Wow it really bombed. I mean it ranked 4 places below Trauma Center--which supposedly moved 25,000 units.

Poor Viva Pinata though as I heard it was a really good game. Maybe word of mouth will help Viva?

I think the problem with Viva Pinata is the fact its based on a kids cartoon show on a console that isn't really aimed at the kids market.

I'm quite happy for SMB: BB though. I'd doubt that its being promoted as heavily as Sonic The Hedgehog 2K6.

I guess Sega should be thankful that in addtion to SMB:BB success in the U.S., Love and Berry and Ryuu ga Gotoku 2 has been very successful in Japan.

Seems like Bomba the Hedgehog has been a financial disaster for Sega. Maybe it will finally teach them a lesson of not releasing rushed, broken, and buggy Sonic games no matter how popular it is as a franchise.

It's a flop hunh? GOOD! I'm glad no one is buying this insult of a game. Maybe now Sega will realize that they just can't put up some fancy CGI over a crap game and call it a night.

Too bad about Viva Pinata though. I got that for my niece, (at least, that;s the story I'm going with) and I play it more than her. It's suprisingly addictive.

Both Viva Pinata and to a much lesser extent STH360 are on the wrong system. I've actualy seen Viva Pinata commercials by the bucketload and not a single commercial for STH360, but that's because most TV I watch is when I'm with my parents, and Viva Pinata is probably being marketed to parents.

Also, I've seen STH2K6 commercials by the bucketload, but only one Viva Pinata... but then, I tend to sleep in Saturday, so I tend to skip the relevant morning.

^Licensed games has always been successful. I mean you won't believe the crap people bought in the 16-bit era. It's pretty disgusting.

And Viva Pinata's failure also has to do that it is supposedly too complex for young kids despite the colorful and kid-friendly outer shell.

Their must have been some miscommunication in handling the franchise between Rare, MS and 4Kids.

EDIT: Ah wait, Excite Truck moved 39,209 units and that's number 64. So Sonic had to move more thank 40,000. But it's still a bomb given the budget.

Though this means that Trauma Center did decently for Atlus. I need to find a certain NPD thread on a certain site for number guestimation.

still though.. sonic's a bomb moving 40,000 units at $60 (US) each?

Don't forget they have to factor in the advertisng fees and who knows how large the budget was when they got Lacey Chalbert to for a VA in addition to the other means of producing the game. I won't be surprised if this was the most expensive Sonic game they produced.

And moving only 40,000 units of Sega's supoosedly premire on one of the busiest shopping months in the US is not a good sign.

Terrible Sonic games also lack legs after the holiday season. I can see it dropping off the top 100 by January.

*nods*
I can see two outcomes here, no, make that 3.

1. The GOOD outcome - Sega and Sonic Team finally realise what a horrible mistake they have made and actually give us a REAL Sonic game that people actually enjoy.

2. The HMMMM... Outcome - Sega and Sonic Team realise how terrible the game is doing, and decide to put a lid on the Sonic franchise for good.

3. The GODDAMNIT! Outcome - Nothing changes, next year they'll announce Shadow the Hedgehog 2.

I can't see Number 2 happening. People will buy cow poo with Sonic's smiling face on it.

As for number 3, I think the outcry from this game has been much louder than any of the previous Sonic games, so it gets to the point that something has to change.

it would take about 3 more sonic games to suck before sega gives up on sonic. so far the only sonic game i haven't enjoyed is Heroes and yes that meens i enjoyed sonic 2k6

Sega's measure of success is in unit sales rather than level of critical acclaim, so if Sonic '06 fails in that category, then maybe that will make Sega finally realize that all is not well in Sonic World, and maybe then they will give future Sonics the development attention they deserve. Kinda like what happened to Tomb Raider. I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet though. Sonic games don't sell particularily well on the Microsoft consoles. Sales will probably pick up substantially with the PS3 release.

Without a Holiday launch? They'd be lucky to get a repeat of their 360 performance.

It's got a late holiday launch. It still comes out before Christmas...and I have a feeling that last-minute Christmas shoppers will be drawn to it. I hope that doesn't happen...for the first time in my life, I'm rooting for a Sonic title to bomb commercially.

The PS3 version is comming out in Jan. 30 and that version is no better than the 360 one. Infact, I heard it was worse.

Besides, the PS3 doesn't carry the right demographic for this game either. I mean very few parents are going to spend $600 for 7-year old Johnny or Suzie when they can spend $129 for a PS2 or DSLite or $70 for a GBA SP.

The people who are going to buy a PS3 would mainly buy it for Resistance, which is the best selling game for the PS3 and that only moved 77,000 units.

It's coming out in January? Last I heard, it was hitting stores December 20. I swear that's what GameSpot says. I'd better check again...

...Well I'll be darned! It's January 30, 2007! Oh, well... it still won't be any better than the 360 version. And my hopes are up now that it will bomb, since it's missed the holiday window. Then again, Sonic Heroes came out in early January, and that didn't hurt its sales at all.

I edited my previous post.

SH was also the first original Sonic game in awhile, got relatively decent scores compared to Sonic 2K6, and was released on a console that had a sizable 6-12 demograph.

It was also was released when the series was still fairly riding high.

Well I guess Heroes had factors like that working for it. The PS2 and GC were at the point in their lifespans where it didn't really matter when Heroes was released. That, and Heroes had the hype machine working for it...with the media claiming that anyone turned off by SA and SA2 would fall in love with Heroes.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens...

Then again, there isn't the Spanish market that there is over in the US.

You don't know how much I want Sonic Team to get kicked in the nuts by making this game.
The fact that they HAVEN'T learned from the mistakes of Shadow the Hedgehog is just plain DUMB! It's like they're too ignorant to even LISTEN to people, like a kid showing you his sucky drawings, and you're telling him that he needs to get better but he's not even listening, he's just going page after page with the sucky drawings.
That kid needs a good kick in the face, and so does Sonic Team.

*Giggles* I checked Google after reading this and was pleasantly suprised to find that Sonic Rush was #39 on the sales chart for the week ending 16/12/06

Sonic 360 does not rank.

Isn't Pro Evolution Soccer/Winning Eleven supposedly superior?

Yes apparently. But the for people that care about football games the latest FIFA is caching up on the Pro Evo series in terms of gameplay.

I gots me a DS and Sonikku Rushu for my Xmas pressie from my sister and dad. Yes, it does take all the fun out of not knowing what is under the tree.

Well, I'll concede this much: Rush was the first Sonic game in a while that I actually BOTHERED to complete all the way. I swear, the last one was, like, Sonic Advance. The first one. (I dunno, those stages didn't bother me as much as everyone else says they did. The later games' special stages, though... well, I don't think I even got IN those, given the requirements to do just that.)

That is the crappest analogy ever. The only way to improve upon drawing is to keep practicing and practicing by, guess what? Drawing. You don't instantly become much better at drawing from one picture to another.

No, Pachamac was just pointing out what I felt was obvious. Equating what Sonic Team is doing to a kid attempting to learn how to draw makes no sense. A kid can only get better at something by continuing to do something over and over again. Rarely does any artist start off awesome. They start off sucky (or semi-decent for a kid if they're lucky) and then through work possibly get better. No amount of screaming at a kid is going to make the kid get instantly better. The analogy was a bad one regardless of the point that was attempted at being made. Acting as if Pachamac was addressing anything other than the bad analogy is silly.

Thus why I praise Sonic Heroes as an evolution in the right direction, followed by fan complaints and Shadow and STH360. At least the Sonic Heroes team understood that levels should be non-linear and gameplay should be interactive, even if they didn't hold to non-linearity in every level and had lots of bugs in the engine on a game that should probably have had another year of development. Whoever designed STH360 doesn't seem to understand Sonic on any level.

Sonic Team went from okay to worse. Sooooo....it has nothing to do with lack of talent. I'ts more like laziness. So in my opinion the kid and drawing analogy dosen't even fit this.

(@erika-the-ocelot)

The laziness thing would be confirmed by them not removing anything from the Sonic Riders demo, so that by adding a couple of files from the XBox version people from Cult were able to turn it into a full version. 😛
I mean, if you're going to make a demo where only the first level and a few characters are playable, why keep in all the information about other levels or characters? They were just lazy to remove it.
Let's hope low sales will make them realize they need to put some more effort into what they make.

But less mature sonic fans will make their parents buy a new Sonic game regardless. Just like Pokemon. I won't dare say that thats what Sonic Team is banking on.
