Going through a bit of childhood nostalgia here (Or sadism, whichever you prefer :P), but I found myself replaying these old games and remembering why I never finished them as kids. Seriously, who the hell had the bright idea to make one of the most painfully challenging games ever to have the appearance of being kid-friendly? Trust me, its not, at least when it comes to difficulty.

Still, found these two games fun (Never played the DC Ecco game) despite the massive difficulty level they have. I don't think I've played any harder genesis games ever. Seriously, the sadistic mind you'd have to have to come up with these games in mind-boggling and a bit scary. But genius at the same token as well.

Anyone else remember these two gems?

I had the Game Gear version of Ecco 2. I was sad that the genesis version didn't have those frusrating block puzzles.

I've played Ecco: Tides Of Time on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Fun game! <3 Haven't played 1 and 2 though. Someday, maybe.

Ecco 2 = Tides of Time

Same thing lulz

I heard the GG game was a REALLY bad port of Ecco 2, so its probably not the same fun (But sadistic!) game I just finished playing.

Did you ever beat it?

Hell no! From the vague memories I have of that game, I got as far as some stage where a whale appears, gives me some advice and then swims away.

Edited to add: I just remembered that I have a ROM of Tides Of Time. Sweet!

I played both on an emulator once, though I never owned them as a kid. The opening area is fantastic and It's so much fun swimming around but then I get to a level and I just have to put it down. >=

I think the whale level is the one where he bashes the wall so you can proceed, right? That's while you're recollecting the asterites globes I think....

Also, TTG, couldn't get past the first level? lol
Well, the game IS sadistically difficult. Just don't play "Welcome to the Machine" level on the first game...... >_>

I also know everyone in the Ecco fandom bashes Ecco 2 for game gear. A lot who never even played the game or played the genesis version first.

Well, I was playing it on an emulator. I find that I tend to give up and move to something else much easier if I'm not using a physical game.

Ecco: Defender of the Future on Dreamcast/PS2 is an excellent game as well. Probably SEGA's best port to 3D. The difficulty level is still there, although it felt a bit easier compared to the originals. Shame there wont be a sequel anytime soon, but Jaws Unleashed is by the same people, so maybe it will be worth checking out.

Also once you get to the Hanging Waters level you will be glad you played it. That level is the single most frustrating level in the game, you will die a lot, and the level takes forever, but it is worth it.

the dreamcast eccho was easy and very fun. it had so much nice ideas and graphics, they mastered it quite well in my opinion.

as for the old ones, i played them recently too on the xbox, in the genesis collection game. your right they are hard, i couldnt' pass those crazy spike packed caves. i don't think i'd play them again but i'd really like to play the dreamcast version again.

I still can't guess how the bleep you are supposed to beat the final boss without cheating. Ecco 1 was the hardest game I've ever played.

I played 1 and 2. But the only Ecco game I beat was Defender of the Future lol.

And then only with a strategy guide. I was ready to take an axe to my controller on Hanging Waters.

But to it's credit DotF was an incredibly beautiful game for the Dreamcast. With a great ambient soundtrack. If they remade that (with liberal changes to the controls. Camera could be a bastard in that game) It would be almost creepy how realistic the underwater effects could get with this current technology. I know people who have a phobia of large bodies of water. Said they couldn't do anything with this game. I probably have a fear of underwater nasties that can drag you under and swallow you whole. So when I got to the first "boss" The Great White. I was freaking out. But that was nothing compared to the Giant Eel that comes out of a near invisible whole in the wall of a dark underwater cave and eats you if you happen to swim too close to it.

And to make it even more frustrating you had to catch one specific fish in that level that swam almost DIRECTLY in the path of the freakin Giant Eel!

And then there was like...a gigantic prehistoric Crocodile but he was easy to kill at least.

But Hanging Waters...Oh God Hanging Waters....It's almost instant death every time you miss one jump.

Of course the fear of drowning.Period. The earlier levels are nice because at least you can surface for air. And sometimes you'd get air power ups. But later on you'd end up in like under water cities or caves where you'd go longer than comfortable without resurfacing. I think if nothing else I've probably got a phobia of drowning because I obsessively surfaced for air even when I was in no danger of drowning.

EDIT: Hah and I didn't even read Spite's post. Yeah it's probably unanimous amoung people who have played DotF how evil Hanging Waters is. But it is quite pretty. Like I said this would be like....wow. If remade. Visuals alone.

I just posted about this series in the 'reviving classics' thread without noticing it was here as well. I think I have the second one, but I'm not sure. As I said in the other thread, I want to dig it out again and try to complete it at some point. When I last played I got all the way to that whale level that someone mentioned earlier on, but I couldn't find the exit to that level anywhere!!!

And about Hanging Waters - personally I found Medusa's Tube a whole lot harder. Hanging waters you could take your time on, but with a giant floating jellyfish grabbing you the moment you get close and throwing you off the bottom of the level, it's considerably more difficult to go slow and time your jumps.

I had the Dreamcast Ecco game and I never got farther than the part where you beat the shark because I couldn't figure out what to do
