i always wondered what the "nik" in robotnik meant, and today while watching an old black and white tv show i came across the word "Beatnik" and i went to see the meaning for it and i found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-nik    (nik means: relating to the word before it)

i'm sooooooo smart

This was a mystery...why? They don't even use the name in the video games anymore.

Well, it's still his official name...

It's just that everyone (including he, himself) calls him by his nickname "Eggman".

i thought everyone wondered about the nik in robotnik.  it was soooooooo annoying hearing his name all the time and not getting why its like that. i mean  come on what bigger mystery in the sonic world is there?

.... and are you sure they dont use his name in the game. i could've sworn they called him robotnik not eggman.

They haven't called him Robotnik since Sonic Adventure.

They still occasionally refer to Robotnik in the manuals, but in the games themselves since SA they've referred to him in-game as Eggman.  Part of the reason for the split in the first place is that apparently in Japan when he was first introduced, Dr. Eggman WAS his real name, but in translation to the States it got changed to Doctor Robotnik (since "eggman" doesn't really sound that intimidating in itself, let's face it) since that sounded more menacing.  But around the time of Sonic Adventure they started referring to him as Dr. Eggman again, perhaps to bring closure to the inconsistency and unite the fanbase more firmly.

I may be wrong about certain details, but that's always been my understanding of the situation.

you're welcome supergirl.

btw you guys said that in sonic adventure he was called dr.robotnik right? now wasnt his grandfather also called robotnik.... what does the japanese dubbed intros call him in SA1 and SA2? if the japanese called him robotnik than its official since they made the game. even if it is an amercan version if they accepted it it should be considered as robotnik's real name.

He was only called Eggman in the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure. They could get away with Eggman calling himself Robotnik in the English dub, though, because he had no lips to sync. Gerald Robotnik was called as such in the Japanese version of SA2. That was the point where the Japanese designers decided to incorporate the American idea into canon, making Eggman officially "Dr. Ivo 'Eggman' Robotnik internationally. Or so I've heard.

Just troll information sites such as the home page here, Sonic Retro, Sonic Cult, and the GHZ to start with, and then follow their link pages to even more.  Just take care when you're traversing Sonic Cult.  There's a reason there's a warning right before the main page.
