It's really stale. I never got it when it first started and now it's just becoming annoying - because EVERY poll has to involve soup and if it doesn't there's some bullcrap clause where the fourth option automatically becomes soup just so people can keep soup-pimping. I'm getting more than a bit tired of it all, honestly.

Of course you don't. I daresay no-one currently involved in it actually gets it. I'm sure I've explained the origin of soup before now, but I'm equally sure I'm the only one who remembers it.

It all started back before I joined the MoFo and spent most of my intertime on Neopets, where I was an active member of the forum community there. It was a very crude forum software and had no poll feature, but nevertheless polls were common practice and I, as any decent, upstanding Neopian, posted a few in my time. Of course, each and every one had precisely five options: yes, no, maybe, soup and none of the above (possibly all of the above, my memory's not that great). There was neither reason nor rhyme; these were the days when randomness was hailed as the greatest of virtues on the intertubes. Or at least on Neopets.

But I digress. When I first arrived at the MoFo, as I recall, polls were disabled and so the notion of soup languished, forgotten, in my mind. Many years later polls were re-enabled and, occasionally, I would vote the fourth option in nonsense polls (and include soup as the fourth option in my own), purely for nostalgic reasons. That was all soup was for a time, until quite recently - last year perhaps - when Wonderbat became the first person to join my on my doddering, soupy bandwagon. First he, then others. Soup had become a fad, though nowhere near as rampant a one as it is presently. Thus it was Wonderbat who gave me my first taste of what soup could be, the power soup could wield.

Alas, soup fell on hard times. Polls were once again disabled and Wonderbat, for entirely unrelated reasons, was banned. Soup was undone, vanquished, forgotten in the memories of all but me. I still maintained my nostalgic voting of the fourth option in those few polls that managed to make their way past the blockade, but soup was a shadow of its former self.

Then, from nowhere, a miracle happened. Polls we once more re-enabled. A flurry of polls, most of five options, meant a flurry of souping on my part. And this time, people noticed. People jumped on the soupwagon. Soup managed to take over the forums like so many other fads before it.

And that, my friends, is the secret origins of soup, shrouded in mystery until this day. It is, effectively, an in-joke between me and me alone. Everyone else who joined in the current wave is a poser. 😀
