Apparently this new "proposed handheld" incorporates elements from both the Wii and DS (dual screen and motion-sensing). So far, it's a patent, so this could be something that they're tossing up as of right now. It's possible this wouldn't be used for another few years, maybe. Discuss.
Since the DS is already killing the PSP I don't see why they wouldn't wait 2-3 years.
I was actually thinking if nintendo would try using the motion sensing on a handheld, but thinking about it, it would be really hard to focus on the screen while doing some type of motion with it.
Hmmm...kinda like that Kirby game for GBA. The cartridge was sensitive to tilts, etc. Ninty needs to chill out though...they've already made a killing on the handheld market, who are they competiting against now? Themselves? =P
Seeing as how this was filed in March, if Nintendo wanted to use this anytime soon, they probably would have shown something at E3, so i don't think think we'll be seeing it anytime soon.
im kind of :/ about this..
i kinda like a game that i can just sit and play without having to wave my arms about. but, ive hardly played with a wii, so i dont have a good impression of it yet i s'pose.
but i think this wont come out for a while either.
..it better not, im not even caught up with this generation of consoles yet..a gamecube is the newest i have ><
C'mon, Ninty, Microsoft and Sony have you beat in one aspect.
There will ALWAYS be gamers who jsut want to sit down, kick back, and game. Not sport, not dance around, just lay back and play. I know for a fact I enjoy my PS3 a lot just lying on my back in my bed, and if I were playing a Wii game, I'd have to be up, and more alert, and while that isn't really a BAD thing per se - there are times when I don't just want to sit down and manipulate a controller - forcing people into just that for all of your products is going to enjoy a success, but eventually lose support with the heart of the market - The gamers, not the so-called "touch generation" or the old people that appreciate playing simple, interactive games in nursing homes, not the soccer moms who want something to do when they aren't cleaning, but the gamers who made the industry a six-billion-dollar industry.
Is there a niche for the others? Definately. Is there a niche for more active gaming? I think the Wii's sales speak for itself. Are people still gonna want to sit down, relax, and just play? Bet your ass.

Exactly. There's a reason I have a recliner in front of the TV my consoles are connected to.
A new handheld? Oh, come on, I just got the DS a few days ago.
With this patent they could also just make a motion sensing cart that plugs into the gba port on the ds, and with wifi enable it to connect to wii for more madness
I don't think that motion sensing on a handheld is very good, unless it's a subtle move or something. But even then, my hands shake when I hold stuff, and I move the console just when playing, so I don't really like it. And they better release it 3+ years from now, the DS still has lots of life in it.
Hopefully they won't rush foreword too much. Nintendo is good at trying new things though.
Oh, it's not the console/handheld ITSELF that's moving. Hm.
I never thought it'd be the console/handheld moving when I read this new but somehow actions performed by the player would be registered on the handheld as motions.
Yeah, I don't know how the hell I thought of that. >>
...why does this suddenly scream "COMPUTER MOUSE BUT NINTENDO" to me?
umm...because that's basically what it is?
Oh!
I don't believe the world needs a new Nintendo handheld yet. I believe they are in good hands with the DS right now.
...Its the super Nintendo mouse all over again. doesn't Nintendo also have a patent on eye motion technology?
IGN did an article a while back on the possibilities of "what the revolution's controller does" and touched upon it the patent.
I would hope Nintendo doesn't have a patent on eye motion technology, the Army and the Air Force both use that. o.o
I read an article in IGN once about a cellphone with built-in Yoshi game by Nintendo, which would automatically pause the game when there was an incoming call; but nothing came out of it in the end.
What I want to say is that not all patents end up with a product being sold, some are just ideas that sound promising may be used in future, which they patent to prevent others from stealing them beforehand.
not really the same tech, had to do with camera movement i think.
As far as i remember from History channel's Mail Call, the air force version is a headset that displays two different things, like night vision and the other a radar of sorts. The apache helicopter pilots had to be able to look at two different things at once. its been so long since i saw that show though, i could be wrong.
