We all know it.

The 4Kids dub of Sonic X was a disaster.

It's got bad points (a lot of them)

Let me ask you:

"What did you hate the most?"

Music change?
The puns?
Cream's voice which could level a mountain?

Please be open.

The part I hate most about it is the people who continue to whine and complain about it.

Meh, Griffith is slowly growing on me, the Tails voice is ten times better than the Heroes one was and they have Lisa "Lina Inverse" Ortiz as Amy.

Oh and Pollock is the best we're going to get for old Eggy now Deem has passed on.

That said, the voice acting was pretty annoying.

4Kids completely raped Gamma's voice.

I pretty much agree with everything Craig said. Besides Tails has to be voiced by a woman because its hard to find or train kids who can do this stuff. It's incredibly common and almost a rule of thumb that women play the voices of young boys.

But thats kind of the point I would like to make. When Sonic first opened his mouth in Sonic Adventure, I cringed. I always had the volume down when I played around others. But after hearing them all for a few years I got used to them. I have no idea where this bizzare hyper loyalty comes from when it comes to fans petitioning and writing letters to Sega to get back the original voices. They were not that good.

On voices, I say that some of the Adventure > Heroes voices were better than the 4 Kids guys and vice versa.

Some of the puns needed re-writing the best example is in the first episode where Sonic is standing on the S-Force car and says something like: "Kids if you are standing on a car make sure your trained." I'm pretty sure that's not what he said but it was something that was two sentences long but could have been summed up in "Kids, don't try this at home!"

Music: For Britain, we got a generic opening theme which was annoying considering "Gotta Go Faster" wasn't bad of an intro theme. Of course, the only other case I know of the music being changed was Live and Learn play at the end of the Adventure 2 story. Was it an orchestral/special version or just the normal one? If it was a special version then yes I can understand the disappointment otherwise - just go play Adventure 2 if you want to hear Live and Learn.

The funniest thing I find about the voices though was Gamma's voice actor (which was bad.) became Omega's voice actor in Shadow and it was good.

And, also to anyone who mentions Rouge's disappearing cleavage. Rouge's breasts are good, but not good enough to make enough of a difference to the Sonic X dub.

John picks out some good points. I personally like the majority of the regular voices. It's not that they are bad, it's that the lines needed to be made better. Like my previous topic of wondering if Cream was actually saying "Under my bed." :lol

Some of the characters were changed. Knuckles's original voice actor left for a myserious reason; and was then replaced in SA2. E-102's original voice was also different from Sonic Battle. The reason was the same as Eggman's was. And of course, there is Tails. I liked the original Tails's actor. The reason of his parting was also unknown. But when it was swithced to an 8 year-old kid in Heroes, many
fans dissagreed.

But let's remember the reason on why the 4Kids actors were used in the first place. Dear old Dr. Eggman's actor passing made SEGA have few options: Get a new actor, or replace everybody. With the 4Kids easily ready and available, they turned to them. What a rather obscure reason to relace everyone for it. (And were replaced with such bad ones too) Of course, if was more to it than that. Don't know all of the details.

I guess that a big point to all of this is that SEGA didn't even tell the original cast that they were replaced. Most of them found out as soon as Shadow the Hedgehog and Rush were out in stores.
But if I had to choose, I would rather have the regular SEGA ones than the crummy old 4Kids.

I must have missed that memo because I definitely don't think it was a disaster. I think it was pretty good actually. Other than changing the Shadow/Rouge episode with Molly, I don't have any complaints about the dub.

My only problem. My ONLY problem. Was Cream's voice. I had to literally turn down the volume for the sake of my ears if she were ever to shout. Any other complaints I may have had *coughChrisisaselfinsertcough* was with the anime itself. Not the dub necessarily.

But Creams's voice was terrible in Sonic Heroes too.

One Peice was far worse than Sonic X. Sonic X in honesty wasn't THAT great to begin with.

Anyhoo! Cream made me want to punch lil orpahns because that voice was just intolerable. And YugiKnux was just as lame.

I liked yugiknux because it made me laugh. But it would have been one hundred times better if the VA didn't use the exact same Yami-Yugi's voice from Yugi-oh. Or at least now Yami's constant shouting voice.

The awful music. I'd have put up with it if it wasn't for that one detail; the original music was rather good, actually, and somewhat memorable.

The worst thing about the 4Kids Sonic X dub is that it was one of 4Kids's better dubs. *Weeps over the butchering done to One Peice and Ojamajo Doremi.*

You are aware that Japanese originals aren't usually called "dubs", right?

...and that episodes 53-72 do not have Japanese versions?

Speaking of which, I'm suprised I didn't mention "Molly"'s death sequence. The dub version destroyed the entire meaning of that episode so badly I'm suprised they could air it.

You mean 4Kids taking out a death "for kids" would keep the episode from being aired? I don't think that's how television land works.

I know, but the entire point of that episode was so that Shadow would gain a new Maria to fuel his mission to stop Black Oak and the Metarix. Way it was, she just flies off and then Shadow becomes all TEH RAGE again.

It was "Kids, don't use Formula 1 racecars to chase hedgehogs!", and the original was "Kids, don't stand on moivng cars!", the former being the better joke.

Don't forget episode 46 when Cream kicked Emerl into the ocean. The oil coming from his eyes as he copied Cream's tears were edited as well. It ruined the whole moment, along with that horrid music.

I also don't see why Cheese or any other chao had to have dubbed voices. When 4Kids dubbed Pokemon, Pikachu's original voice was left intact, I believe.

From what I gather, 4kids seem to have stripped the entire audio and just started again. Possibly to save money and not have to pay anyone out of house for it.

I hate them so much for that.

I also hate that TV-Links registers Sonic X as a Cartoon rather than Anime and only have the dub >>;

Yes, how DARE 4Kids act like a business, and try to save money. :crazy

Animes and cartoons are the same thing.

Ticking off the anime fans that drive the business is no way to run a business. They only thought short-term, and look what it's gotten them. Unless you haven't been paying attention, they're not exactly in the best of financial situations.

2 things.

1. When I said "listed as cartoon rather than anime" I was referring to the website TV-Links which allows you to watch episodes of shows. The "Anime" link is for subtitled shows. They only list Sonic X under Cartoons, hence 4kids dub is the only option.

Please do not condescend me when I stated what I was talking about in my post.

As for running like a business.

Stripping something to it's bare bones to save money is a sucky marketting stratergy. It seems to have been successful in this case and therefore I don't care too much, but the fact they removed the soundtrack caused a total lack of Live & Learn in the SA2 plot, which totally and utterly drains the climax.

Music is, afterall, the most key element to a show or movie. Music has the power to guide our emotions, and when you hear badass awesome music while watching a badass awesome scene, the result is badass awesome.

Hearing generic music during badass scene makes it feel like a generic scene.

Same can be said of the landmark episodes, 26 and 52, the original songs placed in those and the slow motion and stuff made it seem very "end of chapter" and kind of emotional too, especially during Chris' screams in the white room. The generic music (and speed up animation) made it all seem run of the mill stuff going on.

The 4kids version of the show had no real sense or care for a narrative and treated it as random show of the week rather than a continuing story... and the fact that they managed that through sheer editting and music removal is astonishing.
