Okay, so I'm playing Sonic Mega Collection, right, and I thought: "you know what game I haven't played in a while? SH!" So, I put SH in to my GC, using the same memory card. I'm searching for my game data-and it's gone!

I'm looking around for it frantically, skimming through all 99 game folders but I can't see MY data anywhere. I was pretty cheesed off coz this meant I could no longer listen to the music and I had managed to get all A's and B's on Egg Emperor for the teams.

So distressed, I decide to put SA2:B into my GC and once again find out that all data has gone. The only explanation I can find to this is that I used the same memory card for all three games instead of buying another one. So now, I have to start the games ALL OVER AGAIN. I just know I'm not going to get those scores a second time...

Has this ever happened to YOU?

Never use 3rd party memory cards, regardless of whether you are right now. NEVER.

...Yes, I have. As have many others. With 3rd party memory cards. =D

Are you joking? Third-party is the only way to go. I'm not dropping an extra $20 on a memory card just so I can have the same logo on it as the console, especially when they all use the exact same technology and manufacturing process. Almost all memory cards use Samsung chips. The fact is, they're prone to damage so the best you can do is keep the card away from the carpet and not feel too bad when you lose data.

Cyke's got a point the 1st party stuff is so overpriced. Anyway I have like 3 PS2 memory cards, two Gamecube, and 1 Dreamcast. Memory cards are a pain.

I remember when Gamepro released that DVD with the glitch that erased all the data in the memory card slot 1 on the PS 2. Good lord, I worked my BUTT off trying to restore my game files...by doing it all over.

Yeah, I'll agree with cyc, too.
4.95 is fine for me anyhow. But still, A's and B's...

I'm sorry, but I beg to differ. I have NO respect for non-official mem cards WHATSOEVER!

I am a games collector. Instead of selling a game when I complete it I keep it so I can re-visit it years later. This of course leads to lots of saves, which in turn leads to me needing lots of mem cards.

I have about 15 PS1 memory cards, 3 of them official, the rest not, and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE UNOFICIAL ONES HAS AT SOME POINT DE-FORMATTED, MAKING ME LOSE ALL MY SAVES!

None of the official ones however, have ever given me a problem at all!!!

At that point I decided never to buy a memory card that wasn't official, so when PS2 came out I made sure all of my now 5 memory cards were Sony's own, and I am SO glad I did! Virtually ALL of my friends who have bought unoficial cards have in the past complained about them wiping or glitching, but I have never experienced a problem with any of mine!

True, official ones cost more, but they are far far far more reliable than 3rd party ones!

Mmmmm, you make a good counter argument, but a thirteen year old like me gets that kind of money rarely, and when I do, I need it for a loved-one's birthday present or something.

I don't see the point in spending a considerable amount more on a storage device when all I'll be storing on it is game data. If it's accounting data or school work or projects, then yes, I don't mind dropping a few extra bones, but frankly, games are not nearly as important.

Memory cards are expensive enough as it is, so I buy the cheapest one I can find and take really good care of it. I've only had one memory card failure and it only had a few incomplete saves on it. Most memory card failures occur because they're always lying around on static-filled carpets or stuck in powered-off consoles. When you're done playing, put the memory card in a case and store it on a shelf or in a box where it won't get stepped on.

lol well that's where we differ Cycle. I view my game saves as important, so it's a big deal to me if one goes missing. But if you don't mind losing some unlocks or cheats every now and then then yeah there's no reason why not to save some money.

I agree with the taking care of cards bit. I try to do that whenever possible.

And yeah, I remember when I was 13 and had no money...dang it was annoying lol. All I could recomment with that is maybe to put aside a couple of pounds(/dollars) each week until you have enough.

Or (dare I say it!) suck up to your parents for a bit until they get you one. LOL

Better yet, fit your parents' computer with a really nice videocard and never have to worry about crappy, overpriced memory cards ever again.

Most of my mem cards are third party, I keep them in the systems/controlllers, AND THEY WORK FINE. Hell, I have very little data losage, and a lot of data one them. Never suffered any losage *Excluding the routine 'dumbass brother saved over my motherf**king 80% file' deal* and I can't really sense much difference.
They're basically the same thing, but I guess brand name ones can take more of a beating. But I don't wear my memory card as a brass knuckle, so it's cool.

Never had memory card problems and I don't care whether I buy first party or third party, they all work the same...only issue I had was when my brother lost my memory card with a save of Star Ocean 3 on it..and that game is far, far too painful to go through again to finish it...(I was like 40 hours into it)

I had nothing but bad experiences with third party stuff, memory cards or otherwise, my Brother bought 2 GC third party memory cards which repeatedly currupted (and yes, we made sure they were kept safe) and every third party pad my Brother has ever bought, which is a total of about 10 or 11, wore out wiithin a few months or even weeks. Personally, while I think official is far too expensive, it all works out cheaper as I don't have to repeatedly bye them ever 2 months, most official stuff I've bought tended to last about 2 years or over.

But this is actually the first problem I've had with third party mem cards.
Where do you get YOURS from?

I've had nyko Memory Cards for just under the length of time I've had my Gamecube, and not a single thing has corrupted yet. They were cheaper, too; I bought the most expensive one (not the brightest move, I'll admit, but still), and it still had tons more space than the similarly-priced official one.

Well my mad catz memory card supposidly needed re formatting, but when I hit reset it didn't aand I had GHZ on SA2B with only 163 emblems. I think that 3rd party ones are better anyway because they don't cost much at all.

People like you make want to hang myself.
I know it's not a word, dude, it just follows my trend of adding -age to a lot of words for some reason.
People like you remind me of Hallowed be thy Name(In the sence that it is about hanging. Good tune, man.).

Are you kidding, third-party sucks. My friend had a third-party memory card for his Gamecube, and it would constantly need to be formated, he then bought a first-party memory card, no troubles sence. First party is the way to go, sence 99% of the time, third-party hardware like controllers and memory cards suck.

Uh, me? I exchanged my GBA and all the games for my copy of Half-Life 2. I don't see the point in keeping old games I'm unlikely to play again. I only keep certain games around that are likely to turn up in a tournament or something, like StarCraft or Counter-Strike 1.6. Otherwise, if I feel a hankering to revisit something, I rent or pirate it.

Hmmmm, well I usually keep all my games and play them again all the time.
I was just surprised because for 40 for a game- I BETTER keep it and remember the glory.

I always use first party. Whether controllers (curse my broken Mad Catz controller), or memory cards, I just don't like buying third party stuff. If theres a chance something will happen to my data, I'd rather spend a few extra bucks on a first party, than spend another 50 Hours of my life on an RPG that had its data erased. (Like when my sister deleted my mostly done Skies of Arcadia Legends file). Its not like it adds a monstrous amount, I routinely clean my memory cards of files no longer needed, so its rare I need extra memory cards.

What does your sister have to do with the company that made the memory card?

Nothing. It has to do with the fact that its extremely annoying and tedious to have to replay a mostly done RPG, and thus why I will spend the extra few dollars on a first party memory card to make sure I don't have to do something like that again.

My Dreamcast has one standard official memory card and two JoyTech 4Mb ones - I've had one of them for over 3 years, and nothing's happened to it yet; the second one was given to me by a friend (along with Skies of Arcadia, that was nice of him) and mostly contains backups of the most important stuff on the other two cards. So it's very unlikely that they'd both fail at once.

My PS2 memory card is official (and, yes, overpriced - it was more expensive than any of the games I've bought for the system so far), but the only PS1 card I could find was a third-party GAME-branded one. I only got it for Metal Gear Solid and Special Missions anyway.

I would rather buy an official memory card because, as said before, they are more reliable and most often have more storage space, I find.
Memory cards are going out the window though, aren't they, since Xbox360 and Playstation 3 are going to have built in memory?

One: I have a nyko memory card that stores TWICE the largest Nintendo memory card, and it was selling at the same price as said official card. It hasn't failed me yet.

Two: They're called "hard drives", not "built-in memory". Seriously...

(looks at the tales of memory card loss)

This is why Microsoft made a good move when giving the Xbox a built-in hard drive; no need to buy memory cards (I actually bought one when I bought the Xbox, and I have not even taken it out of its box).

The amount of space on the Xbox is really impressive considering I have about nine game files on the machine, with all of them holding multipile game saves, player profiles, custom gametypes, and downloaded content.

Built in memory, hard-drive, same thing. You knew what I was talking about.:)
The space amount on Xbox really IS amazing because, like Ultra Sonic 007, I've got all kinds of game saves and have hardly used any memory!

I've lost SO much data from memory cards I've had to keep all my games to get the data back.
Luckily I have yet to lose my Final Fantasy 7 save. Which is a good thing. A very goodn thing.:lol

If I recall, the Xbox's hdd is only about 6 gigs... Which is pretty damned small. Large enough for saves and levels and whatnot, though, I suppose.

The Xbox's Hard Drive holds 8 Gigabytes.

The hard drive for the Xbox 360 will hold 20 gigabytes.

If you don't like losing data on your memory cards you could just bye an xbox like me and you won't have to worry about losing anything. I'me pretty sure you could get the same games for the xbox.

Uh, no you can't; all three systems have very unique game selections. Besides, not everybody here has $150-200 to spare like you seem to think we do.

And stop bumping old topics. It's rather annoying.

While it's up, I have some woes about my memory cards on my Dreamy. With only one, I couldn't save all the hot Chao action from SA2 on a card which already had the SA chao file on it. So I would leave my Dreamy on for dyas on end, not wanting to lose who I'd made already. Which is how I fried my Dreamy. And stuff.

I wanna nother one. ;_;
