The SEGA Carnival track is like a homage to Sega's DreamCast lineup.
Apparently there's a "Final" Story in Story Mode, but I've completed both Hero and Babylon and haven't unlocked it. Meanwhile, I'm grabbing medals in Mission Mode and trying for the other gold in the Grand Prix.
Some good stuff in the shop, but stay away from that Flying Nimbus cloud thing. It may have great stats but the handling is poor.
Knuckles owns when he's equipped with Grinder. I'm pretty much staying away from the Fly types, the Air Ride ability isn't quite as useful as one would think. Or at least that's my initial impression, maybe I should experiment a little more. Ah, who am I kidding? I can't stay away from the Speed types.
Unlocked the three special characters today, and here's the name of their gear:
Nights - Night Sky (board)
AiAi - Banana (board)
Ulala - Channel5 (board)
Plus you can ride the Hang-On and the Super Hang-On!

However, we can still hope that if he has skates as an equippable gear, then he flies like he does in his game while using them.
Not really...

Sega Illusion is too, with a scene change to ChuChu Rocket and Space Channel 5, and Samba De Amgio and Nights again.
Not really...
o.o
Are you going to give confirmation that NiGHTS does not fly "properly" no matter what gear he's equipped with or simply continue to throw oil at the idea of hope?
With skates, Nights flies "properly" as he air rides, and at level 3 when you dash he flies forward similar to Sonic's level 2 spindash. And when you run out of air, he 'flies,' which is just hovering over the ground like Metal Sonic does in Sonic Adventure DX.
So he flies... when he's flying.
Oh well, it's a partial victory, and you can see how the developers approached it, there is an internal logic there. But they just didn't realise how much we wanted what we wanted.
...
Any word on the UK release?
Ah, I see. Thankyou. ^^ Swift, you worded my thoughts perfectly. Speaking of which...
Any word on the UK release?
Play & Amazon say the 17th.
Fun game. Story was decent, not as deep as the Adventure games, but atleast the cinematics are a decent length.
So far I've unlocked everyone but: The Speed Robot, NiGHts, the other two secret characters, and I have yet to get to the last story.
I REALLY love the game, though. Metal City is a REALLY fun track. I'm working at getting 5000 rings for Eggman so that he can ride Omnipitence. (Jeez, expensive for something with such horrible stats, I guess being able to use all the shortcuts is a lil' cheap, though...)
So far the most fun combination I have is: Knuckles/Storm on the Flying Carpet. And Eggman is NUTS. He consumes air like crazy but he goes SO fast. Unfortunately it's very easy to run out of air.
Now to look up an FAQ for how to unlock NiGhts and co. and the last story.
You beat all the missions, and there is no Last Story.
Ah. Yeah, I found that out.
Jeez, it's gonna take me forever to beat all those missions, though...
You don't have to do it well, unless it's Super Sonic you're specifically after.
Well, this sucks. =/
Apparently, we (Australia) won't get ours until the 23rd, which just so happens to be our XBox launching day. That's gonna put down a lotta sales for the game.
I know, but I can barely beat the last Storm Mission (Stupid statues). I doubt I'm gonna be able to get a gold on both Grand Prix cups to even unlock Jet's missions.
Eh, it is more or less I expected though this game is getting a lot of professional reviews stating that it is a pretty average game. Eh doesn't seem like it is worth purchasing, maybe worth a rental, but it is not really a high priority rental for me either.
This sort of makes me a bit more nervous for Sonic 2006. =/
Still the unlockables are admitably cool.
I wouldn't worry about it. This is probably a game that is hated by the 'professionals' and loved by the masses.
The guy who reviewed Sonic Riders on IGN was a Mario fanatic.

Fixed.
Also, everyone must be a Mario fanatic since his games usually rate higher than Sonic's amoung game jounalists...
...and apparently the masses based on sales. =P

Okay Bunni, you got me on that fixed part.
But I only said that one IGN reviewer who still has a negative bias of Sonic, BECAUSE he was Mario fanatic. That part of the gaming era is gone.
That part of the gaming era is gone.
Wait. So I'm buying Partners in Time and waiting on the new DS title, why?
Who knows.
What about Super Princess Peach, though?
I dunno about anyone else, but *I* really liked it. And I'm not a big fan of racing games, even.
*Shrug*

I saw the ad in the tv during channel surfing and landed on Jetix.
My first reaction was very simple: WTF?

I thought Sonic V2 was refering to the "rivalry" between Mario fans vs Sonic fans not Mario's irrelevancy to this gen. If anything, the Mario franchise has been anything but, irrelevant being that it is the best selling IP in Japan and the US. I wouldn't doubt it is still the most popular gaming IP worldwide.
And Super Princess Peach is supposed to be a good game--for children. Seriously, the reports I heard was that it was pretty short and easy for more experienced gamers. But at least the US commercial was cute.
Er...back to Sonic Racers.
I've been reading a script of Sonic Riders and it seems Tails mentions a certain "Kutta-Joukowski". After a look on Wikipedia I discovered the guy really exists and is not some made up name! Nikolai Yegorovich Zhukovsky
I think there was another such reference to a real scientist in SA2, can't remember which one though. I think this is a nice little addition, don't you think?
I don't know if I'll get it. They left out Metal Sonic entirely, plus I'm not a fan of racing games. Plus, it doesen't help that they left out a certain character on an airbike that would have fit perfectly in the game.
Fit perfectly? Rouge isn't even in the storyline o_O;.
Eh, there were alot of hidden unlockable characters they could have put instead of NiGHts, Ulala and Aiai. (Chaos, Tikal, Big, Omega) Especially considering they had an imbalance with the strength/flight characters in comparison to speed.

He mentions a scientist's name (that could be it, I don't remember the exact name) after Knuckles asks how the boards can float.
It's interesting to see that his science knowledge actually happens to be something real.

From GHZ:
Quote:
Bernoulli 101: In the game, Tails explains that the ARK is the first "Bernoulli" spherical space colony. Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782) was a Swiss scientist known for his work on hydrodynamics. He developed Bernoulli's principle, which states that an increase in the speed of a fluid produces a decrease in pressure while a decrease in the speed produces an increase in pressure. Daniel was the son of Jean Bernoulli, a mathematician who, along with his brother Jacques, was known for his work on calculus.
Good to see Sonic Team is doing research again.
The lack of Tikal, Chaos, Metal Sonic et all is regretabllebut I can see why...
They want every character to be different, they al have unique attacks and ride slightly differently. If they brough more and more characters in it gets harder to make them all unique...
They dont seem to understand we don't mind some extra characters being almost exact clones who look different, IE. Timesplitters series.
If there is a Riders 2 this is a mistake I hope they rectify, next gen consoles should be able to handle ten times as many characters and tracks.
Quote:

I do.
Which is why I was concerned about the characters lacking any varing stats between them in the game. It all depends on the 'gear' which seem sort of pointless to cram a crapload of characters.
To SHADONIC: Green Gibbon later corrects himself over that in an update, but has been too lazy to actually put it on the SA2 page.
Quote:
The main problem with being stupid, from my experience, is that it makes it difficult to tell when somebody else is being stupid. Of course this opens up a whole can of philosophical worms - if everyone is stupid, but nobody realizes anyone else is stupid, what is it that makes them stupid? If there's a great cosmic standard of intellect that nobody on one isolated planet is aware of, can such a measure be applied to the microcosm in which said planet exists? And by what macrocosmic dictate is the "outer" standard of intellect greater or more viable than the one in use on the planet in question if both, indeed, have the same overall result in their respective domains? Theses have been written, I'm sure, but for our purposes, it means that I, through my ignorance, have been shamefully lead around by what can only be construed as a mistranslation in Sonic Adventure 2. In the English language dialogue and subtitles of the game, Tails identifies ARK as the "first Bernoulli spherical space colony". Bernoulli, it can be assumed, refers to Johann Bernoulli, his brother Jakob, and his offspring, who collectively formed a very prominent family of mathematicians in the late 1600's and early 1700's. To one who is stupid, such as myself, this seems a reasonable enough connection. However, my error (and presumably the error of Sega of America's translators) was recently brought to light by Pyschobob, who wrote the article "On Location with Sonic Adventure" a while back. I double checked the game in reference to Psychobob's tip, and indeed, what Tails actually says in both the original Japanese dialogue and subtitles is "Bernal" space colony. The Bernal sphere is a proposed space habitat first suggested in 1929 by Dr. John Desmond Bernal. Needless to say, this makes much more sense than Bernoulli. But alas, ignorance is not my sole evil, and I am also victim to the sin of sloth. As such, I haven't yet bothered to fix my error on the SA2 page, and probably won't until I get around to it in the cycle of the current museum overhaul (which is currently only up to Sonic & Tails). Still, being that nobody pointed out my error until now, I assume I am among others who are also stupid, so perhaps that "greater" cosmic reality is irrelevant to our microcosm of self-imposed ignorance.
And there you go.
>Which is why I was concerned about the characters lacking any varing stats between them in the game. It all depends on the 'gear' which seem sort of pointless to cram a crapload of characters.
But, how much MORE happy would people have been if there were unlockable different characters in multiplayer mode...
There are a lot of people wishing certain characters HAD been in the game, not in the story but available for the extras or whatever. They dont all need to be that different, it doesnt take up a lot of time or space, gives some people some more incentive to do the missions and just makes the colection look a lot more wholesome from a distance.
As petty as it is, there ARE people out there saying; "No big, bah, I don't think I'll buy it then."
Quote:

And they are the miniscule minority. Sonic Team could careless about them.
For every 1 person that will refuse to buy the game because it lacks their favorite Sonic character, there will be 2000+ fans who will buy it because it is a Sonic title.
As petty as it is, there ARE people out there saying; "No big, bah, I don't think I'll buy it then."
I am sadden with the lack of Big. I was surprised he wasn't just an unlockable secret character in the least, but I don't plan to not buy the game because of that. I buy it if it's a good game. Till then (and when someone drives me to the mall), I gotta finish Chain of Memories...
But I think their missing a trick by not having little extras to throw in their, just for the sake of it. Their small things and they really make the piece at least 'appear' to be slightly fuller even though, they are really, such small little extras...
That said, I dont think it harms them that they don't, but come on, it WOULD be nice to be able to ride as Tikal/Gamma/Emerl/Espio down the tracks. Even with no voice actors and attacks which mirror Cream/Robo 1/Robo 2/Sonic....
Ahh never mind, it's just a personal wish.
I'd rather see Omega than Gamma (Maybe Chaos Gamma...), but I get your point. Considering how only Eggman is unlocked after Babylon, you'd think there'd be a few more characters.

There should be a Sonic Shuffle 2 Reunion.
I actually agree with the idea of having more unlockable characters. More unlockables makes playing a game till you're (correct, and I'm from Kentucky!) a master makes all the effort seem worth it. That being said, the final things to unlock need to be gigantic, like an extra level gigantic. Mind you, I have yet to unlock Green Hill is SA2 for the sheer fact I don't feel like collecting the all A rank emblems.
This takes me back to the PS1 Spyro games. After finding and collecting everything in the game a special 100% complete level opened, a somewhat gimmicky level that had a TON of stuff to pick up. It gives you an extra ending and the satisfaction of truly mastering the game. Many franchises have something like this implemented (Crash did too, I remember freaking out my cousin when I played one of the extra levels), and I know that it works, when done correctly. Sonic being set up the way it is with emblems, things can be unlocked simply be collecting as many of them as a person can, gaining new stuff along the way.
Here's an idea, miniture time trial versions of main levels (like Rush) or levels solely created for time trials (like S3&K).
Wow... SEGA Carnival is quite a sight to behold. And now I can't wait to unlock Illusion. It's a fan's paradise track!
EDIT: Now I have Illusion. Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, NiGHTS... Heh, it's all good stuff. Long live SEGA!
EDIT2: From the review:

but the incessant chatter of the female race announcer tends to grate as you're speeding along.
Eh, Omochao is female? I didn't know it had a gender. For that matter, no chao has a real gender. And I'd just turn the announcer off if it annoys me.
They used a woman for Omochao (very likely) OR Omochao has fine-tuned its voice (not as likely).
YOU DECIDE! O.o
okay, so i rented this game (i can do that now"> ) and was completely stunned by the opening visuals, seriously best Gamecube graphics ever.
then it turns to these crappy visuals. I could pretty much deal with them as i've seen a lot worse.
i've found that, since you don't get a tutorial that the instructions would be your best friend, too bad the instruction booklet didn't come with the game.
so i'm winging it, i get the controls after about a half-hour of getting my ass handed to me.
then i found out that i'm pretty good with sonic and knuckles. too bad tails COMPLETELY sucks. the controls aren't exactly the best. (by that i mean they kind of suck)
overall i don't think it's too bad of a game, it gives alot more story then Heroes did. even if the story isn't all that great.
Tails does Not suck. You just need to practice. After completing the missions and going back to replay the story, I found that the game really goes easy on you on story mode (except on Babylon starting with Storm in the ice factory).
My favorite character-gear would have to be Rouge and the Broom. Flying and grinding works really well.
And Eggman is pure awesome with the Cover-P.
After completing all 100 missions...

I unlocked NiGHTS, Ulala and Aiai. I prefer NiGHTS to the other two. But you'd expect that NiGHTS, E-10000G and E-10000R to have at least SOME form of voice, but noooo... Well, NiGHTS, as far as I know, doesn't have an official VA. But the E-10000 robots DID in story mode. Whatever reason they didn't give those two 'bots voices in the races greatly offends me. |
^Spoilers (Select To Read): Seeing that the Sonic games usually have sub-par voice acting, you see that lack of NiGHTS recieving a voice as a bad thing? o_0
