supposed to be fast. And here's the other chatacters, a round guy, a deformed fox, and some kind of...red...thing. Sega didn't tell us much more beyond names and what they do. So get to work."

"What about setting?"

"Yeah, and plot?"

"And what about..."

"look, look. We don't have a lot of time so just...make it up as you go along. In fact we still have art left over from that rejected Jumping Flash pilot... just use some of that..."

I still don't know about listening to it in another language. Watching Eggman in SA1 in Japanese does absolutely nothing for me, it just sounds like some silly man blabbing gibberish monotonously (Although Bristow may have just spoiled me for it).

Didn't Sonic Team have a lot of control over this movie? I remember seeing Yuji Naka's name in the credits.

Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima had direct involvement in this movie I believe.
Either way, it was directed by Naka...I think...either way, uh...YES.
(Probably more Contol over the OVA than with Sonic X, since 4Kids have some ownership over the 3rd season of Sonic X)

I'm going to sound like a total "yes-girl" here, but here goes:

Sonic's attitude was definitely cool. Especially his "I'm going to ignore Tails until he goes away or gets himself into serious trouble or possibly both. *Then* I'll do something about it and not before!"

Mind you, I also liked Sonic's characterisation in Sonic X. The whole laid-back feeling was just him, somehow. He goes where he wants to go, or can spend all day lying on a roof. He's not always around when you want him to be, but you can pretty much guarantee he'll be there when you *need* him.

Most voices in English were awful. As pointed out, those of us in the UK can't easily sample the Japanese original, especially since the R1 DVD is now out of print. One of these days, I *will* get it from eBay.

The plot was about as weird as you could get, but was still cool, providing you go with the flow. The whole soundtrack rocks, never mind "Look Alike"; and it pains me that I can't find it anywhere (other than "Look Alike"). Metal Sonic rocked. Why did Knux have a hat? Anyone's guess. Maybe he'd been watching Indiana Jones...

As much as I love the Sonic X Sonic, I still feel that the OVA Sonic has the surperior personality, and to me it matches more with the original style of Sonic back in the 90s!

The main reason I loved the OVA was because it actually had game references in it. We saw a spring, spike traps, Buzzbombers, and a Caterkiller. We even got to see one of those snail Badniks from Sonic CD. The only thing that was missing was a Motora.

I really did love this movie, even though when I first heard Tails's voice, I thought he had a cold. He was cute when he got scared by the thunder and lightning, though.

LOL! I saw that Part where Tails, Knuckles and Sera crashed on the ground and Tails was getting a eye full of Sera uh, CHEST. It was on YouTube.

Knuckles: Tails!

Tails:IMSOSORRY!

Knuckles: I never thought you stoop that low!

I LOL. I never saw the full movic. Last time I saw it, it on Wallmart.com on DVD.

But did'et it have some inmature yet funny moments? Like Tails looking down Sera shirt and Sonic Flipping the bird and Eggman wanting to marry Sera?

Oh yeah, there was soo many hilarious moments in the movie.
Those are the kinda movies I like-
Scary, life-or-death plots, but filled with random humor of all sorts x3 (Shanghai Noon FTW)

I actually didn't understand the part where Tails was starin' at Sera's boobs the first time. I just thought Knux was givin' Tails a hard time!
