Ah, back when Tails was 'fatter'.

I loved Tails' personality in some of the early tie-in stuff - the choose-your-own-adventure books and the likes, before he became such a 2D "Sonic, I can do it if I really try!" character. At least he's always been written pretty consistently in Archie.

the choose-your-own-adventure books

I remember those - how if you'd turn all of the pages really quickly, you'd see Sonic at the top of the pages running very quickly. Also, I absolutely LOVED it when Sonic broke the fourth wall in those books. Badass!

I wish I had gotten into the comic/books and stuff. I only know from the games and the TV show. He rocked in the TV Show.

I miss how cute and childlike Tails used to be. Now they ruined him by making him into a boring character that doesn't act like his age at all. Chip is more "Tails-like" than the fox we have now.

But... they didn't really talk much in the old games, so I don't see how you can infer him being childlike.

They just sort of saved the world and he tagged along getting hurt (possibly humourously, depending on who you are.)

I agree he doesn't act his age at all, though I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I think he's one of the more mature characters in the series, if not the most mature. I remember him being a "Sonic, I can do it if I really try!"character in Sonic Adventure, though I don't think that was only thing he had going for him. Hell, he didn't even act that way until Eggman was about to detonate that bomb. Before then, he was acting as Sonic`s friend during the time he was with him and did just fine without him, even getting a Chaos Emerald on his own IIRC. It was just when that "OH SHI-" moment with Eggman felt like more than he could handle, I geuss. After that game I don't really remember him wanting or needing Sonic to bail him out.

<<I think he's one of the more mature characters in the series, if not the most mature.>>

Which, in effect, made him the dullest "live" character in the series. It seems pointless to have him as an 8 year old since there is hardly in hint of his personality we have now that indicates he has any child-like behavior.

Not if you take into account those books. Where Tails was really clingy and annoying XD At least in the one I read he was. The very youngest I set Tails to be is 12 years old. There's just no way in Hades he's 8.

He probably was back during the 16-bit era. Hell, he looked like a baby back then!

But Sega didn't age him up. He's still 8. Maybe they forgot or are too lazy to realize this.

...you know what? Cream's pretty mature, too.

WHY ARE THE YOUNGEST CHARACTERS THE MOST MATURE.

Also I like it when Kids don't act their age, I find it refreshing after seeing so many annoying, mischevious younger siblings in certain shows.

...Though we do have Charmy.

And Chip, I suppose... but he acts less like the younger sibling type since he's hyperactive, but not too hyperactive and he's a bit more focused.

Sonic characters never age, just like the the Simpsons characters. It's why Sonic the Werehog's profile in Sonic Channel is listed as being 15. An exception is Amy's retcon aging from 8 to 12.

If the Simpsons characters aged in real time, then Bart would be about 30 years old now.

Marine the Raccoon's another exception to that, CT. Her profile at Sonic Channel places her at 7, and she really comes off as annoying and childish most of the time.

Cream doesn't act all that mature either. She's still a six-year old, and while she is very polite, she still manages to be a kid.

The only reason I see Tails acting so "old" is because he's a child genius. Sega decided to make him act much older than he already is, so he's not really a kid, but he's not even a teenager, either. Just... stuck. Although in Unleashed, he does need some help in dealing with those Dark Gaia creatures, because for once he didn't have anything handy to help him.

In Chip's case, he was just the non-intelligent sidekick replacement, complete with an appetite for and a magic pocket for his secret stash of chocolate. Oh, and don't forget his Mohawk.

But you can still have a "child genius" stock character acting their own age in fiction. Case in point:

Also see his equally immature rival, Mandark.

Wasn't Sonic originally 16, iirc.

Sonic Jam had his age listed as 15~16. So I guess the they just stuck with him being the former.

To be fair, I actually somewhat LIKE Tails' current personality- sure, the Captain Obvious bit could use a little work, but the whole 'got to move out from Sonic's shadow and find his OWN way to shine' is a great way to go for the character, and really does more with him than just making him the ubiquitous second player character like what's always happened to poor Luigi.

I'll admit, they really DO need to HANDLE it better, but the direction itself isn't really all that bad.

As for Tails being more mature than your average 8-year-old... well, SOMEone has to keep Sonic and Knuckles from killing each other, and Amy'd just turn it into a bloodbath, so that leaves Tails. Obviously, his role as peacemaker means he, by definition, has to be more mature than the other two.

As Tails' #1 fan, even I have to admit that his personality was a bit annoying in the 3-D games. But as for the comics, I just love it. The boy genius thing really works for him. His personality has actually changed over the years, going from a clingy artist (OMG remember that!? Tails was an ARTIST once! NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD!!!), to the adventurous gearhead he is now. Some aspects of his true age shine through, but he does act mature for his age.

Yeah, the whole Tails being an 8 year old genius just wierds me out for some reason...

You know how Sonic thinks of Tails (at least in the comics) as being his best buddy, well someone I knew said that Sonic is a creeper for thinkink of an 8 year old as his best bud.

Tails is a bit older in the comics, Socks. Regardless, age shouldn't make a difference. I kind of figured who ever said Sonic was a "creeper" for hanging out with an 8-year old probably was surfing among the backwaters of the internet.

Tails is rated the number 1 most annoying sidekick beyond Slippy. Ten years ago, this would not have been the case. In fact, Tails was more likely one of gaming's most beloved sidekicks.

New Tails = Fail

I've never played it.

And although I consider Sonic Unleashed to be the most decent 3D game I've played since SA2, the combat crap was sort of enjoyable but still ineffectively executed. Tails was just wallpaper in that game. Chip was the real sidekick.

Exactly. Secret Rings is a fail already. The thing is that Wii is made for games where the experience of playing them would be enhanced. Such as those Wario spin-off games. When they were on the Gameboy, yeah, they were OK. But I imagine they were far better on the Wii because it actually required movement. But Sonic is just the kind of game that doesnt require movement. Sega just made it because they wanted a game primarily for the "new, cool system" you know?

Well I actually never played the games...lol

One thing I found interesting about SatBK is that each character resembles a Sonic character. Except for the -Ones.

Lancelot = Shadow
The Black Knight = Eggman maybe? I wouldn't see the resemblance, just that they're both villains >.<<br /> Gawain = Knuckles
Percival = Blaze
Blacksmith = Tails
Galahad = Silver
Lamarak = WOW, Jet the Hawk? You're kidding me...

I tend to think Eggman's been reduced to the Goldfish Poop Gang. Or something close to it.

yeah, in some of the games he summons spirits like Dark Gaia to do his dirty work for him.
