Seeing as it's a sort-of-sequel to Sonic R (it was originally called Sonic R Extreme after all), I'd really like to see Tails Doll and Metal Knuckles return (as well as Metal Sonic and Egg Robo). That'd be so awesome.

Well, the hover-boards have a very good reason for being part of the game -- They make it possible for the other characters to race Sonic! I mean, we've all complained that the side cast is far too similar to Sonic, and rightfully so. Right now, the only thing that makes Sonic superior to the others is his speed, so it wouldn't make sense to produce a racing game where Amy Rose could theoretically outrun him.

Back when Sonic R came out, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were all considered pretty equal in stats, minus a few abilities. They gave Amy and Eggman vehicles, and Viola, everyone was nearly square. Since SA1, however, they've been making a big deal over how different the characters are. Knux is a tracker, Tails is a Techie wizard, etc.

The hover-boards are just a fun way to level the playing field.

I think more people have been complaining that all the characters are more powerful than sonic due to matching his speed and on top of that each having even more special abilities. Lately it's pointed out more and more how every character is as fast as Sonic and that it's causing him to lose his special appeal. Effectively, hover-boards being used to match levels of speed doesn't make much sense.

Shadow's the only person that's as fast as Sonic.

I'm aware of all that. My point was that a racing game would be pretty unfair if Sonic was the only one racing at supersonic speeds, and Amy, Knux and Tails shouldn't be able too. Thus, hover boards allow for ANYONE to match his speed.

Sonic's speed makes him special, especially with the hordes of other characters now in the series. Putting everyone on boards preserves this, in that no one is actually RUNNING FASTER then Sonic.

i was talking to Acrio. i know you understand that.

anyway:

Gamespot hands-on preview:

Quote:

TOKYO--What do you get when you cross Sonic R with a snowboarding game? This must have been the question rattling around in the heads of the designers responsible for Sonic Riders, a new futuristic-looking hoverboard racing game that features characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.

At the Tokyo Game Show 2005, Sega is displaying the GameCube and PlayStation 2 versions of the game, though a version is also in development for the Xbox. The game seems like your basic character-driven racing game, though the tracks are filled with large jumps that give you an opportunity to put the game's trick system through its paces. You can execute a small number of grabs and flips, and after every big air opportunity, you'll receive a letter grade displaying how well you did with the tricks.

Sonic Riders features eight playable characters, including Tails and Sonic, who has much longer legs in this game than he normally does, which makes him look slightly slimmer and edgier than his normal, platform mascot-style design. Each rider is rated in multiple categories, like dash, limit, power, and curve. On tight turns, you can hit a trigger button to slide around the corner a little more gracefully than you normally would.

The game moves fast and appears to support up to four players. Sonic Riders is currently scheduled for Japanese release in 2006.

seems like a typical addictive solid racer.

4 player mode will probably be one of it's really strong points.

this is a must have for me since i have a pretty big family and alot of little relatives that would love this! B)

EDIT: i also should add that according to IGN, at TGS there were two different air boards for each character. they also said that there were many air boards blacked out indicating that as you go through the game, you earn new air boards for your character. each air board has it's own rating.

here's more on the "Turbulence" system:

Quote:

Air and "Turbulence" are big parts of the game. You might notice a lengthy stream of air left in the wake of other racers. The is known as turbulence, and by hopping aboard it, you get a speed boost. You have to also pay close attention to your air tank, as if it goes to zero, the race becomes horribly slow. To build up your tank, you can collect rings that are scattered around the track, perform tricks, or even enter a pit area located in certain areas of the track. When riding the turbulence stream, your trank does not deplete.

here's also more about the controls and tracks available in the demo:

Quote:

Control over your characters is tight and the sense of speed is impressive. Track designs look like what you'd expect of a Sonic game, with the harder course having players race on the face of giant vines and the beginner's course reminding us of one of the many city settings we've seen in the 3D Sonic games. We managed to find a couple of shortcuts, and even boarded vehicles to be carried from one section of the course to another. The only problem we had was with a few confusing points where our racer fell off the course and had to be transported back.

also, at TGS there were only two of the three versions available: PS2 and GC. here's IGN's opinion about the versions:

Quote:

We tried out both the PS2 and GameCube versions. The PS2 manages to hold up well to the GameCube version, with similar image quality and no framerate problems. However, there is some added pop-up in the PS2 version at this point. If that gets cleared up, and assuming there are no weird issues with loading and so-forth, players whould be okay with either version of Sonic Riders.

Because the game is apprantly based around a "half-pipe" of air currents that changes each time you race.

Sonic looks a hell of a lot more dynamic than he has done in ages. Check his extreme hand positioning! It's all kinds of better than the chubby Sonic Advance art.

One of my friends asks the same question: why hover boards? Really, I don't see a running racer being that great. Maybe I just have too many bad memories of Sonic R, but I like the hover boards idea. If only I could guarantee that Sonic Team will make it great.

I'm presuming the story will tell us the why they use hoverboards instead of cars/shoes/whatever.

I like the Riders' art as it's Sonic X-ish. The other game, the one with Blaze the Cat, has the same art as the Advance series (it's obvious, so say my eyes).

it's rather obvious once you think about it:

Technical-wise:
Sonic would smoke anybody (except Shadow) if it was a foot race. Naka mentioned that with a chuckle when asked if Sonic would do more kart racing like Mario. the team who were thinking up stuff for this game probably asked themselves "Sonic's too fast for a fair foot race so we need them on a form of transportation. what type of transportation could someone like Sonic ride in/on that would suit him?". the obvious answer was a board. it fits Sonic's wild/adventurous personality and is really the only form of transportation that Sonic wouldn't look out of place on given the fact that he's surfed on a board various times before.

Story-wise:
Eggman probably proposed an air board race cause he knows that a foot race would be pointless given the fact that Sonic is the fastest natural (i said "natural" because of Shadow and his artificial arse:cuckoo ) runner in the world. an air board race will be fair enough to other racers. that's probably when he called up Babylon for their services or it's because of the fact that they are notorious top-notch air boarding thieves that gave Eggy the idea.

Man, after seeing those videos, this game looks even more awesome. I assume the spin dash is where the speed power comes in; plus, I believe Tails will probably be able to fly on his board since Sonic can spin dash. BTW, thanks, janu, for putting these up; I couldn't get them to work on Kikizo's(sp) website, or maybe I just didn't have enough patience with them loading.:nn;

Because as we know he's something of an adreneline junkie, and Flying boards would be an interesting diversion from running...besides, he can't very well RUN the courses intended.
Besides, if he was challenged to take part, I suspect the hedgie wouldn't say no.

I've found some gameplay vidoes and I don't know if they we're posted on this topic but here it is:

The video with Knuckles show that you can fall off the course and just magically reappear. There are plenty of rings & ring boxes around too.

SEGA will release a sequel to its racing game Sonic Riders on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 according to producer Takashi Yuda.

More interestingly, Yuda-san revealed that sections of SEGA would like to see Space Channel 5 return on next-generation platforms.

Speaking at a press event in London this week, Yuda-san told Eurogamer, "there will be a sequel to Sonic Riders, and it will definitely be on PS3 and Xbox 360". Definitely, we responded, parrot-like to the last? "Yes."

How about Space Channel 5? There are people - higher-ups, it seems - who are keen on the idea, Yuda-san told us. "But nothing has been decided."

Yuda-san also said that that his team was interested in porting the current-gen Sonic Riders to PlayStation Portable, although, again, nothing's been decided at this point.

Before any of that, however, we'll have to wait and see Sonic Riders itself. Due out in early 2006 on PS2 and Xbox, the Sonic-inspired racing game has players coasting along on hover-boards powered by air, a stock of which is replenished by performing tricks and pausing at refill stations and can also be used as an F-Zero-style boost.

Source.

I'm going to laugh a lot if Sonic Riders is the lowest selling game of 2006.

And still no news on the Revolution. Wonder if this means that Sega has dropped Nintendo entirely, or whether they just can't say anything about it yet cause Nintendo is so paranoid about the details of the console...

I think its the latter about the Revolution. Yuji Naka said (Before the controller was revealed) that it was interesting.

IGN Preview Impressions
Sonic Riders just seems to be a simplified version of SSX. That seems to be the only thing they complained about.

Dont you mean Trickstlye? Or even that eye toy game. Kirby Air Ride was just the one button (If I'm right.). No directional support needed.

And hoverboards are cool. Sonic does stuff thats cool. Period. He is shallow in that way.

Yeah, Kirby Air Ride was a one button game, but the whole hoverboard premise reminds me of the hovering stars in Air Ride, and the fact that it's called Sonic Riders. I guess the actual gameplay might resemble Trickstyle or SSX, but on the surface, it looks like KAR to me.

Will Crush 40 put a song together for this game? They've done one for every 3D sonic game since Sonic Adventure (except Shuffle) and whilst enjoying Waking Up in shadow I got wondering, will there be vocal music to this game or not...

It's made by a different team, so Jun sunou might not get involved right? Hmm....

I would have though they would do some songs for Riders if not the Title track. As well as Julien K and Remix Factory (who did the Eggman Remix which I am listening to now) Mind you I did like the music with the Sonic Riders trailer.

AiAi? Odd. Amigo (Samba de Amigo) would be better, IMO. Also.. what the heck does this mean: "and the storied Babylon Rouge treasure"?

Hm, Jet isn't wearing his goggles in that screen.

This article certainly makes the game seem more interesting. Wonder what month in 2006 we're looking at for a release date..

What would make sense would be that everyone would have their own track.

Welcome to Sega where everyone wants the return of Fang but They give us Shadow the Hedgehog: The Interactive Movie.

I DEMAND DR. BADBOON. And before every race the Super Monkey Ball Monkeys perform the Co-Operation Dance. There if your going to force characters in from other games you do it WHOLE ASSED.

*Begins Thinking... Maybe Sega could expand on this... Sega Land where Akira owns a Dojo and there is a problem with black tenrecs and gun crime.

Not cool.

I was humored by the prospect of Eggman using a board, then excited when it seemed like he would be riding a bike. But a scooter? No. I hope this is just some alternate vehicle.
