1. Sonic 2 for the GG. Never before have I been more upset at a sonic game's difficulty...I couldn't get past the 1st boss cuz the game sucked that much...NOT TO MENTION THE CHAOS EMERALDS WERE a CHORE TO FIND...

2. Sonic Labyrinth: Soooo...slooooooow....OOOOOOYY...THINKK...I... NEEED...a ...boossst...

3. G-Sonic: The graphics were nice, but it otherwise sucked...

I though G-Sonic's graphics were as ugly as the rest of the game. cheap pre-rendering ftl!

I agree that Sonic Labyrinth was terrible also.

Sonic Labyrinth used to be tops, but it's only a VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY close second to G-Sonic, which I still consider to be one of the worst Sonic games ever created.

Sonic Labyrinth has a hell of a lot wrong with it (slow, boring, and stupid as sin), but at least the music is mediocre at best and the graphics are clean and viewable. G-Sonic is utterly unplayable. The Special Stages are aborted monkified versions of S3&K's stages with no originality, challenge, or much difference in design, The main game has unresponsive controls so clunky that they feel neutered and stiff in comparison, Sonic's speed actually gets in the WAY of clearing obstacle, enemies are few and far between along with being awkwardly placed in the stage making it so you can't run much, it's terribly slow, the music is OK at best doesn't stand up well to previous GG titles, decent stage design is nonexistent, the graphics are so terrible that often you have no idea what what certain things are (like those things on bridges that are supposed to be spikes but instead look like sticks with giant BALLS on them), and just like Sonic 2 GG: THERE IS AN SINGLE STAGE DEDICATED ENTIRELY TO WARP TUBES BUT THIS TIME IT MANAGES TO BE UGLIER THAN THE FIRST.

It was a cheap attempt to mimic Donkey Kong Country's graphical success....ON A PORTABLE EQUIVALENT OF THE MASTER SYSTEM. What the hell?

It is a handheld digital abortion of the utmost caliber that needs to wash away in the sea never to return.

SIDE NOTE: Funny thing about the S2 GG first boss. EVERYONE used to have trouble with that. It was the Carnival Night barrel of the GG for the longest time until people gradually realized that the only way to beat it was to let it damage itself. After you finish, all you can do is sit there, stare at it, ask yourself "What in the #%$@ was the point of that ^%#$?" and then scream as the next stage consisted of asinine hangliding segments (and if you were still dedicated to it through your own stupidity) the infamous WARP TUBES FROM HELL level that Sega seemed to think was such a fun idea for GG Sonic games back in the day.

Ugh.

Don't kid yourselves, guys. They're all bad. You shouldn't have to settle for less than what 16-bit Sonic 1 achieved. Some of them may have had one or two things that made them stand out when compared to other Sonic games (like their portability, for one) but there's no mistaking that they were Sega's first attempts at milking the franchise by crapping out uninspired and underperforming clones for a platform that wasn't up to the task.

Rant over. Bring on the hate.

Totally agreed, but I like Triple Trouble more than Sonic 1. I'm just not into it, despite it being my first sonic game.

I enjoyed Sonic and Tails 2/Triple Trouble quite a bit. That one wasn't bad at all. The game play bit was more puzzeling than the others and it had cute little graphics for the levels. The others never entertained me though.

Psx I can no longer love you. =(

Sonic 1 for GG/MS was an awesome game. :D Jungle Zone ftw, and the storming of Eggman's blimp whilst dodging lightning strikes and cannonshots was fantastic.

You no longer win, good sir!

(Although I agree that the rest were s**t)

Hey, I like Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble. They were a lot more tolerable than Sonic 2.

See, Dub, you aren't quite on the mark with the Sonic 2 comment... Even when you're fully aware of the whole "let the bombs hit him" thing, it's still really hard. See, in the case of the Master System original, there was a lot of viewing space with which you could figure out the location of the bombs before they hit. Not to mention, the bombs always fell in a uniform manner. The GG version, however, decreased the viewing area significantly, drastically reducing the amount of room you had to get around the bombs, and also varied the way the bombs fell, meaning the whole fight was unpredictable - and it only took one slightly wrong prediction to force you to start the whole fight over. On the Master System, the fight is easy. On the Game Gear, it's nearly impossible.

The problem with Sonic 2, I think, is that it was tailored for the Master System and, when it was ported to the Game Gear, the people doing the port job didn't do a very good job - at all - with quality insurance, making sure that the game was relatively easy to beat, thus resulting in what may be the world's least forgiving first boss.

Being the resident raised on Game Gear I am offended by the title. =(

Sonic 1 GG, strangely I never owned but played it on Mega Collection. Can be itimidating but not as much as Sonic 2.

Yes, Sonic 2 GG is one of the hardest games around and many people give up after the first boss. But that's its charm.

To counteract that, Sonic Chaos was made. The trouble is people can breeze through it in like 10 to 15 minutes. Thus, Triple Trouble was made. Sure it still wasn't as hard as Sonic 2, but it still pushed the game gear to its limits since being not confined to the Master System.

Sonic Labyrinth I know isn't the best in the bunch but I did enjoy its music, especially the boss and final boss.

G Sonic/Sonic Blast...Also didn't own but played it on Mega Collection. They tried to hard on graphics (and to be like Donkey Kong Country) and not on gameplay. I do commend them for making Knuckles playable and bringing back Dr. Robotnik/Eggman as the regular level boss, although I do love his boss robots to death.

Tails Adventure I didn't own but Mega Collection as well. Great game even though at parts I didn't know what to do. Wish it was in my childhood.

Sonic Drift 2 I had but not the first one. I even wanted to go on a quest to find the first one when I was younger, little did I know it wasn't ever released in America. When I finally played the first one I found it a bit dull compared to what I was used to, which was 2. This game made me think Nack and Fang were twins when I was younger. Confused the heck out of me. For some reason, the name Eggman didn't confuse me as I thought it was a weird nickname or something. Curse you localization and the non variety!

I actually enjoyed playing Tails Adventure. The rest were all pretty "meh".

I finally tried Tails Adventure after folks raving how great it was, and I find out that Tails is slow as molasses--even for the genre, and it uses a godawful password system instead of battery back-up(WTF?!)

I'm just had a hard time of enjoying that game and I usually like games similar to it.

Well, I love the Master System versions of Sonic 1, 2 and Chaos, and Triple Trouble and Drift 2 are fun.

Labyrinth is definitely the worst offender in Sonic history, let alone the 8bit titles.

I always had an affinity to the Game Gear games (if not, it's not that much). I still have yet to play all the titles, yet alone finish the ones I have, but most of them are great.

GT pretty much said everything I was going to say; including the games he did and didn't own. o.o But I would like to add that Sonic 2 was definetly my most favorite. Sure it was very difficult, but most Sonic games now aren't hard at all to beat. I praise it for its music, oddly fun levels (sides Mt. Gimmick), and gimmicks not seen in other Sonic games. My only beef, as already stated, is the first boss and Scrambled Egg Zone. Utterly difficulty to figure out, and a total pain to finish. I still enjoy the game, despite its weird quirks.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tails' Skypatrol. I'll bet the developers were bored programming the game.

While Sky Patrol was a very unforgiving game, I personally found it quite enjoyable, and it is one of my favorite side-scrolling aerial shooters.

The rotating yellow panels are more psychological than anything.

And why wouldn't you rather want to play the original Rail Canyon?

Tails Sky Patrol was impossible when I first played it, and I didn't touch it for many, many moons. However after a while I tried it again and got the hang of its gimmicks and actually advanced to later levels. I am fond of the game despite not being able to beat the last level without savestates.

I still don't like the negative feel of the thread starter's attitude. Don't say Sonic 2 sucked because you couldn't get past the first boss. How many times can you say a Sonic Boss kept your heart beating fast in pace to the music, especially in the final seconds to the point that you were relieved that you beat it? And the emeralds are not a chore to find. Aquire? That's a different story. But it is still doable if you know what to do. If you want hard, try getting all chaos emeralds as Sonic in Triple Trouble. I've done it, once and only then I got ac adapter glitched into the wall at the end of Atomic Destroyer Act 2. Tails on the other hand I've collected all emeralds and completed the game quite a few times thanks to his flying ability.

The emeralds in Sonic Heroes were more annoying to gather than the ones in Sonic 2 GG version. I've played all of them via... uh... >_>
Let's just leave it that I've played them. <_<
I loved them, except for Sonic Blast. 😛
And the Sonic 2 first boss wasn't that hard to me. Sure, it posed a challenge for the first few times, but I got the hang of it. o.o

Tails Skypatrol was THE definition of hard. Couldn't even get past the 1st level...bucause of CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP DEATH AFTER CHEAP BLOODY DEATH!

Let me guess, you only tried it once? Like I said before, I was like that once. First look at what everything does. There's a time to speed up and a time to slow down. Make sure you have enough space to get past a piece of jutted level land in your way. The yellow rotating panels can't hurt you when they are flat facing the screen (that's what always got me). Learn where candy is and checkpoint bells (likewise all items too). Candy fuels your flight meter so watch out when that goes down. Learn where the Star sphere poles, bars, and catapults take you. Most will fling you in the right direction but there are some that might send you backwards or in somecases a gigantic loop. These things are critical to get past some vertical chasms. Minecarts are helpful if you want to get through an area without depleting your flight meter, but watch out where they end up you may have to leave early.

Either way, everything works when it gets latched on by the ring you are holding. If you can't get past the first level, Activate the level select with ^+2 then Start. Give the game another chance.

In Sonic Labyrinth spindashing is the speed. They want you to bounce around like an uncontrolable idiot.

The little race car noise in Sonic Drift that occurs when you get the level's results... it frees me of all pain. <<
