I am writing to enquire as to what level of language is acceptable. Particularly in roleplays. I remember Samanfur got mad at me for using the word 'bastard' some time ago.

I've seen harsher language used these days XD

Long story short, what are the rules on language and swearing? The links on the rules of the RP guild are broken ;-;

i think general rule is that if it gets caught by the filter it isn't allowed

if that is so then just type what you like without attempting to censor and it'll be sorted out for you

As far as I'm aware, the only rules for language are the rules that apply to the entire board, though in actual practice the primary rules seem to be enforced as "don't fill posts with little else but swearing" and "don't dodge the censor."  Obviously I don't expect you to have any problem with either of those.  A person who starts any topic can technically set their own rules, which can include "no swearing" specifically, but that only applies to the topic they created and not elsewhere.

The rules link for the RP Guild I think had less to do with matters of language and more to do with the mechanics of RP, avoiding powerplaying, etc.  If anything they may have said something about keeping things to a PG-13 level, which is rather flexible.

Though I must ask, why did you post this here?  Nothing wrong with it, but this could have gone into the Unofficial RP Discussion thread.

If I think it's gonna get caught by the filter, I just turn it into asterisks to begin with.

Bad language? Me?

Of course not.

I'm a strictly family-friendly lemur.

No swearin' from me.

Other than that, i discourage swearing in general... no point in it.

which is fine if you know what the filter actually contains! but it's hardly great advice when someone is asking what the limits of said filter is

especially when we don't keep a public list of its content

because

you know

it would get filtered

swear words have just as much of a point as any other word in the english language

clearly language has no point

Wonderful. Clear as mud XD Oh don't you love the hootpie censor? What's that all about?

Oh oh, might I deserve the fate of this young man?

I perceived it as silly question and thus thought silly and spam went together ;P

As it is most of my RP characters are classy and well spoken. 'I shall killeth you!!!' Erm... well not that over the top. But yeah. Wanted to clarify for myself and others.

I like to think I have some form of articulate speech but the odd swear word adds some context of frustration which can be amusing.

Thanks guys!

That.

Listing the censor would be naughty and get censored.

In all honesty, I don't get the problem with swearing. Its just a simple word. There are other words that have the exact same meaning, and are sometimes funnier. Like Jiggly Wiggly! =D

I know right? Feces, poop, excrement, crap, s___... oops that last one is vulgar. Crap is also apparently considered 'harder' (it got me in trouble once in 4th grade.)

However, as much as I casually swear (as I'm sure you've all noticed by now) and hate when I gotta break my stride, I do appreciate the need for forbidden words to remain forbidden. Otherwise, they'd become meaningless. I mean, if I just yelled out the phrase  "_____________________________________" in a room and nobody even blinked, well, I'd be saddened.

And yeah, just go ahead and type, then hit the preview button. If it ain't allowed, it'll be censored. If not, then it's either allowed or you're totally on the cutting edge of swearing. It's not like the board has an auto-banner that kicks in when it detects foul language. If there was, I'd be totally f___ed by now.

My mum tells me off when I say "bloody"

I tend to self censor as well and go a bit overboard with it. For instance I didn't realise "crap" was an allowed word, I would have censored that O_O Not cause I think it's particularly harsh or anything, just that being brought up in an overly sensitive to swearing environment I'm super cautious.

When my parents aren't about I swear quite a lot Sometimes when my mum is about by accident too, then I get shouted at

I don't swear much at all personally...(occasionally say 'crap'...but in a hushed mumble XD I didn't even like saying 'suck' for the longest time XD; )

But when you ride the bus all the time, you HEAR it constantly. It gets rather disgusting, really XD; when I hear someone drop the f-bomb every third word, I'm like "Sheesh...language..." (but only under my breath XP ) Some bus drivers get people to stop, but most of them don't bother with it.

And it's like...these people are often doing this in FRONT OF THEIR KIDS. And then they wonder where their kids pick it up..

...Sorry. Rant over. XP

I have to hold myself back enormously around here, seeing as my family (and myself) use cluster f-bombs in polite family conversation.

You people and your damn taboo words.
