Yes, it's called "Story Mode".
No, it's called waiting around on the title screen, IIRC.
=S
Well, the first three stages of Story Mode have you race against puny E-10000 bots to get at least 3rd place, and that was easy even when I first started playing the game. Oh, and in my first Free Race, I got 6th place. Go me!
There is an actual tutorial that is accessable through the menu, although I forget exactly how. If SH says waiting on the title screen brings it up as well, I have no reason to disbelieve him. It's not a playable tutorial, but it's a video tutorial that explains how to play with considerable clarity.
You do have reason to doubt me, actually: I've not played the game. ;P
I just could've sworn somebody else brought this up before, and it was mentioned that it was on the title. Maybe that was just the demo?
Main Menu -> Extra -> Curse my poor memory -> Tutorial.
Congratulations, Shadow Hog. You have won my 'stfu' of the week. Now go OUTSIDE.
When we finally get our copies of Sonic Riders over here, I'm gonna purchase, though I have one major question I need to ask:
Which console should I get it for when I want the best version? XBox, PS2, or GC?
I think a review on one of the big sites said that the PS2 version surprisingly has no framerate problems compared to GC and somewhere else that the GC version actually gets the JP soundtrack. Those two things, if true, seem to make all the versions the same.
I'm getting the GC version just in case the PS2 version does get performance problems, and also because my PS2 is mysteriously incapable of handling 60hz on my TV while my GC is.
Oh, and I heard a rumor about the Xbox version having framerate troubles. I can't say I believe it.
UKians can get their hands on it from today onward! With any luck I'll be playing it within the hour.
Actually, to the best of my knowledge, only the Xbox gets the Japanese voice-overs, and that's if you want everything ELSE to be in Japanese, too.
30 down Gamestation - just HAD to feed my unending Sonic addiction, heh heh.
I might give my opinion on it in the next week or so, but who knows? 😛

I thought the PS2 version had the Japanese and English voice-over option also?
Gamecube version...
Although my brother's shouting at me for it, he wants it for PS2 but I'm not prepared to risk the framerate problems I had with heroes...
Honestly, Heroes wasnt a bad game on the Gamecube, but the PS2 version we bought originall was just...
Actually, I think the PS2 version ran at 60fps, from the demo at least(which surprised me). Don't know about the final game.

There's an option for Japanese subtitles, but not for dubbing.
EDIT: Oh, and it runs pretty damn smooth, to boot.
Ugh, then I hope this lack of choosing to switch to Japanese voice with English subs will be carried over to future Sonic games(at least the console ones) to the next-gen. That would be a step backwards, IMO.
I got it Saturday morning and have been playing it alot since. Story mode took me about 3 hours of playtime and isn't quite as hard as it's reported to be. The missions, however, are. Mission mode is killing me because I'm trying to get a gold on every mission I do before I go onto the next..it seems to equate to SA2 A-Rank difficulty.
It's unfortunate. The simple controls were presumably created in the interest of the younger half of the audience, but the high difficulty completely nullifies it.
Ohnoes @ new South Island forum header pic.
Other than that, I have most of the gear... Only about six or so missing from my collection. Heh heh heh... I love being cruel with the Ora Ora.
Recently got Sonic Riders, bought Friday and has been sat proudly in the GC drive for most of the weekend, apart from Splinter Cell: Pandora tomorrow, which I'm still enjoying.
The controls, yeah, simplistic...along with the stunt system - nowhere near as advanced as most games of the type, a'la Tony Hawks, but given that the game is more objective based and requires more along the lines of actual gameplay, coupled with the fact that you really don't need anything more than what they give you already, it's really a null point and ultimately not a big issue.
Story mode - shot through that in 8 hours or so, given that I'm not much of a racing game kinda guy and it took longer to get to grips with some of the courses.
Sound is fairly okay - usual dings and suchlike from the series, some of them a little jazzed up for the purpose of...whatever. Music was fairly okay, the main theme obviously being fairly good in itself. Didn't really think all that much of Catch me if you can, but maybe it'll grow on me, heh heh.
Ultimately I like the concept, and think the critics shoulda kept their yaps shut anyway. Thie game itself seems to have been judged harshly from the start, given that people wouldn't accept that even the Hedgie might like to use vehicular methods other than his feet...well, that seemed like something that kept cropping up in anti-riders topics I've read before.
I liked it, as a fan and a gamer, and feel that at the end of the day the only opinion that should matter is that of the person BUYING the game itself.
Just how I've always felt, so yeah...Oo
{ For the record, I liked Shadow, and mildly reasonably enjoyed Heroes, even if I still can't get more than 2 emeralds. 😛 }
I'm not gonna give it redundant marks outta % or 5, 10, or whatever...
I wanna just let you'se guys without it to go out there, buy the damn game and decide for yourselves. ^^;
There's hope for Sonic yet, if this small and enjoyable diversion is anything to go by...
{ and that's the bottom line, 'cause Mobius said so. XD }
This post is a spoiler. Avoid if you don't want to be spoiled. Otherwise, read on.
Spoilers (Select To Read): Sega Japan's website on Riders has posted the "mysterious three characters": Ulala (speed), NiGHTS (flight), and Aiai (power). They also list the attacks they use as they level up too.
I love NiGHTS's pics and attacks. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
They also posted Babylon's last track.
How do I get the old style spoilers?

It's quite simple: Play the game!! Bwahahaha! |
Oh Gizoid...
Anyone who is displeased with the high difficulty of Storm and Wave's missions: You ain't seen nothin' yet. Jet's missions are absolutely ABSURD.
Been playing this game and Shadow a lot since the weekend. Both are good but Riders is a lot better. Even playing alone is good. I beat all of the missions and unlock those three characters.
For the first time since SA2 the characters have all been well served and the new additions have had a purpose and been well drawn out...
Their not entirely three dimensional but this is the first time since SA2 that it's taken the time to flesh out anything really. So, Im pleased with Jet, Wave and Storm.
On the other hand Im very NOT PLEASED with the few characters available (especially at the start although it's growing) and even more NOT PLEASED at the limited number of tracks.
This game has so much potential, the graphics are finally up to Sonic Adventure standard (they've come full circle ) and the scene writing/acting isnt bad...
but there just should be soooooooo much more.
Too little and too short, it's fun but I would of loved to have a few more levels. Even if their shorter, or longer but only have one lap...
Anything, a bit more with a bit more variation...
I know it's like Kirby Air Ride, but I'm going to compare it to Jak X. Both series are 3D platformers gone a spin off racing game...
Both have their own unique spin on races; be it "air" or "fighting"
Both have some new and old characters and a simple plot drawn out over several cutscenes...
Jak X has over 30 tacks and several variations on each of them, several different modes to race in and lots and lots of cutscenes.
Sonic Riders has 8 levels (some of them are 2 halves, but come on, their PRACTICALLY identical) and even less cutscenes.
....
I really like the game but, I just feel that they could of made more of it.
(they've come full circle )
Haha, oh man, me and you have probably set a world record for the amount of LoK references on a Sonic the Hedgehog message board.
Anyways, have you unlocked the Sega characters or tracks? They add alot to the game. ...But the novelty wears off very soon{for the two tracks at least}, so they kinda don't really add alot...
Can't wait to pull off some tricks directly under the moon on Night Chase with NiGHTS on skates over and over till I get bored of it. ..Well, not exactly. I finished doing the missions{with all golds, no less} an hour or two ago but am saving treating myself to the rewards until tomorrow.
Alright, everyone: Favourite track? Music? Character? Attack? Character type? Gear? ..Gear type? Mode? >_>
In total, there are 16 characters and 16 tracks.

For today only, If UK Sonic fans care to look at Channel four's Text, 306 for Analogue, unknown to me for digital viewers, you'll read that Sonic Riders has a very poor review...
The details avoid me as such, but overall they were not impressed by the storyline, or the need to 'Run' after losing a whole tank of air...and also deemed the level up feature as fairly pointless. 😛
Overall, they gave it a score of 3 outta 10, and mention towards the end of the review that if Sonic 360, or whatever it's gonna be, fails to live up to it's reputation then they'll pretty much lose faith in the franchise on the whole.
BBC's review, which took place a week ago and was little more positive - giving it a whole 8 outta 10.
Again, I can't remember everything - given I wasn't really gonna post the details, but they felt it was innovative and somewhat fun to play...if flawed in some areas.
Both of 'em agreed on the speed factor, but not much else...
So yeah, two rather differing opinions that probably reflect the two differing opinions of the fandom of the latest games...:P
Interesting to note that the Channel four service 'Gamestation' mention that the only decent Sonic game to date since the megadrive days has been Sonic Rush, however...
Make of these vague notes what you will.

This seems to be the main consensus from gamers in general regaurding the franchise at present time.
Shame.
Sonic Riders is stashed away, hidden from sight. I've yet to unlock the last track, the uber secret characters or Jet's missions yet. I just stopped playing, and I'm currently aiming to complete Wild ArMs 3 once and for all.
It's more the recent influx of new games and the need to play them than any animosity towards the game itself. I just don't have the time to devote to it anymore.
I've read a somewhat poor review in EGM. Then again, they also praise Mario a bit too much that I stopped reading.
The scores average to a 5.75 (approximately).

Omg! Psxphile is being serious.
...
Where's Craig?
I'm with PSX here, except more extreme. Other new games (Oblivion, COC: DCOTE) have commanded my budget, so I'm holding on Riders until it shows up cheaper.
GameInformer gave it a 5, with a second opinion of 4. Unfortunately, this was their April magazine, so they included a parody related to Riders. This greatly offends me! }:O
Whoa, whao... Huh. What? I'm confused.
Redthehedgehog put a screenshots list on the wrong forum on the Gaming Forum, and the one screenshot that loaded up struck a semi-familiar chord to me...
CAPTAIN FALCON IS IN THAT CAR!
Now, I'm not familiar with the F-Zero series all that well, but anyone who's played Super Smash Bros... That's downright interesting.
So... That makes two games that F-Zero's been referenced to. This and the bosses that were in Shadow... Is an old F-Zero person working with Sega now, or something?
Edit: And oh. The only logical thing now is to go ahead and add Sonic to the next Super Smash Bros. game! =D
~Nytloc Penumbral Lightkeeper
There's no logic in that at all. The only possible link, given that the screenshot is genuine, would be that Sega developed F-Zero GX and had the models on loan from Nintendo for cameo appearances.
Which doesn't really matter, considering the shot is a painfully obvious hoax.
o.o @ nytlocthehedgehog
-nods at j- IT'S A HOAX.
Story Mode has some pretty funny jokes
Spoilers (Select To Read):
Wave: It's not the board. Your skills just suck.
Storm: WHAT? S.SSS...Suck?
Wave: Yes. S-U-C-K. Suck!
Storm: S..S..S...
Jet: Stop it!
Jet (dreaming about treasure): HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Wave's alarm sounds and Jet snaps to.
Jet: Why'd you do that? I was just having this great daydream.
Also see Eggman during his final scene. He's funny.
Also in multiplayer, Sonic Team decides to use Eggman's voice clip from Sonic Adventure 2. It's nice to hear Bristow again.

Say what now? I think you mean Bristow.
^Yeah, that's who I meant
Woot! I'm a HQ New Forumer.
Wait... why is there a 17th question mark on the characters page of Sonic Channel?! Could there be a 17th character that has not yet been found?!

I guess that is Supersonic, even though you unlock him by letting Sonic use a special gear type. |
Edit: Spoilered.
Yes, the extra slot represents Super Sonic.
Some people would call these spoilers, but they've been discussed over a month in the past without spoiler tags.
Yet it is BEST to put them in spoiler tags for those who have NOT seen them already and don't want the game SPOILED. Thank you.

I now just got it. Still yet to beat the Babylon Gardens track with its infernal no barriered turns of doom.
Still wish there was a difficulty change setting like in Sonic R...
Didn't like Jet's voice as much, 4Kids made him sound too Sonicey. I figured he would have a South American accent or something. Wave's voice was okay I guess. And I pictured Storm to be and sound smart, calm, and infuencal. 4Kids turned him into a right hand goon! ;__;
4Kids turned him into a right hand goon! ;__;
No, the way he acts in the scenes clearly shows that 4kids have got his voice spot-on; it suits him perfectly. And if you're talking about 4kids supposedly having influence on the script...that's only possible if it was developed in SoA, which I can't be assed to find out. I know it's developed by UGA which became one with Sega sometime around the DC's demise, but that doesn't really help me. Eh, whatever. Moving on...
Wave's VAing is excellent{person who did Blaze, right?} but Jet's isn't done right. Sonic VA guy seems to be trying too hard to seperate Jet's voice form Sonic's and as a result is making it sound bad at the cost of individuality.
Oh, and I would agree with you if we weren't talking about character/gear/miscellaneouslyminor spoilers, Thundie.
XPlay reviewed it. Not surprised with their rating at all. The game may appeal the Sonic fans but not the masses.
Well, I think it's great. I've been playing it for over a week strait, and I'm not tired of it yet!
Then again, I AM a Sonic fan....
Went to Target this afternoon and managed to play the demo.
I played with the available eight (Sonic and co sans Cream, Babylon thieves and Eggman). The game feels alright. The way to perform the tricks can use some work if there's a new version coming out. I had some trouble with the air slides but that was because I kept pressing the wrong button.
Needless to say, I don't like the Gamecube control.
:p
I saw it. It was funny
WWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Ok, after playing the game more the voices have grown on me. Especially once I got to the Babylon story. Still, the above is what I thought the characters would be like before I got the game.
Right now I'm at Dark Desert. It completely blew me away @__@
Although I have stopped playing it currently ever since I was in first at the last stretch of the race, missed the gap in the rail, and get attacked by sonic moments later in an anticlimactic ending on my part despite my heart beating crazy. I want to play it again sometime somehow...
