Is it true that American appliances don't work in Italy? :O
Most of Europe is 220 to 240 V ac 50Hz
Where as the US is approx 110 V ac 60Hz,
so American appliances will not work in most of Europe, usless they are compatible with the given ranges.
And what pray tell do you have use for an American appliance in Italy? Did you not see My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Wait long enough, and Hollywood will bring Italy to you like they did with Greece.
