Assuming that this isn't a hoax this is what we would have gotten post spinball. The gameplay looks kinda crap, but if this is true, "Whoa..."
If it's genuine, it's awfully slow for a Sonic game.
Its very slow. I can't help but think of Spinball. Somewhat nice looking animation, slow as crap with clunky, asinine, and amatuerish controls
What the hell was that "Spikeblast" thing? oO
This game looks about as dire as Sonic Laybrinth. Let's take one of the most important aspects of the Sonic franchise, great idea!
The only good thing about this was the animation and that this game never came into fruitation. That one less bad Sonic game on the market.
It's like the unholy love child of Spinball and Sonic Labyrinth.
I remember hearing about a SatAM game that was being made and then canceled with what was left turned into what was going to be Sonic X-treme. Didn't know there was a video though, that was great.
The background graphics are almost Comix Zone like. This game would of been great if it was like some of the other characters instead of Sonic or maybe if the entire thing was a free flash game on Sega's website.

The background graphics are almost Comix Zone like.
That's because the main programer of this demo programed Comix Zone.
It looked to me like it was some sort of stealth game...Sonic was hiding from spy orbs and using rings as weapons. While such an approach is at least interesting, it also commits the cardinal sin of any Sonic game in that it's not very fast. Still, it's cool to see Sally as an official videogame sprite, and not just as a fan-made sprite.
Sega-16: Roger Hector mentioned that a sequel to was planned, but the team "broke away from Sega." Was he referring to the STI's split so that part of the group could work on the Saturn?
Peter Morawiec: Probably. Comix Zone hadn't performed as well as we all hoped (the PS1 stole our thunder) and Sega was focused on launching the Saturn. Adrian, Howard (the composer) and I decided to move to LA and develop games for Sega as an independent studio. However, Roger and Shinobu (SoA VP) convinced us to stay with Sega and helped us establish a satellite STI office in Burbank, where we were tasked with producing a Sonic game for the Saturn (not to be confused with Sonic Xtreme). We created some interesting technology and designs, but ultimately Naka didn't approve, so that was it. During that time I also created some concepts for a 3D-based Comix Zone, but nothing ever came of it.
I'm guessing this was the game Morawiec was referring to. Why does it not surprise me that it was Naka who didn't approve? I'd sure like to know why he didn't approve...was it because the game was slower than standard Sonic, or because Naka had an aversion to U.S.-created characters like Sally?
Possibly both, in a way. I mean it does seem to stray far from the Sonic formula in terms of gaming concept and motif. Also I do believe Naka, like many others at Sega of Japan was biased against Sega of America. It almost makes sense why a programmer was protective of one of his babies, but allowed some truly mediocre Sonic games like Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Laybrinth, and Shadow the Hedgehog come to pass.

What about Sonic Spinball?
Nice video. A bit surprised by the stealth elements. The animation look good. Seeing Sally at the end was good too.
As for the interview
Quote:
From what I gathered (and later on experienced firsthand), the main issue was Naka's sense of ownership over Sonic and his perfectionism.
*stares at Sonic Heroes and Shadow games*
What perfectionism? He must be talking about a different Naka.
I think that Naka was lost, after he have obtained that 3rd Ferrari.
It looks like a CD-i game.
Seriously, I'm almost tempted to say I wouldn't be surprised to start such a game up and see Sonic stretching and rambling "GEE, IT SURE IS BORING AROUND HERE!"
Seeing Sally respond with "MAH BOI, THIS PEACE IS WHAT ALL TRUE FREEDOM FIGHTERS STRIVE FOR" would be a little... hard to conceive, actually.
"I CAN'T WAIT TO SMASH SOME SWATBOTS!"
I'm just shocked that we were this close to a Sonic SatAm game coming out.Another think. From Kotaku.
What about Sonic Spinball?
I'm not counting Sonic Spinball...that was just a one-second cameo, and if I remember correctly, the sprite was of an earlier version of Sally, used in the first Archie issues, as well as the SatAM pilot.
Wow, thats pretty sweet. SpikeBlast looks awesome. While watching that I came across a fanmade 2-D interpretation of SA. I'm sure alot of you have seen this, but I thought it was nicely done. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WWhBs_8NgY
Looks like a masterpiece, everything I want in a Sonic game, but where's the speed?
I still would rather have this than Sonic Rush Adventure (I'd even take this over a Sonic Adventure 3)
I'm with Alex on this, sort of. A Sonic game about the SatAM cartoon would have sold quite well since it's release would have been in 1993/94. I do believe that the game was well done, but if they had given Sonic enough room, he would have been able to run.
Loving the techno music ()_()
Anybody have any pics of the FF's from Sonic Spinball? That game was just too hard, and I could never get past the first level. >_<
What would you have done if this game was released to set time?

Oh no it would have sold since Sonic was still popular at the time, but it probably would have been blasted to hell from gaming mags like Spinball and 3D Blast was because they deviated far from the Sonic formula.
I for one am glad this game didn't come out. It looks like one of thoes games one plays as a little kid thinking how awesome it is, only to play it again later in life and going "WTF is this crap?!". Like how I thought about Spitball, err-- Spinball... XD
Animation good but the rest of the video makes me go, "Ewwwww,". Still if it went 6 times faster and looked alot better, I could maybe see it working...
I havn't played spinball in five years. For some reason it doesn't work any more. And that was my first actual video game too. I got to the last level when I was six years old.
But regarding the satam game, well I do have to agree that I'm kind of glad it didn't come out. Sonic looks really weird.

From the looks of things, this game probably would have been interesting at first, and after the novelty wore off, would be boring and forgotten. Some things its good they never came out.
Thanks Storm!
Why didn't I think of that?
Good bunnie. Pink Sally. No Antoine.
And was that Muttski?! 0_o
That dog thing next to bunnie IS Antoine. O.o Good god, thouse sprites are terrible. But Like Im the one to talk.
Actually, the dog is supposed to be Muttski.
Are you sure? That look like Antoine to me. But let's not start a fight over something stupid.
It's Muttski.
It's definitely Muttski.
I just noticed Sally wasn't wearing her shoes in that sprite... although that's undoubtedly spriter laziness more than anything else.
I just noticed Sally wasn't wearing her shoes in that sprite... although that's undoubtedly spriter laziness more than anything else.
...Or because they were using earlier character designs in place before the show aired.
I'm pretty sure Pink Sally wasn't barefoot, Erin. She had the same blue boots as always.
But like I said, spriter laziness, nothing more.
...Or they were using earlier early character designs, a design where she may have had no boots. STI was trying to coordinate with both DIC and Archie at the time, trying to coorelate designs, so it wouldn't surprise me that someone messed up, or got lazy.
Heh. Metal Gear Sonic, anyone?
Anyways, sounds like a novelty idea (though it probably would've gotten old fast, if that was pretty much all that the game entailed. And Sonic's supposed to be all about speed, so...).
Had they replaced Sonic for Sally in the gameplay....they may have had something.
Well hopefully sega will relase it on gameboy or DS one day. If not theirs always internet downloads
Man, this would have been a cool game. All the cool SatAM characters, a different set of moves for Sonic, and a blending of the best of both the games and the cartoon. Oh well; these things never work out.
As for that Spike Attack, I think it may be based on that old myth that porcupines can launch their quills. Sonic's a Hedgehog, but it certainly looks interesting. I mean, we've seen Sonic turn into a buzz saw to cut through things and into a wheel to smash through things-why not have him launch his quills at people?
It's a cool idea, but I think people would complain about it slowing down gameplay. It's wierd, though. You can't have extended combat or else you slow down. You keep it simple and people complain. But the spike launch could work in a boss fight.
If it had been completed it would have had a striking resemblence to Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exoddus. Which couldn't work for Sonic but possibly for Sally.
The fact that that video says "Based on the ABC cartoon" makes me feel all giggly inside. As if the game being "Based on the ABC cartoon" would make it fly off the shelves.
Blah, Sonic may as well have been Cool Spot or Bubsy.
"What could possibly go wrong!?"
Dear god, Bubsy had a cartoon?
One whole incredible episode! =D
