Did you know that they switched Sailor Saturn and Pluto's names around because Saturn's more associated with death over in Japan?

I'm not very familiar with the Sailor Moon series but I recall coming across this episode through YTP... jeez, the guy in that group is made a doormat to a bunch of older girls who he apparently doesn't get to go out with... unless the bit at the end is supposed to have developed further or something, which I doubt... as if how scantily-clad the heroes were wasn't questionable enough. o.o

Swimsuit episodes are generally not the ones to judge the rest of the series by; they're usually more of a "special episode" sort of reward for fans, whether in terms of actual fan service or simply because it lets the characters have a day off from their regular adventures...or not.

I thought he was talking about their Sailor Scout outfits.

He didn't correct my obnoxious, half-serious, outburst concerning the mini-skirts after all.

unless they show their privates in public how can you possible call them skanky?
there's nothing wrong with miniskirts or bikinies your mom and sister can tell you that.... though they might slap you first.

Ah, Sailor Moon.

Being 12 when I originally watched it it had far more of an effect on me than it should have had.

... what kind of effect do you mean?

And Mada, I don't remember saying a thing about "bikinis" being skanky, I was just saying that very short skirts, of the variety the sailorscouts are portrayed as wearing, are mildly skanky.

Try to be more repressed, Matt.

By the by, the episode you judge the show on is entirely banned from all DVDs and re-runs, as the creator of the manga did not like it at all. But, again. Thanks for playing.

Sailor Moon was just Power Rangers for girls when Power Rangers was popular. Same show premise, same dynamics, same tedious "slice of real life" subplots and VERY SPECIAL EPISODES. Just, you know. It was anime and had mini-skirts, which made it better. It's a product of an era, and has been absoloutely and utterly NOT ALLOWED out of Eastern Asia for like 7 years now (ie: no DVD releases, published manga or TV broadcast. Italy are JUST getting a new one, but mostly it's Japan, China and Thailand who get lucky).

In closing: If you weren't there when it happened, you may never understand. I know many a girl who loved the show as it was the only place they could find strong heroic female rolemodels who embraced their gender identities and for guys well... It was a coming of age thing.

I never really got on the bandwagon myself, and stopped watching midway through R. But it's a show which deserves respect, attention and DVD releases in the USA with decent voice actresses. NOW.

People like Sailor Innuendo and Sailor Nudity have totally killed the Sailor meme with their Sailors who are essentially implicit endorsements of the attitude Matt said.  They're basically more subtle versions of Rishina.

To be fair, Vec, Sailor Nudity was one of the earlier results of the Sailor meme. I know that I saw Nudity around the forum a while before I created Sailor Unicron. There's a post of hers as early as February 2005 in MF Classics.

Besides, I can't recall anyone being offended by Innuendo and Nudity before now. Why the offense now?

I remember Sailor Uranus... which was just a bottomless, chibified, Sailor Moon sprite shown from the back. XD

I think a mod said something and she never appeared again, though.

They're not offensive, just kind of unentertaining and embarrassing. The meme started with sailors who were parodies of their posters' interests and personalities converted into elements of a sailor sentai squad. I'd like Sailorness to be amusing or participatory rather than, basically, reinforcing attitudes like those Matt said.

I'm overreacting to say it in such a vocal way to be honest.

Still leaves it ambiguous, though. Did it create some kind of fetish for these kinds of characters, or just involve sexual thoughts while watching the show, or something else? I'm just curious, that's all.

And okay, so the episode I saw was not a representative sample. I just figured I'd bring up my albeit-limited understanding of the show seeing as how we were already on the subject. o.o

>_< how can miniskirts be skanky?  and on teen girls too?!
they arent tight or revealing and they arent wearing them to seduce anyone, the show is innocent and the miniskirts are cute, they're like cheerleaders or tennis players so what's the big deal? we girls cant play sports without short skirts or short shorts and the such it doesnt matter if our briefs show we wear sports underwear you wont see anything. if in real life we wear them for sports isnt it sensible to picture us wearing mini skirts when fighting bad guys?

Methinks the lady doth protest too much, Mada. XP

I personally thought Vector's point earlier was valid, but since the Sailor trend on the board has always been more parody than 4 srs, the mentioned Sailor types could easily be parodies of the stereotypes some people have about Sailor stuff.

And that said, Sailor Modesty's original outfit was just the sailor suit with leggings.  By a stricter definition, skintight is just as revealing as bare skin, so take that as you will!

And as for Sailor Modesty...hope people have been keeping up with how
she's changed over the years, though she's still the Sailor Scout of
Heroism (which is different from being the Sailor Scout of Courage, mind
you).

'Sup.

EDIT: Here's a link to an even more recent pic of her.  http://lucidrant.deviantart.com/art/Request-Modesty-Hobbes-125291862

You sure you want to imply that you speak for an entire gender? I would think that what is more of an individual thing.

And shorts are a little different, they're not as... suggestive. It's hard to explain, really. Yeah, one shouldn't jump to conclusions about why people dress the way they do, but I'm trying to describe the attire from a more generic perspective, independent of whatever the reasons for wearing it are. It started out as more of a side-comment, really.

You wish to draw human characters in cruddy stick-figure style?  I could give you a tutorial on that sometime.  For a small fee, of course!

Really?  Let me amend my statement then.

Sage's l33t art skills make me so jealous.

Didn't she also have a Sailor alt?  I want to say she did, but I can't remember.

As for Tuxedo Mask, he was pretty tough in the manga, but in the anime he was little more than a love interest to the heroine.

Yes, that's right!  We need to change topics to something entirely non-controversial and non-inflammatory.  So I'll lead us off.

Best Sailor Scout ever!  Mercury, 'cause she's cute AND smart.  Topic over.

Also, is there a way to keep the theme from changing back to the default?

Hmm...do you have cookies enabled?  Not 100% sure what exactly might be going on,
but since cookies are used to store stuff like site preferences, I'm guessing the
problem with the theme switching back to default has something to do with those.

(Theme settings seem to stay put for me, at
least based on choosing a non-default theme, navigating out of SPA, then returning
to it to find that it remained at whatever theme I had selected before.)
