A lot of fans are praying for something to change so that there's a reason to like it again - that's why. 😛
*Sigh* Allow me to reiterate;
Fans: "Whaa, Sega, make us a 2D Sonic game just like the old ones!"
Sega: "Okay!"
Fans: "WAT IS DIS. DIS IS JUS' LIKE OLD ONES. YOU LAZY."
I can tell you this; I'd much rather have an HD Sonic Advance (a WONDERFUL series, which stuck to what made Sonic fun in the first place) than another churned out, burned out Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog. No matter how anyone justifies it, post SA2 *SUCKS*.
Hence why fans whine for new, old-school, 2D Sonic.
I don't exactly have a reason for the complaining, tho. I mean, if you don't like it, don't want to buy it, and hate everything about it, why do fans still flock to forums, checking for updates?
Then call it Sonic Advance 4, 5, whatever number they're up to now.
Seriously, what were they expecting when they decided to call it Sonic 4?

what were they expecting when they decided to call it Sonic 4?
Maybe some (albeit, not well-earned) fan-appreciation? (By the way, I didn't know if you changed "Advance" to "the Hedgehog", it changes every single view you have...) All I ever heard people wanting was a continuation of the previous series, or a 2D side-scroller, or a game featuring only Sonic... so Sonic 4 arrives, and it features all of this. It even includes momentum-based physics! ... but, (DUN DUN DUN) a video was released, featuring a game-in-development, and the physics weren't all that great. So what do they do? Delay it! For once! And even scrap an entire level that fans didn't seem to care for!
And if anyone is still complaing about Dimps, let's check their track record, in terms of Sonic... (Scores from IGN, Gamespot)
Sonic Advance - 9.1
Sonic Advance 2 - 9.0
Sonic Advance 3 - 9.0, 8.4
Sonic Rush - 9.0, 8.0
Sonic Rush Adventure - 8.0, 8.0
Compare that with the creator, Yuji Naka, and I think it's obvious that the series is in better hands, now, but that's just my opinion.

As are those scores the opinions of IGN/GS writers. xP But yea...I mean...physics problems/bugs/glitches were apparent in Sonic 2 all over the place. I remember one time...getting stuck in a wall then likke zipping across random places of Chemical Plant until I died. So awkward. I suppose this comes with the development/programming of a 2D Sonic game, huh? Personally, I think if SEGA/Dimps honestly take what they said into serious consideration[something along the lines of Sonic 4 being a continuation of the original 3 games] they will have to pop in those old cartridges and give the older games a go. If it doesn't feel exactly like those, they shouldn't release it. Easy as that. However...with the introduction of the homing attack[which I could totally do without, but it's cool...I liked it in Rush] it'll feel abit different in the air atleast. u_u I'm not passing judgement on this game[even though i'm sure it sounds like it] until i've got it downloaded on my Wii/PS3. Until then...stay hard at work Dimps. ^_^

At least you understand the meaning of the word, haha. You hit the nail right on the head for me, tho. It's pointless, and I'm sure frustrating for the developer, to pass judgment on a title before they've even had a chance for it to release.
Heck yea man! It really doesn't help anyone pointing out every little problem a game still in development has. If anything...it makes matters worse. =X And you're so right about most of us buying this game. LOL It's going to happen. Hopefully there won't be a morning after feeling with this one. 😛
Besides it gets old when my friend and even random people make fun of where Sonic has gone. Bring him back...please bring him back!
And you're so right about most of us buying this game. LOL It's going to happen
maybe we sonic fans should start thinking of keeping that a secret from the sonic games developers
Can't - buying the game gives sales figures...they'd know eventually.
then we should keep it to ourselves until after the game is done they might put more effort into it if they werent so confiedent they have a selling game.

Since when has Sega had to worry about that? Today's kids would buy a used barf bag if it had Sonic's face slapped on it.

You know what Kayla...you're right! I bet it would have value much like that of wine. Closer that barf bag's date is to 1991...the more value it posseses. xP

And that is how you know Sega has damn good marketing department.
Hahaha! Woo hoo! Marketing ftw!

XD that is sooooo true, and i would totally buy a barf bag with sonic's image on it.

A really random addition to the topic, but here's the list of Xbox 360 Achievements in Sonic 4. It will at least give a further glimpse into the game. Personal favorite is the 99 lives achievement.
Personal favorite is the 99 lies achievement.
Because 1 lie is never going to cut it. 😛

Though, I'm sure Sega has that 99 lies achievement on launch day. Buh-ZING!
OH GOD THEY REMEMBERED TAILS ADVENTURE
They better! they had to approve the Tails' Adventure arc for the Sonic Universe comic not too long ago.
OH GOD THEY REMEMBERED TAILS ADVENTURE
You say that like it's a terrible thing.
Uh, something happened to your post, GT, buddy.
Uh, something happened to your post, GT, buddy.
IT WAS DELICIOUS!
or the cache is acting up again?
Nah, if it was the caching, my post wouldn't be showing up either.
*frown*
I was just trying to say I was being excited at the fact that they remembered Tails Adventure.
Oh. I kind of took as it as you thinking Tails Adventure was terrible.
But that's just me over-thinking things. >.>;
TAILS ADVENTURE IS TERRIBLE!!
So ummm...any news of this from TGS? Like a release date, please?
Ya know, as each new piece of info leaks about Sonic 4, the more I lose interest in it. The levels are just renamed, HD versions of the origional genesis levels, and from what Ive seen, there arnt any new badniks. Apart from the homing attack, there arnt any interesting mechanics we havnt seen before either, unless you count the annoying torch in the the labyrinth level. So, I dunno, I know its supposed to be "back to Sonics roots" and all that, but they could've at least made some origional looking levels for pete sakes.
This game's gonna have to have some pretty decent reviews before I shell out the playstation points for it.
...Fortunately I'm head over heels about Sonic Colours. o3o
Actually...if you notice...like...Sonic 1-3D Blast always had similar levels. Like seriously...when I was younger I always confused Green Hill and Emerald Hill. Can you blame me? Personally...i'd be glad to see no torch or homing attack. If anything...these "new" additons will be the reasons I won't like it as much. But that's just me. And yes...Colors[no "u" dangit ] is like...for whatever reason catching my attention alot too.
Casino Street Zone trailer. I don't remember the cards parts in the leak footage. I guess they must be new.
Awesomeness!
Wow. Please tell me this takes place on West Side Island...and South Island.
Wow, total win @ Casino Street. I'm insanely excited, considering Casino Night is my favorite Zone, period. It's nice to see an updated version. As for Episode One, I've kinda' come to terms with the fact that it's more or less an HD update for the originals, to let people get familiar with the classic gameplay. I'm sure the next two will be more unique in their own rights.
Now, release date plz.
Nintendo Power's review of Sonic 4, the bad news is it isn't as good as the Genesis games, but the good news is that it's "worthy" of the 4 in its name. It also confirms the price of 1500 Wii points (aka $15) for it.
I don't mind $15 (1200 MSP) as a price, considering on the 360 you have avatar awards to unlock as well. With 4 zones, 3 acts each, $10 might have been ideal, but with all the work Sega's put into this game, I doubt it would be that cheap. I'll buy it anyways, tho; and anyone who complains about it will too. They just don't want to admit it.
Anyways, it's nice to see a positive review so early. It might not be exactly like the Genesis titles, but it was never supposed to be. Gameplay, technology, and styling have changed in 19 years, and let's face it, that older style just might not work anymore. I'm fine with watching Sonic evolve (2D-wise, anyways), and as long as it evokes that nostalgic feeling, I'm fine with that.
Sonic 4 now has a PRICE and a RELEASE DATE.
iTunes App Store - October 7th
Wii Shop Channel - October 11th, 1500 WiiPoints.
Playstation Network - October 12th, $14.99.
Xbox Live Arcade - October 13th, 1200 MSpoints.
Sorce: IGN.com
A little frustrated about the seperate dates, but it's much sooner than I expected. Time to buy those points cards!
Edit(?): Hate to double-post, but this is news, people!
X box or Wii...Which one shall I go for?
Also would have liked it at 10 bucks but I'll still bite. Maybe not right away...but pretty soon.
still_not_sure_if_want.jpg
Will there be a demo? I'll willing to try before I buy, if it doesn't make me cringe I'll spring for the rest.
Well, according to the NP article it does anything but suck. Anyways, I'm thinking about getting it for the PS3 as it's the only system, console or handheld, that I don't have a Sonic game for.

On the 360 you'll be able to try before you buy. You wont on the PS3. Not sure on Wii.
1200 points? lol, Really Sega?
Well that killed Project Needlemouse off completely for me. I was hoping that it was going to spawn Sonic CD 2 and other games. I mean its bad enough its developed by Dimps but that is just too expensive for an episodic title.
The thing with this is that it started out as "oh god yes" and has now just been reduced to "This is not good".
I mean lets look at everything.
"A project is announced promising "classic" Sonic gameplay in HD".
"They hype up that Sonic will be the only one playable. Yet I still wonder how Shade would play in a 2D Sonic game."
"First shots are shown: Green Eyes Lanky Sonic is shown in a Flash game version of Neo Green Hill Zone from Sonic Advance. Along with Eggman in his Adventure gear."
"Homing Attack confirmed."
"Then it is revealed that this is yet another Dimps/Sonic Team collaboration"
"Whole game is leaked on Youtube. Criticisms include
His eyes are green
His eyelids are blue
Why is this soundtrack so bad?
Why is Sonic able to stand on a steep hill without moving backwards?
Why doesn't the spin attack gain momentum?
Even though this is a new game why are all the environments, bosses and badniks grabbed from old Sonic games?
There is a minecart controlled by the shoulder bumpers
Casino Street second act - the hell?
Why are there so many dash pads?
"
"Game is delayed to impliment improvements to the physics and music apparently."
"Info trickles out. iPhone version"
"Second Act of Casino Street and Lost Labyrinth changed for the HD consoles."
"At Summer of Sonic, it seems to not have changed. Hopes remain that this is just the e3 build."
"Then its announced that we shouldn't expect major changes in the way the game plays."
"1200 MSPoints!"
The thing with this is that it started out as "oh god yes" and has
now just been reduced to "This is not good".
It's 5 extra dollars. 5. 10 + 5 = 15.
Other 1200 points games:
Castlevania: SotN
Castle Crashers
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Trials HD
Limbo
Sonic 4 seems to fit in there in terms of length, gameplay, and graphical style, doesn't it? And after all, none of us have played it yet, so alot of the complaints are invalid. Like the homing attack; how hard will it be to not press a button? The minecart? It was removed (save a small portion).Old bosses/badniks? Well, you did want a classic Sonic game. And honestly, most of them have remained unchanged for years.
Honestly, if it were exactly like the originals, I'd be disappointed. I'd rather have an updated 2D Sonic than something I've been playing for 15 years. We're all entitled to our own opinion, but if you felt so strongly about all of the other 'flaws', then why does the pricing matter? Download the demo first, play it, then complain for all I care. Sega's giving us a 2D Sonic whether you like it or not, and IMO, Dimps is the only developer that's been able to do Sonic justice in the past 10 years anyways.
NEW look Green-eye sonic IS NEVER GOING away, how long will it take for people to see that?
People need to realise that they were aiming to make a Old style feeling GAMEPLAY...the graphics were not on that Agenda.

Of those games the ones I got are Castlevania and Marvel V Capcom 2 and that was when it was at 400 and 560 MSP. And all of those game are whole games. Not episodic. If you really wanna compare it to something try that god awful Penny Arcade game when it was released for 1200MSP.
Its not just the pricing, its the rest of the list.
Also Sumo Digital have done a better job with Sonic in their spin offs than Dimps.

Which I actually addressed in the first paragraph...

Really? Because I remember fans begging for a 2D Sonic game for years, and Dimps has made nothing but 2D titles. Hmmm...

Good for you.

Loved them.
Honestly, it's probably 15 dollars, due to the extra time when it was delayed. If an extra 5 dollars is the major deal breaker, then your issues beforehand weren't apparently that big of a deal.

I'm glad someone else realizes that. Sonic has been updated, and Sega wants to take a positive step forward in the Sonic series, by channeling it's rich history/gameplay. Ignoring the good things that have been added to the series in the past 15 years would be an incredible step backwards.
Exactly - He's not a Decade old fad...he's *THE* Sonic now, and no amount of denial and wrist slapping is changing that.
the Classic Sonic style is just that: classic, but gone - sad, but that's the way it is.
Really? Because I remember fans begging for a 2D Sonic game for years, and Dimps has made nothing but 2D titles. Hmmm...
And yet, a lot of fans begging for 2D Sonic games didn't like the Advance or Rush series. And yet whenever Sumo does its little Sega Superstars stuff it genuinely warms the heart?

Yes. Because pre-rendered gameplay, the retardation of momentum based physics and more realistic looking settings (granted that one has been there since Sonic 3) have been truly been the good things that have happened over the last 15 years. Oh and the Rush button.
Maybe I am being over reactionary. But lets put it this. Maybe if I believed that this was going to follow on from Sonic 3K in terms of gameplay then I wouldn't care what it would look like.
The old robots are back - Well there's only so many times you can redesign a bee styled robot and the modern updates do look cool.
Green Eyes Lanky Sonic - Well thats cheeky, I was really expecting black eyes Sonic. I mean sure in this Aitch Dee age you could just give the eyes a green highlight? But I didn't mind the Adventure redesigns anyway.
Splash Hill looks exactly like Neo Green Hill - Well... Then again Neo Green Hill just looked like Green Hill with more colours anyway.
Homing Attack is in - huh. Well I guess it'll be ok. I mean in Sonic Megamix it didn't seem to break the game that much. Plus this isn't a Sonic 1 hack anyway.
The music seems bad - Well, Thank goodness I can download remixes from the internet.
1200 points - Well gee gillikers Mr Sega. Well, I'll be able to try before I buy and its not like I dont have a job anyway.
But this game really seems to be Sonic Rush without the boost button. I mean this is a sig on Sega boards.
Despite all I have said I want to be wrong on this. I hope that that this turns out to pleasure my retro urge in ways Sonic 1 hacks couldn't do. And I hope that this starts a whole heap of other retro based Sonic projects using that brilliant engine. I mean Sonic CD 2, Knuckes Chaotix 2. stuff like that. Maybe even... http://browse.deviantart....q=classic+blaze#/d2syn9o
But its really not looking that positive and then you get to the presentation, the art and the music. Granted I wasn't expecting a Megaman 9 style game of where Sonic 4 looks exactly like Sonic 3K but at the same time I was expecting Sonic himself to look more like he did in Sonic 3 than he did in Sonic Adventure.
But what can I say I'm a Sonic fan...
