I've narrowed it down to 5.
they are ...
Sonic - Sega
Megaman - Capcom
Metroid - Nintendo
The legend of zelda - Nintendo
Final Fantasy - Square ... Enix.
give your possiable rating out of 10.
this is for fun just to see what you think.
Sheez. You forgot some OTHER series.
Metal Gear Solid.
Timesplitters.
007.
Command and Conquer.
Battlefield.
MoH.
Hell too many to list.
Dude, shouldn't this go in...
I don't know...
The forum we have that is devoted specifically to video games?
Just a thought, as you seem to be pretty bad at putting things in their proper places.

Sticking with the limit of those five, I'd say Zelda. Otherwise I'd be flailing excitedly waving an Armored Core case around.
Of those Metroid, but my fav is Gran Turismo series. Maybe MechWarriior before the GT games.
Scores and reasons (never actually played all of a series except Sonic)
Sonic Series - 7 (really been brutalised recently)
Megaman - 2 (Never played one of them. apart from at a friends house. wasnt that good. Then he bitched at me for saying it was like a crap Metroid.)
Metroid - 9 (Only played Prime1,2 and Fusion but they hella good)
Zelda - 8 (Only completed Wind Waker, Played Ocarina of Time, Twillight Princess looks the buiseness)
Final Fantasty - 2 (only played 10 and I hated it. Dont you dare say play FF7 because i'll hurt you)
Anyways, what do we do now?
My favourite series (at the moment) is Namco's Soul Calibur, such a great series that would be easy to perfect but silly flaws get in the way of said perfection.
I second Zero's vote, for Armored Core. Although, mine definetly goes towards Virtual-On. Only if it is because of one game(out of the 4 in the series). VOOT is my favorite game of all time. I'll probably come back and add my scores later.

I think the fact that you didn't list Mario along with certain other games in a "Best Game Series Ever" list automatically makes your list invalid. =)
jak...
Apart from HALO it's the best original series since the PS2 came onto the scene.
Halo
Mega Man
Resident Evil
Sonic
MGS
And yeah Jak
If I had to vote for ONE...it's Zelda all the way.
~T2K
I second (or third or fourth...) Zelda...the games never dissapoint- Score:10.
(If you were to ask me four years ago, I would have said..Pokemon ...retro score: 9...Today's Score:6... No big inovations...)
-Super Smash Bros...can you name a game that delivers a better multiplayer experience (don't answer this question!)...Score:9
-Mario...just stamp this five letter word on a video game and it will sell like hot cakes...Score: 8
-Halo...(one of these things is not like the other.. ) This game has single handedly destroyed my GPA...so addicting...I'm actually going through withdrawl right now (only one month and nine days till Halo/School is back...) Score:8

err, never? depending on your preference, I suppose... *glares at Wind Waker*
The Triforce scavenger hunt was lame and it was a bit on the easy side but the art direction and the ending was awesome.
Still, Zelda series in general still seems to be one of the few franchises from my childhood that doesn't offend me with some choice bad games(I'm looking at you Mario, Sonic, and Final Fantasy). =P
I have yet to play a Metroid game even though I played Castlevania:SOTN, and I feel a bit uncultured someway.
As for Megaman...eh...played the games long time ago and lost interest.
the ending was awesome.
*blink*
Spoilers (Select To Read): We are talking about "I wish for hope!" ending? The biggest cop-out I've ever seen in... ever? Dear GED that ending made me cry tears of disappointment, the only good bit was Ganondorf getting a labotamy. Of course that's my opinion, but ARGH. I hate RPG endings as a rule and that one raised the bar on suckiness
as for my favourite series? Couldn't say, every series has a few skellies in the closet, Sonic has just about everything in the past 5 years, Mario has the stupid games which have no right existing, Metal Gear has anything which isn't MGS1 or 3, Resident Evil has 0...
The point is that no series is going to be instantly great, even the best game will have a dud in there and one dud can tarnish a perfect series.
I suppose Tetris and Pac-Man rock no matter which title it is though, Super Tetris Advance COLOUR for the win!
Well, anybody who knows me close enough or whose read enough of my posts knows that I would say Sonic but of course that's the admitted bias of a hardcore Sonic fan. I also have to agree that there's something wrong with a "best video game series" poll without Mario. I mean c'mon when asking a question like that I think 4 series should be put up automatically: Sonic, MegaMan, Zelda, and Mario.
*agrees with Craig's spoilers, for the most part*
It's been a little while since I've played it, but I distinctly remember being quite disappointed with the ending, especially since I'd heard many people talk about how great it was. as for the art style, eep. o_o that's one of my primary complaints about the game. >_<
What actuall happened was good, but they should of left it. The bit after that where the survivors are just standing around, talking and hoping for good things in the future is horrible, but the actual scenes before, around and immediately after the final boss I found brilliant.

Don't worry, you'll get your realistic, "LOTR me-too" style LoZ with Twilight Princess. Sorry, but while TP does look nice, it seems less unique and unexciting art direction-wise compared to WW and the upcoming Okami.
"LOTR me-too"? Wasn't Zelda using that style long before those movies came out? Anyway, I personally can't stand the art style and character design of just about everything in that game (with the possible exception of Ganondorf), but I guess it's good that they aren't sticking to one style permenantly, since there seem to be many fans of both. I'm just glad they are making TP in the more realistic style, since I was getting worried for a while that we'd never get one like that on the GC.
I should also note that I don't just immediately dismiss TWW because of the look the way some do, as there are other things I dislike about it as well. Although it may have helped, having my preferred graphic style wouldn't instantly make me love the game. Which isn't to say I completely hate the game either. It doesn't come close to other games in the Zelda series for me, but it's still decent, and worth the $20 I paid for it at least. I can think of many other games that I dislike more than TWW. (some of which would probably incite a mob, hee hee)
Anyway, I seems to be dragging this way off-topic... >_>
*darts off*
If we have to name a best game series:
Baldur's Gate for the pc.
The sort of quality of writing computer games generally don't have.
Best Game Series Ever.
Dungeons & Dragons.
Your role playing games wouldn't even be fun without it.

Who are you quoting? Which Zelda are you talking about? Only the "lobotomy" description sounds familiar.
Spoilers (Select To Read): King of Hyrule randomly deciding that he doesn't want to save the world from water, but instead give "hope" to the kids, which is the stupidest wish I've ever seen. The only plus point is that Ganon gets a sword through his head in the final battle, which is possibly my favourite final boss fight of all time
Shining
Phantasy Star
Half-Life
Unreal
Quake
Doom
Elderscrolls
Deus Ex
Shenmue
Do I need to continue? The original list posted was pretty biased. It didn't seem to be based on actual sales figures, and poll of any sort, but rather on the original posters ideas, likes and dislikes. That kind doesn't make it the best games series ever.
Now, if the title was "Out of these, which is the best series?" it would be more valid, and I would vote Sonic, if only because I have played the whole series through, where as the others I have missed quite a few of the series.

Actually...
(Puts on ubergeek hat)
One could call the gamebook, also, very much intertwined with roleplay. And while a lot of people don't know this, the gamebook actually predates the pen-and-paper RPG.
In 1956, a book called State of Emergency was published, calling itself a "reach yourself political experience", or something, but effectively a gamebook.
I own a copy. No-one else I've ever talked to has even heard of it.
