Seriously, I really don't see what people's affection to Metal is; sure, he has a cool design but I don't think he's that special. And I do like Shadow better than Metal. <.< >.> What?
I like Metal Sonic, but not to the extent where I think a game will be better if he's just randomly thrown in. Plus it amuses me to no end when we're trying to guess which characters will be in a game and everyone is all "OMGZ METUL SONIC PLZ"
I keep barracking for Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll myself. C'mon, Sega, Metal Sonic isn't the only metallic lookalike you got!

The icon inbetween Blaze and Eggman looks like Silver{ugh no}. As 009 said, he's in{UGH NO}. it's impossible to get a good screenshot of him, though.

Here's where it gets interesting - the blue icon. It can't be a miscoloured Jet, as he's right there. It can't be Metal Sonic, as his icon would be much darker{not to mention the hair}. New character?
Characters in Riders not seen as icons in this movie: Rouge, Aiai, Ulala, robos. The weird thing in the bottom right of the above screen might be Rouge, though.

Yes they are! Or are they? Well, let's recap.
Let's take a look at this pic. Pay attention to the top most icon. A sombrero? This is possibly Samba de Amigo.
The strange Chu Chu shaped icon that I found can be seen here again (top most icon), along with a noticeable black Eggman icon.
Counting the 6 Sonic/Jet pair, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Blaze, Silver, and NiGHTS will make up 12. If we add the others here that were found, (the two robots that HSW mentioned, Billy, Chu Chu, Eggman, and Amigo will equal the eighteen.
What, no Cream? No Metal or Omega? I might be wrong somewhere, but this is as close as I can get.
Funny how Sega seems to be taking the Nintendo route and merging their smaller franchises into one main franchise - like how the Mario, Wario, and DK franchises have all merged into one for party/racing - and on a broader spectrum incorporating even more characters - fighting games.
I think merging the franchises could be really healthy for SEGA. Most of the gamers I know always bag on SEGA because SEGA only has Sonic, wereas Nintendo has Mario, DK, Starfox, Zelda, Pokemon...etc. When i mention that SEGA has other franchises all i get are sceptical glances and "huh, what's Samba de Amigo?" While hardcore gamers are probably vaugely familiar with other SEGA characters, the average person off the street probably only knows Sonic. The more character recognition SEGA can get, the better their games will sell.
Apparently, Cream is in the trailer. The Sonic Stadium says so.
I do hope the next Adventure Field or whatever just throws in a few random Sega character cameos. Ryo Hazuki would just play on the heart strings though.

The roster of Riders 2 is actually worse than Riders 1.
Silver, Billy Hatcher, and 2 more generic robots. EWWW.
BTW, the reason Silver is hated is that a. his design is ass, and b. the more they use him the more likely they are to try to acknowledge the story of S360 and use bad time travel plots.
I like to elaborate on Vec's 'b' point about Silver: the character debuted on a game which most people consider a low point of the series. As a result, he's represents Sonic 2K6 and Sega's acknowlegement of said game. That's another reason why people hate him.
Me, I don't really care about who's on the roster as I'm more annoyed that Sega invested in a Sonic Riders sequel in the first place instead of a Skies of Arcadia one. =/ Though, to be fair judging on the ugly screen caps, it looks like they aren't spending much money on this game at all.
To further elaborate on Acid's elaboration of Vec's 'b' point about Silver: it's kind of like how Axl debuted in Megaman X7, which is the worst game in the X series (imo of course). And nobody really likes Axl.

He is a Trunks wannabe
He has a body hair issue
He is slower than Big
He's being shoved on everyone, even in SSBB, despite only being in the worst Sonic game (and 2 PSP games)
He is like the worst Mary Sue fan character ever
He makes it difficult to pick who the worst Sonic character is, him or Shadow
Silver isn't well-known enough to be the de facto 'worst Sonic character' like Shadow is in the gaming community. He first needs to star in his own godawful solo game that craps on everything that made Sonic great in the first place.

Silver is crap. But on the plus side, He probably won't appear in the story because none of the extra characters appeared in the first Riders.
Also that squid on his head can't be good for aerodynamics.
Zero Gravity didn't look that bad in the trailer Ashide, Not overly stunning either. I feel your pain though Ashide, just replace Skies of Arcadia with Fighting Vipers.

Also, it may be the circle map but the tracks look shorter and more simple than the first game.
