So yeah, I'm looking for a decent free Ad-Blocker from the net, one that is safe, effective and reliable, and won't conflict with antivirus programs or spyware scans. Does anyone have any suggestions of blockers that would fit into all these categories, perchance?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Good point, I should mention that it's for IE, not teh Fox. Thanks for the suggestion though. Any more ideas?

If you add plugins to Firefox and they hose it, you reinstall Firefox.

If you add plugins to IE and they hose it, you reinstall your OS.

Messing with the interworkings of IE is quick way to get your computer formatted.

Only advice I have was already given. Use Firefox.

It's not that simple I'm afraid...I could use Firefox myself (although I really wouldn't want to, personally I hate it), but we aren't just talking about myself, I'm asking for my dad's compy as well. And my dad, who isn't as computer literate as myself, wouldn't be prepared to switch to and learn a completely different web browser, it'd be too irritating for him.

you don't have to set it as the main browser, or make him use firefox.
i've installed firefox on my mum's laptop, but kept all the icons and etc hidden away so that she can continue to use I.E, but i can use firefox whenever i have to use it. ^^

but each to their own preferances!

Yeah, we actually have two different compies, he has his and I have one of my own. It's ad blocking for both that we need, and he's looking for blocking on his too. I'm retrying the Fox on mine, and while I still prefare IE interface etc I will say I'm impressed with Fox's ad blocking power...I dunno wether I'll stick with it or not yet...but he'll still need an option for his computer too.

At any rate, I've convinced him to at least try Firefox and see how it goes, he may like it, idk. Either way, other options for IE would still be very welcome if anyone has them, so our options can be kept open.

Are you familiar with firefox? If you know enough about the settings - and a few extensions that allow you to further tweak the settings - you can make it behave exactly like IE does. There's even an IE6 and an IE7 theme.

Barring that, there aren't many good ones that work like Adblock Plus does, for free - and none I've tried on IE ever worked as reliably. But for popup blockers, Google or Yahoo toolbar does that, I think.

There are some, but none of the ones that work at all are free.

I guess Zone Alarm has a free ad blocker.

My dad actually has the Google toolbar, but that's done absolutely squat to block anything...I always thought toolbars like that resulted in more adverts rather than less due to spyware and the like. Could be wrong tho.

Anyways, my dad has been giving FF a try and now he's getting used to it he seems to be liking it, so fortunately it seems his problem has been solved. I guess I'll probably stick with FF too, even though I don't like it as much as IE...maybe I'm just lazy and it's the path of least resistance, but I will admit it IS effective, so maybe it's worth putting up with a few irritations for.

Thanks for the suggestions all, I'll wait and see, but my problem may be solved as well as my dad's.

What don't you like about Firefox? While it's topic we might be able to help you.

If it's the whole tabbed browser thing - I didn't like it at first, but after a month or two, I started getting really annoyed at having to switch windows to find different sites when on IE-using computers. You may just need to get used to it more.

If not, there are ways to make it behave almost exactly like IE.

You can download an add-on that loads IE within Firefox. Though really, Firefox is nicer, what with being able to customize without making Windows vomit. Best part is very few sites absolutely require IE to work properly now... except of course Windows Update. XD

lol people on other sites have been asking me what I dislike about FF too :p Allow me to copy my post from one of those sites, since I can't be bothered typing it all out again:

Quote:

It's lots of little things that all come together to make me dissatisfied with the program as a whole. It's slower than IE in loading pages and images; it's appearence is rather dull and uninspiring, too 'square', if you like; it's functionallity isn't as smooth as IE, like when you're opening two seperate windows from the bookmarks option and you click the mouse wheel to tab one, it jums straight to the tab and page rather than allowing you to select the second page for the main window, or the fact that you can't arrange bookmark folders to your own personal preference, only by alphabet or other means.

And the most annoying thing I find is the font size...when typing out a post for a message board, like I am now, the font size is way too large, but when I adjust it, it adjust font size for every page I view online, making it too small to read. I either have to have readable writing on web pages and huge text in the post box, or normal text in the post box and tiny writing on pages, there's no inbetween option or seperate choice for each mode.

Those are my main bones of contention...there are one or two smaller ones too but those are the major ones that really irk me. Any suggestions on dealing with any of them?

On speed, you can look over the help files at Mozilla that can tell you how to tune up its performance.

You can change the theme by downloading one at en-US.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/customize/. The best one IMO is "Blue Ice". You can also get bookmark and other addons to make other features bow to your will.

Font size, it's Firefox being more standards compliant. You can change font sizes on the fly by holding Ctrl, and pressing +, - or 0. The + makes font bigger, - makes it smaller and 0 sets it back to default.
