I'm sorry John, but you seem to be mistaken. Sonic fan characters are ones that are made by people who don't work at Sega.
A mere technicality Mr Toby...
Official Fan Characters!
So, what, is that supposed to be some sort of torpedo robot?

I believe that some folks at Sega are actually inspired by devianTART for new character designs.
Is that a fact, or are you just saying words?
TOTAL FACT, DUDE!
u_u
Spite, the cool soundtrack is not gone. Listen to the music during the boss battles toward the end of the video. That's pure Naganuma. The other parts go too fast to give you a real taste of the soundtrack. Especially with friggin' Sonic going "Yeah! Yeah! Cool! Yeah!"
The first boss battle seems to be similar to Adahan Fall from Ristar, well without having to fight while falling in the pit. And the second...Sonic is being attacked by a mobile. Awesome. Although you would think such a boss fight judging by its looks would be best taking place in a space observatory.
That other boss is reminescent of the Night Carnival zone boss of the first Sonic Rush.
EDIT:
Famitsu scans taken from the GHZ, which in turn were taken from NeoGAF:

Another new character! :O Looked a little like Nack in one screenshot but isn't.
The new Racoon character's name, if I interpreted the kana right, is Marin. A play on marine perhaps?
Also interesting is that her house is apparently located on "Southern Island".
Aw, dangit, it happened again. I was all set to post this info and got beat to it. BTW, Erika, apparently, you're correct about the name as someone on the GHZ translated it out the same way. Are you sure that ain't Nack, maybe an reenvisioning of him?
='( That game looks so sweet. I wish I still had my Wii. =/
It looks a lot like Nack, but that's definately not his hat. I guess his appearance could have been updated, but it does look more strikingly similar to Nack the more I look at the scans, We'll have to wait and see. The 3D sections seem interesting, so I guess this is where the "adventure" in the title comes in.
Also, The UK release date has been confirmed as the 28th September 2007. Joy.
BTW,

Do you mean you still wish you had your DS?
It looks like a throwaway shop character, or a miner. There is a mine level, right?
Another...nice job, Sega. At least this one isn't ugly.
Still loving this though, can't wait for the game to come out.
>_< Hahah yea DS thanks Ray. Oh and:

thanks HSW...I feel great now. =P
The racoon girl's name could also be Malin, although Marin sounds a lot better.
I don't mean to be a negative Nancy, but I'm not really impressed with this game. It doesn't really have anything that Rush doesn't (gameplay wise anyway; yeah I know there is the new jet ski mode, but that's just a quick slide across the screen). Maybe they'll add something crazy with the online capabilities, but I'll probably just wait for the price to go down before I get this one.
Marin also means chestnut. Also, I think the girl could be a raccoon, red panda or even a tanuki. I imagine raccoon though for English translations.
Alright, I made an attempt at translating the info right beside the raccoon girl's picture in the first page of the scan:
"A Raccoon brimming with curiosity who lives in Windmill Town. She has a strong yearning and interest for adventure. Why does she speak in Kansai (region around Tokyo and Osaka) dialect?"
The last sentence is probably referring to something she's saying in one of the cutscenes.
Oh no. During localization they could turn that into a lisp.
We are in grave danger.
Marin The Raccoon. Nice name. So what the name of Captain Whiskers minion?
Hahahah grave danger. That's funny.
Could it also be Marine? Like the sea?
Most likely. The katakana is Marin, but looking at my dictionary, that could pass for Marine, even though 'Mariin' would be closer.
Marine would be a cute name. I like it.
It seems to lack some contents in the story section. From what it looks like, Marin finds Sonic washed up on the beach. Hmm....I think I know what this means.
ZOMG MARIN IS TEH DREAMZ SHE AINT REALZORZ ZOMFG!!!1111! SONIC HAS 2 WAKN TEH WINDFISHIES!!!!!1 LOLOLOLOLOLZ
I just thought it meant Sonic couldn't swim. =P

Don't even friggin' think about it, you spiney little blue git. I'm still recovering from Link doing it.
Hmmm...reference to WW, maybe?
Reminds me of Emerl washed up on the beach in Battle.

Try Link's Awakening.
And man was the ending to that game depressing.

It's hard not to think about it you ol' Gyser. =p

So instead of Chaos Emeralds, Sonic will have to track down seven instruments instead?
Yea you can tell i've not played Zelda. >_>
;_; no, not again... NOT AGAIN!!!
Marin's father turned into a raccoon once in Link's Awakening.....
Oh shoot...the title of this game takes on a whole new meaning now...and yes I haven't beaten the game yet and didn't know it was all a dream...I hate those kind of games...
Well, I'm pretty confident that it wasn't Link's dream, but yeah... Still my favorite Zelda, closely followed by Ocarina.
Anyway, there's also apparently a koala character. Yay.
Is that the Fang lookalike?

More or less, yeah
The first thing I thought of that character was "Hey, he looks like a fisherman."
Then I see the Nack-a-like comments.
The more I looked at it, the less I think it's Nack. Look at the first screen of him and stare at his eyes. Those aren't eyes of a bounty hunter.

O_O
Marine the Raccoon, hm? I suppose she's some kind of swimmer. Maybe her pigtail thingers can miraculously spin around (!?!?) and act like propellers.
She's like the submarine version of Tails. =P

If this actually happens it could be the best thing since helicopter fox.

Or they could competely ignore it during localization like they did Emerl's odd speech pattern in Battle.

So true. We never actually heard Emerl's voice. Before he could talk, all he did was clicks and squeaks. After he was able to, we never actually heard it.
Either that, or the dub was too lazy to give him one. Even so, he still stayed with his onomatopoeian language till the end.
