i decided to create this discussion to find out exactly what sonic fans besides myself expect from the game series. when i play a sonic game I'm mostly looking at the story and character interactions but game play is important so i choose sonic adventure 2, i think the game play was right on the money and the story was just excellent in my eye's. i would say sonic unleashed but the were hog seemed unnecessary though i thought the game play for was excellent.

My favorite is Sonic 2. It's full of nostalgia for me and I really appreciate how many levels they included. Plus the special stages are classic and also pretty difficult. I also love playing as Sonic (as opposed to Super Sonic) in the last level.

I still think Sonic Adventure takes the cake as far as the 3D games go.

2D wise, it's a tie between Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 2 (8-bit). And before anyone gets shocked, the 8-bit Sonic 2 holds a special place in my heart because not only was it the first Sonic game I ever played, but it was also my first video game since my parents' 2600 died.

3D wise, Sonic Adventure hands down.

Though, I believe I'm one of the few people who enjoys Sonic Shuffle.

I had a very long run on Sonic Rush which makes it one of my favorite games of all time. I doubt such intensity and speed could be emulated on any other Sonic game. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for the time attack aspects it's an absoloute classic.

Sonic Adventure 1 is my favorite of the 3d games, if only for the loose character controls which feels more fluid than the stiff and clunky sequel (E-102 >>>> Egg Mobile/Cyclone), though I'll freely admit that SA2's rank system offers a deeper variety of gameplay experience, I just favor the controls and level design of the original.

Also: Oligatory "S3&K = God" hype-up. For it deserves it's reputation.

My absolute all time favorite Sonic games is Sonic Adventure. Just the story and the gameplay was awesome! I'm probably one of the few people that has played Sonic since the 2D era and like a 3D game over a 2D one.

Overall, my favorite will have to be Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic CD and Sonic 2 are a very close second.

And Sailor Rose Dust, I love Sonic Shuffle as well. Sonic R too.

S3&K and Sonic Adventure are my top two Sonic games, I'd say they're two of my all time favourite games too, along with Shenmue, SMB3, MGS, and FFVII.

I haven't liked a home console Sonic game since SA2 but I still feel tempted by the series.

If the next Sonic game somehow manages to include the entire Sonic the Comic series then that'd be enough to get me to buy it.

Since I did not had the privilege of owning a Dreamcast or a Gamecube, my favorite 3D Sonic game would have to be Unleashed, especially the daytime stages, the way 360 should have been. I cannot give an opinion on something that I have not tried yet.

As for 2D, it's Sonic 3 & Knuckles with no doubt whatsoever. My runner ups are the following:

Knuckles Chaotix --> I like the rubber band ring pairing. It was very unique.
Sonic Advance 3 --> The idea of choosing your own partner, causing your character to change was something I enjoyed.
Sonic 2 --> The first game where you have a partner (Tails)
Sonic CD --> I always like the concept of time travels and the consequences of your past actions.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) --> It's the original, I can't say much.

Sonic Adventure. No competition. Shame none of the other 3D games tried to build on it, and instead just thought up new crazy concepts like Werehogs.

Also, Sonic Shuffle > Mario Party any day.

Sonic 2 on the Genesis takes the cake, though I'll freely admit it's mostly due to the nostalgia factor- it was my first Sonic game, after all!

Heck, I used to have Emerald Hill Zone as my ringtone- and the only reason it isn't anymore is because my old cell phone died, and I have yet to get around to replacing the lame ringtones on my new one.

If we're talking which game I have to say is CRITICALLY best, well, I'll have to say for 2D, it's a three-way tie between the Rush miniseries and S3&K, and for 3D, definitely the original Sonic Adventure.

Oh, and I'll continue the Sonic Shuffle love. Too bad my copy bit the dust before I could finish the game- and worse yet, NEITHER of the two copies I've bought SINCE then have worked, either!

I've never played Shuffle before. But dammit, y'all are tempting me to rent it and dust off my good ol' Dreamcast just to see what it's like. I guess it's also due to morbid curiosity on my part too.

Game Gear: Sonic Chaos
Genesis: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sega CD: Sonic CD (it was the ONLY Sonic game for the Sega CD, but I do love it!)
Sega 32X: Knuckles Chaotix (again, the ONLY Sonic game for the 32X, but I played it on GameTap a couple of times, and hated it, actually)
Saturn: Sonic 3D Blast (love the music in the Saturn version!)
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure
Nintendo GameCube: Gotta give it to Sonic Adventure DX, though Sonic Heroes is close.
XBOX 360: Sonic '06 (haven't played Unleashed yet, and I'll say it, I didn't think Sonic '06 was a bad game at all. It had flaws, sure, but as far as game play and especially that incredible soundtrack goes, I really like that game)
Wii: Don't have a Wii, so I couldn't tell ya, lol

Favourite Sonic game so far? Probably Sonic 2.

Sonic CD has the most annoying jump sound ever and the spin dash isn't instant. I'd kill for a hack that fixed those two things!
Sonic 3K is two games having virtual sex together.
Sonic 1 is still good but Sonic 2 is better.

Favourite 3D game: Its either Adventure 1 or Adventure 2. Adventure 1 really hasn't aged well and Adventure 2 didn't better Adventure 1 in every which way when it came out. But Cosmic Wall was awesome.

Heroes was too flawed.
Shadow was kinda fun but very wrong.
Sonic 2K6 is just no. No.
Unleashed is kinda good. But the whole game is flawed. Daytime is too stupidly fast and its not user friendly with its pit o death. Night time is My first God of War, kinda fun but no.
(I haven't played Secret Rings)

Handheld: Either Sonic Triple Trouble or Sonic Rush Adventure. Sonic Rush Adventure was much nicer and kinder to my skin than Sonic Rush which burned. Oh it burned. And Sonic TT is a little handheld vision of Sonic CD without the time travel stuff.

Very hard to say...but 2D goes to Sonic 3[the complete Sonic 3 btw...yes this includes & Knuckles]. Sonic 2 was my first one though, and i've got to say it surely does bring back memories. Sonic 3 still trumps it though. I still need to play Sonic CD extensively though...As far as 3D...I really want to say SA2[storyline and character interaction was fantastic], but SA just had that mad first time fully blown 3D adventure feel. So 3D...Sonic Adventure.

wow..... idk what to say, i mean most of you like SA and sonic2 but let's see what you don't like in a sonic game. for me in 3D games i would say messy camera angles and late reaction time like with secret rings though i lived the speed

2D, either Sonic 2 or Sonic Spinball, both for nostalgic reasons. Oh, the many hours I wasted with my brother on both those games ^^

3D, I'm gonna have to go with Sonic Adventure 2. 1 was great, but I never had the opportunity to play it when it came out, as my only exposure to it was on the Gamecube, where SA2 came out first. And again, everything about that game screams nostalgia at my face and takes me back to some of the best years of my life.

As for what I don't like in Sonic Games, well. I'm not a big fan of lots and lots of one-off characters. I'm also not a big fan of plots larger than "defeat Robotnik, for he is destroying the world!" :p
