Take a look at Hydrocity Zone. In the eyecatcher picture, there is grassy foliage. However, in the big picture above taken from the actual game, THERE IS NO GRASSY FOLIAGE AT ALL. No trace of anything green, no highly detailed palm leaves, nothing but water and bricks. Man, they sure are horrible at this.
All of the zone eyecatcher pictures are like this as well in many of the Sonic games. If they didn't do such a horrible job, maybe I might of said that there was a pattern we could of looked into. From what I understand is that we shouldn't bother, am I right?
They're probably mock-ups. Like the Dust Hill image that showed up in one magazine, but was never actually coded.
Could also be from an alpha or a beta.
I'll cry foul there. Except for Hydrocity, all the other zone eyecathers seem pretty darn accurate. And even in Hydrocity, it seems as if they brightened the green in the zone preview icon just a bit as opposed to the level where the water in the background is more of a teal color.
I think the more pressing issue here is that screen capture is using Sonic 2 sprites >_>

The hell are you saying, man, there's green right there. Right freaking there. Where did you get that big screenshot?
Yeah, you can see that it's a bunch of leaves if you look hard enough. Not as bright as in the little icon, but still green.
Actually now that Mattmaniac and TTG pointed it out, just where did you get the screenshot? I'm playing Hydrocity and the green is nowhere near as bright, or even looks like leaves. And that's a Sonic 2 sprite...wth mates?
Could also be from an alpha or a beta.
That's why. There's plenty of early build screen shots of Sonic 2 Sonic in Sonic 3 levels, like showing him running down the mountain at the start of Ice Cap (or was that an actual Sonic 3 sprite? I forget).
Could just be, ya know, a sample of what the bulk of the level is like...doesn't need to be 100% for that.
ITT: People who don't get the ironic joke.
Hidden Palace Zone? o.o
*sigh* Well maybe you should explain your clever wit to us humorless cattle. Unless you were trying to be all postmodern or something.
Is it that they DID do a good job on the icons...? <__<
1) Beta screenshot of Sonic 3, among other things, reveals foliage in the background.
2) Sonic 3 Final, as everyone knows, does not.
3) Zone select pic still has what appears to be foliage in its background.
4) GT implying that the other Zone pics could potentially reveal Beta details.
5) Sets up his own thread for derailment by calling pic an "eyecatcher".
Oh ok.
GT. I command you to bring all other Zone Eyecatchers to this topic.
Thank you Psx.
By doing a quick search at Mystical Forest Zone's sprite section, I found Sonic 2's zone icons. (better name?)
Much better.
What, no Hidden Palace icon? Granted, I'm only aware of it appearing in Sonic 3's Stage Select...
EDIT:
I can't for the life of me get into Sonic 3's Stage Select. =

I can sympathize. I think I've only managed to do it once. S3&K's Stage Select is a lot easier to get into.
I've got it down to a science. Key is to follow Sonic's movement on the screen prior to the proper title screen frame-by-frame, to the millisecond, making sure the last input makes it in before the screen goes white. The span between the 2nd and 3rd is the trickiest, and the part most people seem to fudge, as it takes a little more time for your thumb (presumably the left) to go from the top of the D-pad to the bottom, which tends to ruin the timing. Holding the controller so you can use both thumbs to input the code works much better.
I would just use the vine cheat.
No such thing in Sonic 3 alone, pal.
Listening to that song, it's amazing it took us as long as it did to figure out Michael Jackson was involved.
Not saying to be cool, though it does make me cool, I totally thought that it did sound like Michael Jackson; the whole time.
what are you some kind of cool man
A certain site that we all know where now has them, at least S3&K.
Why are there two Flying Battery icons? Was that first one hidden in Sonic 3 somewhere?
Well, Flying Battery was originally supposed to be between Carnival Night and Ice Cap, right? Like, the door Sonic busted through was supposed to act as the snowboard at the beginning of the next level or something like that?
Yeah, I remember reading that on several websites. The same sources suggest that the 'Flying Battery > Ice Cap' transition was later adopted for the intro to Sonic Adventure 2's Hero story (I could potentially be crowned the new King of Stating-The-Obvious through stating that.)
I've just noticed that all these zone preview screens are chibified versions of the zones. Look at the giant balloons in Carnival Night and the short squat palmtrees in Angel Island. lol, I'd like to see a Chibified remake of these games in the style of 'Mega Man Powered Up' for the PSP.
I know there was a trainer program long ago that edited S&K Collection. One of the things you could do was set a Sonic 3 alone save to "Flying Battery" as an option. Going back into the game gives surprisingly that inside picture.
