P.S.: The only Sonic game I'm cautionally optimistic about is Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Heavily seconded until they announce Rush 2.

Oddly enough, I can see Robotnik cloning himself instead. Or something.

I'n not sure if we are even getting a Rush 2 if the talk about Sega-Sammy and DIMPS having a falling out due to company conflict is true. =(

Gamespot has got some alternate costumes for the characters.

It seems the game suffers from tough AI (Like Riders, Shuffle etc.). But it is alright to play. That seems to be the verdict from the Sonic Cult forums.

Thanks a lot John. NOW I'M BLIND!

Eww that model of Sonic is ugly, it looks like it was drawn by one of those Archie Sonic artists *thinking Ron Lim*. Even if it was on the DS, I'd prefer the Sonic R model over that. Although I suppose it looks better from a distance. Or they could've used cell-shading to cover it up like most developers do these days; go from blocky and plain to funky and animated in no time!

There's the link for the outfits.

Silver look weird in those outfits.

Btw according to card 150 the name of the Metal Sonic from Sonic Heroes is Neo Metal Sonic( and no he doesn't say "Whoa" ).

Ok, so STH360 explains Blaze being in Sonic's dimension in the future by

Spoilers (Select To Read): sending her to another dimension

Sonic Rivals explains it by

Spoilers (Select To Read): Eggman Nega being from the future, which doesn't exactly fit his name anyway

So were the writers of both games just not communicating? WTF?

Oh, and by the way, the flames on one of Shadow's alternate costumes are meant to make him go faster. nN

Veckums, I don't think Rivals is cannon at least that what I understood from the ending of STH360. Rush I still have my doubt.

Other than a few semi-minor problems with it, I'll probably end up picking this game, at least when it comes under used.

And now for the real point of this post:

And what's your scientific basis for that, huh?

MY MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

You know what the weird thing is?
When we had the list of Sonic games at E3, TGS etc.
The general consensous was:
Sonic the Hedgehog: Has to be good.
Secret of the Rings: Fun if gimmicky. Surprise hit, was the words.
Sonic: Genesis: Why are they still whoring this out. Stop it now Sega.
Sonic Rivals: Going to be teh uber-shite. lolz.

But the result is:
Sonic the Hedgehog: Rather average. Some like it, some hate it.
Sonic: Genesis: Why? How? WTF? No one imagined that it was going to be that bad.
Sonic Rivals: Well, according to some people on Sonic-CulT Forums who have "acquired" it and IGN (I think they have a review of it), its not bad. Its quite fun.
Of Course Secret of the Rings hasn't even bothered to exist yet. :p
My world is shaken by this. I need to lay down.

So uh...does anyone have the lowdown on the Storyline for this game yet, or is it another "ZOMG, EGGMAN IZ TAKING OVER THE WORLD, YOU GOTS TO STOP HIM AS SONIC OR SHADOW OR SILVER LOLOLOLOL"?

I have a link to the entire text from the game.

But for basic story info look on the Europe site I posted a while ago.

It's more along the lines of "ZOMG EGGMAN IZ TURNIGN SONICS FRINSD INTO CARDS U GOTTA STOP HIM AS SONIC SHADZOR OR SILVER OR KNUCKLS LOLOLOLOLOL".

Having only recently got into N64 gaming, I'm very much agreeing.

1) PSP is not a portable PS2, the graphics are very N64/PS1 like.
2) Quaility on Computers make screenshots and videos look inferior than their real gameplay. (I didn't know which words to use. XD)

Actually, they often look suspiciously and deceptively better.

A PSP has not got the power to play PS2 games. Hence why most of the PSP games that came out on a older console are mostly PS1 games.

Edit: How could they look better? That's impossible.

I never said the PSP had the power of putting in exactly PS2 quality graphics. However, many of the 3D games on the system looks above the graphical imput of what the N64/PS1 did I mean just look at Dexter and Tekken:D R for example.

I mean if you think the PSP is N64/PS1 quality then what's the 3D quality equivilant of the DS?

You've got me there. I would think that a DS is of a Sega Saturn quality?

It isn't. Framerate's a solid 30fps. Not stellar but not terrible by any means. Animation isn't very eye-catching, though. They seem so stilted.

Ok that was very confusing without being able to see who's talking but apparently Spoilers (Select To Read): Silver is still in the future, and this is a non-Iblis version of Silver who came back in time to stop Eggman Nega, who is a descendant of Eggman. Since STH360 never happened but can give us hints, like Omega killing Shadow, that probably means Blaze is still in Silver's future, and they both fight Eggman Nega in the version of their future where Iblis doesn't exist. So this isn't actually a plothole, and Sonic Rush has been retconned into Blaze and Eggman Nega being from the future instead of another dimension.

But that makes the whole business of Blaze being sent into another dimension in STH360 totally pointless, which either means that the Rivals writers saw STH360's cast and explained it, with no cooperation between the writing teams, or Blaze was sent into another dimension, and that version, shielded from time travel shenanigans in the main dimension, and the other dimension version of Eggman Nega are the ones we saw in Sonic Rush.

Isn't time travel combined with alternate dimensions an amazing literary device for bleeping up universes?

But anyway, the main point is, Silver is still in the future, so that resolves that question about STH360 and Sonic Rivals. That means that if Silver or Blaze show up again, they will bring similarly convoluted plots, so that's more reason that they should not.

Seen one or two previews come up, which think it would be a good game without a) the pointless weapons, or b) the whole racing thing.

Spoilers (Select To Read): To be honest Veck I think the whole alternate dimension was a mistranslation. There were rumours/fanboy speculation that it was going to be revealed that Blaze and Silver were from the same world as Sonic only in the future. They are saving that one for Sonic Rushing Rivals.

I don't see it as Blaze being sent into another dimension in Silver's ending but she died. Somehow the events of Sonic Next are unwritten and thus Blaze is reborn in the same world as she was in Sonic Next only without the whole Lava monster thing.

And Sonic is his own Grandma. Oh shi...

And all of a sudden, Sonic Rivals is out to buy!
And I saw it and thought "Oh..." and considered buying it maybe in the future after I get Tekken DR or Capcom Classics Remixed (Strider, baby!)

I bought Rivals today. I've only played the first two acts though. It's about as good as Sonic Rush. It plays pretty smoothly. Problem is, I suck. Badly. This game would be so much better without the racing gimmick, because the computer player just feels too cheap, sometimes. I can't tell you how many times I've caught up with the opponent only to be beaten down because he was invincible at the moment.

Ditto with everything that Nelstone just said. I just got it today too. I went to E.B. Games with some trades only to find a used copy of SR just arrived.

I didn't think I'd get to play this game since I traded in my PSP towards a pre-order on a Nintendo Wii 2 months ago. However as fate would have it, my neice got one as a present from her grandad. This benefits me, as she lives with our family and leaves the PSP here most of the time.
So, I got the game, and she's got the system. Works out good for both of us.

The game plays alot better than what I remember at E3. It plays like the competetive modes in Sonic 2&3, but with the 3-D camera angles of a game like Klonoa, or Pandemonium. More Sonic games should play that way. I'd love to see this engine done as a full-blown console game.

The game is a little tough, but better that than to breeze through it.

Anyone else notice that in the past five years, the portable Sonic games have been ALOT better than the console ones?

Well the handheld games had been made by different developers like Rush being made by Dimps and now Rivals which made by the creators of Death Jr, Backbone Entertainment. Maybe Sega should consider outsourcing the consoles games to someone else.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

The worst Sonic developers seem to be Sonic Team themselves.

I've had time to play the game some more...

Bosses seem to be the easiest thing in this game. It's pretty much because the rival character spends most of their time trying to hit you instead of the boss, and when they do go after the boss, they seem to fail miserably.

The second boss fight is annoying because there are floating platforms, and Sonic seems to take an extra step when you stop on them, usually causing him to fall off. Get hit, and you fall through the platforms, having to climb back up while your rival continues to be a jerk.

I've finally gotten the hang of racing (planting traps and such) but it still seems like I've only got a 50% chance of winning. I blame this somewhat on the parts of a level in which you must push an object out of the way to keep going. Gives your opponent too much time to catch up IMO.

The first race I've had against Metal Sonic in story mode was awesome. The level is an Act 2 and is a hellish version of the first act, and there are many more loops so it feels like a roller coaster ride. Funny, seeing as how the race is on a roller coaster track.

Somehow my nephew got the game for christmas so, whilst visiting his parents I nmanaged to waste a day stealing his PSP :p
After retrying the first level a while, to get a hang of the X and o moves to go up or across on trick parts it's surprisingly fun.

No, the surprising thing is that it's neither BAD or UGLY. The game is neither, it's brilliant fun, fast action and it looks divine when seen in motion. I'm sure the screenshots are fugly, i remember hating them, but in action the game is... wow. Well, at least the background and characters are, the robots/bosses arent quite but their as near as dammit.

The game is put together and presented brillianty, in a way I wish the 3D games could remember. As I havent played Rush yet I have to say, best Sonic game I've touched since SA2.

Actually, I thought the storyline was stupid and bare boines. The gameplay is decent though. The 2&1/2D camera system works well.

As I suspected, reviews are leaning in the "not a bad game, could be so much better without the racing" direction.

Really i have seen this and i ususally buy any game featurings Sonic but for some reason something made me stay away from this maybe the price of whaty i thought was probly a bad game kept me away im not sure. However if Sonic fans give it good ratings i will buy it how would you compare it to Sonic Rush (got that on release day :) .
