It's "NiGHTS", and you forgot Fang and any of the Burning Rangers. Plus, if Ai Ai gets in, nothing's stopping them from putting in OTHER Sega-liscensed characters - Vectorman, Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III (aka "Clockwork Knight"), Axel Stone, Ryo Hazuki, Akira, Astal, Beat, the Hornet (well if Fighters Megamix could...), Pepsiman (well if Fighting Vipers could... it'd still be brilliantly unlikely), Pengo, Ristar, Sketch Turner, That One Guy From Space Harrier, Flicky, Opa-Opa, Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, Ulala, a ChuChu, some random Panzer Dragoon character (Edge, maybe?), a Shining Force character, a Phantasy Star character (NOT Online, earlier than that), Amigo... I think you can see where I'm heading with this.
Admittedly, yes, most of these aren't by the team who made Super Monkey Ball. But who cares? Just seeing some of these referenced would be interesting...
I know I would take Ulala over many of the Sonic characters mentioned.
Opa-Opa appearing in this game would be hilarious and full of ten flavors of awesomeness.
Hmm...... I was looking at GHZ, and there was a monkey badnik called 'Ai-ai'. People at SSMB are thinking that this may be the Ai AI mentioned, instead of teh SUper Monkey Ball version. I mean, Nintendo Power called Jet Bean, so they could be wrong about Ai ai.
I think it might turn out like that, but I'm not so sure. I don't see anything special about playing as a robotic monkey.
It could be more of an "obsticle" racer than a playable character.
Then again there was Egg Robo in Sonic R. He is a badnik so, I think Mega might have a good point

I beleive that Orta would be more likely, as she was one a newer release. While Edge would be cool, I doubt enough people in the current mainstream would have any idea who he is, while Orta was at least on a current gen system.

EDIT: My bad. I missed it in Shadow Hogs' list, so he wins my nets, for suggesting it first.
Maybe they'd have Ethan from Phantasy Star Universe as a secret character. In the videos he's seen riding a hoverboard, it seems only natural to include him.
However I'm all for Alex Kidd as a playable character. It's about time SEGA bring him back! As for the Ryo Hazuki suggestion, that guy's never getting out of the cave.

Dang, your right Shadow Hog I did forget about Fang and the Burning Rangers. I like your list btw although I doubt we will ever see Pepsiman here in the west. About Ethan from PSU yeah he does look like a possible character.

I really am starting to love the new art style, especially Rouge, whose outfit is my favourite out of the ones she's had. And Eggman looks a little old-schoolish, don't you think?

So says one guy from the GHZ message board who's also now on staff at Sega Europe. He also mentions that the Story mode cutscenes will be some of the best sequences yet in a Sonic game.

So I guess that's what the fairly lame looking robot is (that we've seen in two shots now), then. He doesn't look more impressive than Omega, or the E-2000s.. so why such a high number? Ten Thousand? Yeesh. Why couldn't he have been one of the E-100 models we've not seen? Phi was allowed to be, after all.

It's a very reasonable assumption that Super Sonic is going to be in this game, because it's inevitable, particularly if the Chaos Emeralds end up being involved in the storyline.
So assuming that the list above comes from any sort of reliable source (which I HIGHLY doubt) then there's your list of characters.

I thought it was comfirmed to have 16 racers. Psx named the 16 characters.
Actually, the OFFICIAL website has 17 slots, so there's still one more possibility.

Well its not like 'secret' info of various Sonic games have not been leaked months before the actual release and Sonic Team seem to be lousy at keeping everything in wraps.
And is it really that hard to believe that characters other Sonic Team franchises would not be in this seeing that a character from an Amusement Vision game somehow snuck in here.
I'll guess we will find out with the inevitable Sonic Riders cutscene/movie downloads from a certain place in the following weeks.
And how do we even know AIai is confirmed? I mean ,Nintendo Power called et 'Bean', so there. I mean, I'm not trusting this guy at GHZ or NP until I see proof for myself. I personally think CHaotix is more likely than Ulala or NiGHTS.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo Power just speculated that the character looked like Bean, not confirmed it as such. I don't think they ever flat out said "Bean from Sonic the Fighters has returned". Besides, considering the amount of fans who speculated the same thing, it's a bit much to keep trying to discredit the info based on that.
I'm not saying they couldn't have been wrong, but don't blow things outta proportion.
Still, how can we trust this guy at GHZ? He could be making the whole SEGA of Europe stuff up.

*shrugs* It's not like he would be the first person from Sega that actually visited the forums or known about the site. If he's BSing then he probably be tagged in a humilating way or 'douched'.
Besides, I seriously wouldn't put it past Sega to drop the Chaotix for NiGHTS, Aiai(which was already rumored before this news), and Ulala. Not that' I'm really complaining.
Still, I'm not going to trust him. I mean, he didn't even mention the 17th character... nor anything like that. Seeing is believing, IMHO. Besides, I like Chaotix better. XP

I have to admit apart from the robots (One of which we have seen) I'm more than happy with the rumoured roster. I have to admit after Big had the most painful grind in Heroes you know this surely would have suited him as well as Omega.
So...
Big and Omega > Robots
Ulala, AiAi and NiGHTs > Chaotix (besides, Vector and his voice...ugh.)
Oh well. Sonic Riders 2097 then.
Meh... NiGHTS is cool, and Aiai would kinda make sense, but Ulala? O.o I just don't see her fitting in a SONIC game. Well, until there is official art leaked or teh game comes out, we'll just have to wait. Personally, I can see Fang being the final unlockable and ending up being the secret leader of the Babylon Rogues. SEGA did say that there would be some surprises. 
ALso, the secret characters seem to be encountered during story mode, so teh whole 'SHadow not being in cutscenes' thing seems kinda iffy, IMO. We'll just have to find out in February.

Why not? This is the same team that managed to place Sonic and company in PSO and Billy Hatcher, NiGHTS references in Burning Rangers, and Sonic, Space Channel 5 references in Feel the Magic. And what is more surprising than non-Sonic characters in a Sonic game? 
Also, I have a feeling the last character will be predictably, Super Sonic.

That wasn't a good game. It was a random mess of mediocrity. Seriously, the game felt random(level selection, partners--it really sucked when you got heavy) and I didn't find the whole concept enjoyable.
Certain character animations from that game was nice though.
Well I haven't played Chaotix, but I LIKED Shadow and Heroes. Sure, Heroes had a sucky story, but I found it fun, and never ran into any glitches. I also found Shadow enjoyable. ^^ Also, Vector rocks, end of story if you ask me. Sure hsi voice now sucks, but he's still the most fun SOnic character, IMHO. And teh reason I don't see Ulala working is because she's a human, while the others, spare Robotnik(he's very cartoony compared to Ulala), are either robots or furries. Nights and Aiai are ok, though... but I'd still rather have Chaotix.

But there has been 'normal' looking humans visible in Sonic games since 7 years ago when SA1 debuted. Heck, they are more prominent in Shadow the Hedgehog and there is even a certain human character that is playable there. =P And like I said Sonic & Co. cameoed in PSO(cartoony creatures in 'serious' game OHNOS!) and there doesn't seem to be any complaints there. What makes Ulala's appearance any different than Sonic&Co appearance in PSO?

Why not? The GHZ is usually known as one of the fastest place to get news about the Sonic games-wise and the forums seem to be fairly well-known.
Is it the AiAi from Super Monkey Ball or the one from the original Sonic games? I know this was asked before. I think it's AiAi from Super Monkey Ball, right? What is GHZ?
So, yeah, that list on The GHZ seems to be a tough sell right now for some people (like those at GameFAQs). A lot of people swear up and down that the Chaotix nad Omega deserve to be in the game more than Ulala or AiAi. Heck, there are people who honestly think that Nintendo Power mistook Amigo for AiAi... which I could see the validity of, if this list hadn't already come out.
Well, I still have my doubts, despite what has already been said. Sure, I'd love to see NiGHTS, but not the other two, and until official art or screens are released, I still won't believe that guy. Anyway, I wonder if the cutscenes will all be animated, or in CG like in the original trailer showing Sonic saying "I'll show you what true speed really is!".

I'm actually finding AiAi harder to accept than Ulala. Like Ashide said, humans have long been established in Sonic now, and at least Ulala looks cool. AiAi is just this weird lollipop-eared monkey somewhere between Sonic and co and the small animals that are trapped inside Eggman's old robots.
