Lately I've been going on YouTube and rediscovering some awesome tracks from video-games I haven't played in years, and it's very satisfying to hear them again. It also reminded me how music in games is also awesome. So, does anyone know some games with awesome music? I'll list some favorites of mine:
1. Street Fighter Alpha 3 - One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. I don't think any other SF game even compares, in terms of music (maybe except for the rest of the Alpha series or SF2.)
2. Virtua Fighter 2 - The series had awesome music, up until 4 (IMO). However, I think this game takes the cake for being the best in the series.
3. Super Smash Bros. Melee - Need I say more?
4. LoZ: Ocarina of Time - Music that I've pretty much had stuck in my head forever.
There are many more for me to name, but these are the ones that truly stand out. What about you guys? Which games had awesome music?
There's all sorts of great tracks from various video games that I could list, but one of the best songs I've heard recently is the one in the No More Heroes trailer.

Pure win.
Armored Core 3, Armored Core 3: Silent Line, Halo, and Halo 2 are my favorite video game soundtracks. Absolutely love that stuff. Can't wait to hear what's in Halo 3.
I know that the Ys series is well regarded for its awesome soundtracks. I also enjoyed the music from Ar Tonelico and the Tales series as well.
Of course, I'm a VG music junkie, so I could go on and on.
Crush 40
The 1997 Mech shooter G-NOME by 7th Level had a really neat soundtrack. Ace combat Zero was also excellent. And of course any Guilty Gear has an awesome soundtrack.
All the Ace Combat series have amazing soundtracks.
ANYTHING by Shoji Meguro, which includes;
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (Lucifers Call in PAL)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha Vs The Soulless Army
Trauma Center: Under The Knife
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
And almost any other recent Atlus title. The man certainly knows how to do a battle theme.
Basically the clich ones like the Zelda overworld theme, the Tetris song, and Mario are the only ones I really know.
Although the guy who did the music for Chrono Trigger is pretty good, I guess. Some Japanese guy.
I think Sparkster (Rocket Knight Adventures 2) still has the best music out of any game I've played. Other games which I've really enjoyed the music include Quackshot, Sonic 2, the smash bros. series, Mario Kart 64 and Advance Wars.

Yasunori "zomg" Mitsuda, ignorant knave. But I'll forgive you just this once, because you sex me up.

So I noticed you neglected to mention the Persona series. Hmm, yes. Quite.
FFVIII. Yes, heavily cliche game, but I enjoyed a lot of the music in the game. And nearly the whole Sonic series.
Sonic series' BGMs usually fit the level well, but not many of them are that enjoyable outside of the game.
Their latest theme music all sucks. This excludes Senoue's instrumental His World mix.
Also has anyone ever seen the translated (from Russian) Tetris Song lyrics? They're very...interesting. Something about valiant hands in the shower.
No, but I have read the lyrics to the Mario theme. There's a vid on YouTube with some japanese singer singing actual lyrics to the song while it was being played by some orchestra. I'm not sure those were the real lyrics, but they were lyrics nonetheless, talking about beating turtles and jumping.
Can you really count Super Smash Brothers? Not ragging on the music, it's great. I'm just saying it's really a compilation of the music of 12 games.
But yeah, Chrono Trigger needs to be mentioned in any conversation about VG music.
Why has Jet Set/Grind Radio not been mentioned? People! Get on the ball. Who are you?! What's yar nayme?! SUPAHBRUDDAH!!!
Lyrical genius!

You may find my lack of Persona disturbing, but I find the lack of local release even more disturbing. >>
Oh, how I wish I could accept that. So I will!
It took this long for a mention of music from the Katamari Damacy games?! SHAME!
Also need to give it up for Ko Otani for the awesome Shadow of the Colossus OST.
Ah, Shadow of the Colossus! Amazing game, amazing soundtrack. And really underrated too, which kind of sucks.
In what Bizarro dimension is SotC underrated?
Uh, our bizarro dimension. It's not that well-known of a game.
I kinda liked some of the music from the Dynasty Warriors series.
I see the only Yuzo Koshiro game mentioned would be Ys... but hey, don't forget any Streets of Rage (particularly 2), ActRaiser, Portrait of Ruin... among many, many others. Guy's a flippin' genius.
Also Daytona USA. Anyone who says otherwise can go fryyyyyyyy sky hiiiiiiiiigh. Heck, let's goooooooo toooogethaaaaar. Yes, Daaaeeeeytooooooonaaaaaa; let's go away! All we need is a rooooooooolliiiiiiiiiiing staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart...
You know, I was watching a vid of Fighters' Megamix on YouTube, which featured Hornet in it at his stage. It brought back good memories of my Sega Saturn days. =D
I remember a chunk of meat as a playable character.
Game was nuts.
Yeah, Mr. Meat. He was a Sanman clone though. There was also the AM2 Palm Tree. It was awesome.
I put the Metroid series as my next favorite.
Was that the game Pepsiman was in
Only in the Japanese version. Removed from western releases, much to my dismay.
EDIT: I'm an idiot. I was thinking of the Japanese version of Fighting Vipers. That's where Pepsiman was a secret character.
Phoenix Wright...:P
{ Only Because Sonic's already been mentioned, lol. }

Many people have made their own renditions of the songs on Youtube. Many of which are from the Genesis era.

My favorite soundtracks come from: Streets of Rage series, Megaman/X/Legends, Rocket Knight Adventures, Daytona USA (Dreamcast version), Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, Chrono Trigger. Awesome music all round.
