Apparently there's a new 'mega collection'-type title planned for release early next year for the PS3 and 360. The title seems pretty self-explanatory, and it's priced at only 29.99. Sega hasn't announced it yet, but I work at the local GameStop here, and it's listed under our upcoming releases. Here's a pic as a source;
If this is anything like what I think it is, it'll be a nice little addition to the PS3 library.
I don't get it. Don't we already have 3 of Genesis games available as downloads? Not to mention the Mega Collection for PS2 and GC.
Also why only the Genesis games?
If this is anything like what I think it is, it'll be a nice little addition to the PS3 library that was already available through the PS2 library... for 10 dollars cheaper.
(and other internet bitterness)
Knuckles Chaotix better be on there. It makes no sense to always be neglected. Can't be because of Mighty's 'controversial' ownership problem.
SEGA owns Mighty. They always have. Why do think he keeps appearing the comics? Every character that made for a Sonic product belong to SEGA.
That, and it's Sonic Genesis Collection. I seriously doubt Knuckles Chaotix is going to be included.
Guess we'll just have to wait for Sonic's Ultimate 32X Collection for that one.
Unless it has some really special extras, like SEGASonic Arcade, and maybe a full back catalogue of Sonic the Comic, then I'll stick to Mega Collection.
And yes, I know how unlikely that demand is, that's just what it'll take. 😛
*hangs head*
Wait, Sonic Bible Adventure? Awesome. Because there was no console called the Genesis. Silly Kotaku.
I've just gave Sega an idea, haven't I? Oh dear...
That, and it's Sonic Genesis Collection. I seriously doubt Knuckles Chaotix is going to be included.
Well, it might be; remember, the 32X official name was the Sega Genesis 32X so Chaotix could still be on it.
I doubt it would be strictly just the Genesis games. If it was, then it would have less content than the average Mega Collection or Gems, due to the inclusion of all of the Game Gear stuff.
Plus, both collections had non-Sonic games on them, so the chances of answering fanboy dreams of Chaotix is within the realms of mayhapossibility, but not really.
Still... the only games before Adventure without a current (and bargain priced) adaption now are Chaotix, Eraser, the Pico games and Saturn-Sonic 3d.
Given that the Pico games hardly count, that means we only have two games which aren't collected before the Adventure games.
So, hey. If this thing is going to be worth the price it costs to print the disc, they may aswell try to put one of them on there. Otherwise... what's the point.
I...don't get why they'd release another selection of the same games, over and over - they've hawked them online to all consoles, had remakes on the GBA of Sonic 1, the Gems/Treasure collections on PS2/Cube/PC, and god knows what else...>>;;;
Distracting us with the past isn't good enough anymore - either something fresh and original is on there too, or this is gonna be another disaster zone in the making..Seriously - who really needs the whole collection NOW who wouldn't have owned it on the PS2 or the Cube beforehand?
Madness! XD
Me. I get tired of pulling my Saturn out to play 3d Blast(I do it for this Sailor Moon fighting game, but not for Sonic, blasphemous I know.)
MORE LIKE SONIC ULTIMATE REDUNDANT COLLECTION AMIRITE. But they could include cd and chaotix since the cd and 32x were genesis add ons.
Not to mention Sonic 1 coming to cell phones, iPods, microwaves, refrigerators. >_>
But yea is Knuckles Chaotix is on here...i'll pick it up[eventually]otherwise, Sega should go jump off of NoJ HQ.
SegaSonic would be pretty awesome too, but I really don't like the chances.
And I wonder why this isn't coming out on the Wii? You can download most of the Sonic games on the Virtual Console from XBox Live, can't you?

Effectively meaning that if this was a compilation disc, it should be renamed "Sega does not understand how digital distribution is supposed to work". Kind of dumb having a download version of a game on the same console you can buy the entire series for a fraction of the cost.
And I wonder why this isn't coming out on the Wii? You can download most of the Sonic games on the Virtual Console....
You just answered your own question. Also, only Sonic 1 & 2 is available for XBLA.
Sega cashes in with the nostalgia userbase, yet again, but this time they are going for the Achivement and Trophy whores!
I think sega lost all it's good employees sometime between the making of the sega cd and sonic heroes. that is the only reason they keep making these poor buisness choices,
Is it really that poor of a business choice if people keep buying their crap?
I eagerly await Sonic's Orgasmic Genesis Collection for the PS4 and Xbox 720. I mean what word is better than "Ultimate"?
Mind you there has to be something in this collection to make it "Ultimate". Playable Chaotix would kinda make sense. A decent emulation of Sonic CD with both soundtracks would be even better!
And there needs to be an achievement for completing Carnival Night Zone act 2 as Sonic. Actually as soon as you clear "that" area in Carnival Night Zone act 2.
It could be worse though. They could charge £30 for warmed over SNES games ports for your handheld console.

Is that supposed to be a not-so-subtle slam against Kirby Ultra Star, a remake of the best damn Kirby game that has yet to be topped? <>

I hate that guy he is such a +%+%.

Is that a subtle slam against the pizza hut pzone which is yours alone for five ninety nine or two for ten ninety nine including toppings like classic, meaty, or pepperoni?
No. No, it is not.
The name suggests possession with it being Sonic's Ultimate.... So, maybe this is a collection of awesome Genesis titles brought to you by.... Sonic. So, not just his own games but a lot of Genesis games. As someone said before, I also suspect 3D Blast to be part of this collection.
As in, Saturn version? The Genesis version was on Mega Collection, but the Saturn version would be cool.
It would be cool to have an ultimate Genesis collection. RKA, Gunstar Heroes, Echo, Bubba 'N' Stix (that was a port, tho, so maybe not), Dynamite Headdy, Earthworm Jim, hell, if they could get Disney in on it, there was several excellent Disney games on there, like Quackshot, Mickey Mania, Aladdin, Pocahontas, etc.
Also I'd lol if that's the true meaning of "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection". Sly dogs, the lot of them.
You know those games wont be on a single disc due to licensing, though. Ignoring the Disney stuff, the other games are all from different companies. The amount of times the pie would be sliced would make it unworkable for all parties. Especially when they could sell their one game from the collection stand-alone online and get a better profit.
Even if it was a collection of several different Genesis games, there still was a Sega Genesis Collection already on the PS2 (and PSP)
As in, Saturn version? The Genesis version was on Mega Collection, but the Saturn version would be cool.
I meant the Genesis version, but I didn't know it was on Mega Collection already. If they included the Saturn version (with reduced load time) on Ultimate that would be sweet indeed.
It does seem redundant to release another Sonic collection, but unless I'm mistaken I don't believe there are any collections on the current generation of systems. That may be reason alone to warrant a Sonic collection in Sega's eyes even with the downloadable Genesis games already out there. This would be similar to releasing the Rock Band Track Packs for people who don't play games online.
Yeah, but the 360, Wii, and the older PS3s all have backwards compatibility with the Mega Collections for the last gen systems; so whether people have online or not it shouldn't be impossible for them to have the older compilations.
I keep buying these Sonic collections (like an idiot), hoping against all odds that one will unseat Sonic Jam as the best of the compilations. To me, it hasn't yet happened. Though, Gems Collection would have been pretty smexy with a Sonic World.

Agreed. I'm just trying to find all, or atleast some, of the reasons for re-re-re-releasing the classics. Like I said, I'm confident it's a collection of Sega games not only restricted to the Sonic series.

Same here, although I did not pick up Mega Collection Plus (hence my lack of knowledge that Blast was in it). I too eagerly await a smexy Sonic World for the current times.
Looks like the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection has become the Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection.

Impressive list. Yay Streets of Rage trilogy .
Edit- Sega Nerds has video and press released.
...and the lock-ons still aren't mentioned. They better not mess that up.
I simply scrolled down to see if Vectorman was on the list?
... I was pleased.
They should just rename it "Craig's fondest childhood memory collection" or "At last, a collection with Streets of Rage on it"
I am slightly bitter I saved for an entire year to own any single game on that list, but sod it, I loved Alex Kidd on the Genesis, I still love SoR, playing Bonanza Bros was a true treat and Tricia would love to force me to play Shining Force.
Consider this a sale.
Though, they're very cheeky, as it's more or less the same as the PS2/PSP release last year.
Oh.
And *sticks middle finger up at Dynamite 'Eddy*
That's for hurting me.
Dynamite Headdy is good times. I would've loved to play the japanese original since if you check out Hardcore Gaming 101's article on it, they made huge changes to the design for the western release.
Not a bad list of games there. The only one I would've liked to see that isn't on there is Soleil/Crusader of Centy. It was my first RPG, and I still have fond memories of it. I admit I only rented it out because it had Sonic the hedgehog make a cameo appearance. Whether or not the game was good I honestly don't know anymore. It seemed to rip off Zelda more than a litte bit.
..........Nope. List is garbage. It's missing 3 games.
X-Men.
X-Men 2 Clone Wars.
Zoop.
Then, and only then, would it completely rule.
Oh and yeah any goddanged peripherial game too. (Chaotix/CD come to mind immediately.)
Oh wow! That list is awesome! Talk about cramming though, how many games is that? Like 30? I wonder will there be bonus stuff? Christmas/birthday present for my not so big Sega fan friends. 😛 I might even pick this up...maybe. >_>
While seeing the simply amazing Shining Force II on there (Which, by the way, I rank as my greatest game, ever!) fills my heart with a glee that could never be matched, even if Heavy and Bomb were confirmed to get their own game, I must admit my curiousity is getting the better of me.
If Sega were able to get Dynamite Headdy from Treasure for this collection, what about Gunstar Heroes? Seriously guys, you can't have an ultimate Mega Drive collection without Gunstar Heroes. Or Quackshot for that matter. Not to mention Chakan. Or hey, Sega, how about some Wonderboy or Fantasy Zone love? And what's with not announcing the Lock-On games from the get go? If we have to unlock those ala Mega Collection, and not have them available from the get go like Jam, that will just be plain old silly. Also, the Master System games better include both Phantasy Star and Psycho Fox! Heck, while I'm on my rant, chuck Art Alive on there for the laughs!
And for a few more, Boogerman, Bubsy, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Castle Of Illusion Staring Mickey Mouse, World Of Illusion Starring Mickey and Donald, Clayfighter, Cool Spot, Earthworm Jim, Landstalker, NBA Jam, Outrun, Smash TV, Primal Rage, Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster, Space Harrier, Hang-On, Shadow Dancer or some mother-funkin' Toejam And Earl (How could they miss this one? Seriously?).
...Yes, I'm fully aware that so many of those games could not appear on the collection due to the sheer hassle of obtaining licenses for them all, but a man can dream, can he not?
Mmmmm that is a mighty tasty list. I don't think I have a single complaint about it, which is rare.
I agree it would be to see 32x games and some CD games on there, but I'm perfectly OK with the line-up considering we'll be paying less than one dollar for each game with the collection costing $30. That's a steal!
Of course, there are a few of these on the arcades already, but bear in mind that these games have been "reproduced with the utmost detail and accuracy to commend their originals" as well as being able to output the titles in 720p with higher resolution graphics.
Buh?
I am down with this. They got me at the Golden Axe and Streets of Rage series. I'm crossing my fingers that the sound emulation doesn't suck, though Gems Collection gave me hope.

According to Sega, HD = crappy emulation filters!
bleh...
EDIT: Also, can someone name the games that isn't available on the Virtual Console/XBLA/PSN, PSP/PS2 Genesis Collections, or Sonic Mega Collection/+?

I don't really feel like browsing through all the downloadable games, but I did a quick comparison between this collection and the previous Genesis collection and the Sonic Mega Collections. Keep in mind there are still more games in this collection to be announced, so there's bound to be more. There were also unlockable arcade games in the original collection that I didn't include here because there's nothing to compare them to.
These are the games in this collection that did not appear in Sega Genesis Collection or Sonic Mega Collection:
Alien Storm
Beyond Oasis
Dynamite Headdy
E-SWAT
Fatal Labyrinth
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
These are the games that won't appear in this collection that were in Sega Genesis Collection:
Ecco Jr.
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
Sword of Vermilion
Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis/MegaDrive version)
You know what game would make this collection amazing? Zero Tolerance.
