Forgotten doesn't equal unused. If a character was never used, they can't be classified as forgotten.
If unused creations became the standard for being forgotten, then I'm sure there are hundreds that people will never know. That's not what most people mean when they talk about forgotten characters. Forgotten characters are those that were playable or had a role in a prior game and either not used again or not used recently.
I still say Metal Sonic, Metal Knuckles, and Tails Doll would've made a nice unlockable team in Sonic Heroes.
In response to the topic title, I'll ressurect an old rant of mine.
Knuckles IS still guarding the Master Emerald. He's just doing so a little more aggresively. It's like he's decided to head off all potential threats LOOOOONG before they reach Angel Island. Kind of a "Punch first, ask questions later" tactic, which, in my opinion, is COMPLETELY within Knux's character.
And besides this fact, it is'nt as if he's gone from it every day. Just the days where something big is going down, whether it be Eggman, Black Doom, or some other threat.

Not exactly. We don't know what happened to Chaos and Tikal after SA1; they could be ageless and just hang out with the Master Emerald, or they could be in another dimension, untouchable forever. SA1 was vague about it.
Also, there's a difference between Knuckles pre-emptively attacking Eggman or Black Doom, and hanging out in cool new pinball parlours or participating in air board races.
Maybe his new startegy is so effective it affords him more free time.

Well the thing is, we don't know how many days, weeks, months, years have passed since Sonic 1. If we base it on how old Sonic is since Sonic 1 when he was 16, in Sonic Heroes he was 15. So that doesn't help. So since Sonic 3 and Knuckles he might have only spent about a week guarding the damn thing.
well, let's see... there's Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, SOnic Battle, and others, and, in-game, they take place over almost a week each.
Of course, whatever system Knuckles has going on, I think it's safe to say the he knows what the heck he's doing.a

There's a difference between gullible and sttupid. Don't forget all of those traps he has installed on Angel Island(S3&K, anyone?). I don't think they built themselves...
